The Sony 14mm F1.8 GM is impressively small and sharp. We used it for astrophotography and tested it side-by-side with astrophotographer Vladimir Kabanov's Sigma 14mm F1.8 Art. But don't worry, we shot the new Sony around the streets of Calgary to test sunstars, bokeh, and more.
Check out more of Vladimir's work:

I tried this lens last night with milky way in New Zealand. @ f/1.8 , the coma at the corner of the image is still there. So according to Chris, it is true that it is not Zero-Coma but it might be very minimal compared to sigma ( I ve never used Sigma though).

Excellent! Great to see some astro work included in lens testing as stars are the most demanding subjects and show up aberrations easily. But putting the camera on a tracker is the best way to test as any star trailing can mimic lens aberrations and can often be worse at the corners of a frame, just as off-axis aberrations would. I’ve just been testing the IRIX 15mm vs Rokinon 14mmSP vs Sigma 14mm Art vs Venus Optics 15mm. Would have loved to have included the Sony G-Master! Clear skies!

Very nice review. My favourite 14mm for Astro is the Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4 (EF with FE-Adapter). Also a bit on the heavy side, but optically better than the Sigma. Not often sold, so I think it will take some time before we see a comparison with the Sony here on YT.

Not sure how I missed this video. Nice work! Interesting to see your positive results at 1.8 for Astro. Several complaints or rather mixed reviews on BH Photo about coma issues. I’ve been reluctant to pull the trigger because of it. One thing that never gets mentioned is indoor video. This lens is probably spectacular for that. Specifically I’m thinking of glamour type videos. General use might run into distortion challenges but the amount of light this lens absorbs wide open would result in much lower iso.

Thinking about Astro, with IBIS and digital image stabilizing and high pixel counts (A7Riv), if you add an external thingy with GPS through the smart hot shoe mount and some specialized programming it should be possible to take very long exposures, fully compensated for earth rotation. I guess that comes next year? ;-)

I said something similar in the comments to the Undone one's video, but a year ago I would've been all over this lens, after shooting with the sigma 14-24 f/2.8 and Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Heliar (those sunstars are to die for...) I have really come to the conclusion that 14 is, by and large, just too wide for every day use for me. I generally find myself using the 24-70 /f2.8 Art or 24 GM a lot more often, so I don't think I'll be picking this lens up, as impressive as it looks. Mad props to people that shoot ultra-wide, there's definitely an art all its own to it.

Hello Vladimir. Hope you are well. What are your thoughts on adding a tracking mount to facilitate longer exposures of the night sky with lower ISO, composited with static ground image.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! I absolutely think that tracking is a useful tool for landscape astro, especially when shooting over 24mm focal lens. With that said, I was stunned to see how well you can stack static shots (no tracker) even at 70mm focal length on A7RIV, so its not that tracker is an absolute necessity to shoot this kind of astrophotography. For me personally, if I had all the money in the world I'd be buying a tracker myself, but for now I am completely happy with results I can get (in terms of balancing star trailing and noise) with just a good serdy tripod :) One thing to keep in mind is that, even with a tracker, the camera sensor will not like very long exposures (say over 1 minute). You will start seeing hot pixels everywhere, and weird artifacts around the frame edge. So even with a tracker, my understanding is that folks shoot a series of shorter exposures (say 30 seconds) and then again stack those together. In this sense, a tracker is an added step into the workflow. I hope this helps!

For infinity use like astro, don't forget to focus away from the center, at aps-c corners or even more away. You will get higher overall sharpness bur center will be slightly softer (it's too sharp anyway if you focus center and corners look bad in that case). My copy is centered perfectly but it has aome field curvature behaviour. Do some trial and error to find the sweet spots. 14mm takes patience to use anyway.
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 3 жыл бұрын
You’re not throwing away megapixels when cropping unless you plan to print really large. The only reason for cameras to have as many megapixels is to crop or to print large. Other wise they could have much larger photosites that would considerably improve dynamic range and high ISO performance.

wow, I didn't see Sony coming out with a 14mm f1.8! As a Sigma 14mm f1.8 owner, which I primarily got for nightscape use, the size & weight saving of the GM is very impressive while retaining or even bettering the performance of the Sigma. The vignetting worries me a little though, I've used a Zeiss 21 f2.8 Distagon on the night sky before & the vignetting is so strong on that lens that I'm better off shooting with a Canon 24TSEii f3.5 most of the time.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 жыл бұрын
The vignetting is what really stood out as a negative for me as well with the Sony. It makes sense really, I mean, something had to be sacrificed to get the size this small! But I totally also agree, I hate to admit that I would often leave my Sigma at home when going on a hike just due to size and weight.
@TheLDunn1
@TheLDunn1 3 жыл бұрын
@@vladimirkabanov617 I think the corners of the Zeiss 21 Distagon were more like f4 or even f5.6 & it was only the very centre that was f2.8. For nightsky work, I found it almost unusable. Judging from your images, the GM14 doesn't look quite as bad as that though, where you able to correct in post adequately to dial the vignetting out?
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheLDunn1 Makes sense. Ive played around with corrections in lightroom, just qualitatively corners looked like they needed at least 1-1.5 stop correction to start looking like Sigma (both wide open). So quite a bit of extra noise there if you want to even out the exposure. For many shots its not a big deal, and with my edits I often add a vignette anyways. But its of course much better to start with an even file and drop the shadows where you want them.

Slowly lenses are becoming irrelevant as mirrorless is moving toward in-camera corrections. Instead of correcting the flaws in optical path, it is being handled in the camera.

The Laowa 7.5mm f2.0 is one fun super tiny wide angle. There's many others too. Surely the light gathering is different in m43 and full frame, but it's a good one.

Well, they are slowing down on the m43 so mostly the lenses are these. The good news is that people are now ditching their m43 in favor of aps-c and ff (to some degree), so there's gonna more gear on sale once this Corona uncertainty fades away. I'm sure the 14mm f2.5 comes around eventually.

Sorry, nearly all astro-shots shown in the dpreview-gallery are really bad (startrails as mentioned in the video, coma). Don't get me wrong, they are good - but not better than a Sigma 14mm. Are these really samples of the Sony 14mm?!?! And yes, I am aware, that this is a 60MP sensor. Pictures from my Sigma 14mm and an EOS 6D show exactly the same or less coma (for sure: pictures resized to the same dimensions). Am I missunderstanding something? Are there some Sigma 14mm shots in the dpreview-gallery? Every picture there says "Sony FE 14mm F1.8 GM". Thank you!

Hi Christian, I can totally see where you are coming from, I think its important to note that from the start (arguably) both of these lenses are the best we currently have for a 14mm focal length across all systems. Furthermore, both lenses can be totally used for the application of landscape astrophotography to yield fantastic results. And lastly, neither of the lenses is still totally perfect. I would be happy to share a couple of stacked tiffs for your own direct comparison of Sony vs Sigma with you. You can reach me via email or instagram.

Bottom line from my experience with both lenses - both can be used to capture great lanscape astro images. While Sony is an excellent lens, the vignette is really noticable. I'd say they about equal each other - issue with Sigma's coma wide open vs issue with Sony's vignette wide open.

why stop at 15 second exposures? with a 14mm lens you could shoot nearly 30 second exposures without star trails lol thats a big difference in exposure time

When using very high resolution cameras like the a7R IV, the motion of the stars will be more evident. The 500 rule really isn't applicable to modern sensors.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Mire!! Check some articles about "NPF Rule" - it is a way more precise method of getting max exposure for sharp stars which takes into account the pixel pitch of the sensor (i.e. the distance between each photosite in the sensor). 500 rule is purely imperical from the days of yesteryear and really becomes unusable on modern high resolution sensors.
