If you want a super wide lens with a similar max aperture, but that also takes front screw-on filters, then I recommend the Laowa 15mm f2. I've had it a few months and have shot both astro time-lapses, but also gimbal video shots with a variable ND filter attached. It's a fully manual lens, but at super wide focal lengths you can get away with focusing at near infinity and everything from 1m away is in focus. It does have some coma issues towards the edges, so it's not perfect, but it's acceptable. The new Sony looks amazing, but the lack of ability to take front filters limits its use for me to astro or time-lapse work only, or perhaps some video when ND is not required. Love your time-lapses by the way, really nice!

Any lens below f/2.0 is a great choice no matter what the focal length. The Canon R has a great built in time lapse feature that I constantly use. I'm still learning on filming timelapse but I try...my filming knowledge has increased tremendously since I discovered it. Try sunrises or sunsets...those are great!

I normally use Sony 20 1.8 for the Milky Way. One problem is that it is not wide enough for timelapse. This vid makes me consider getting Sony 14 1.8. Great vid.

I’d love to get it as I mainly shoot timelapses, but I’ve already got the 12-24f2.8gm & when combined with the s3 is unbeatable for 4k timelapses. I also have the Haida rear mount filter set 3,4,6 & 10 stops & they work really well, highly recommended.😀👍🥰

Matt, thanks for the good review. Appreciate the fine work. I bought the lens , love it for gimbal work, but I still have not found a good rear lens neutral density filter option for shooting video at the proper shutter speed. Have you by now found something you like? Old style Kodak gel filters perhaps ?

I have the 20mm 1.8, but I'm thinking I'll swap it for the 14mm. 20 just isn't a whole lot wider than 24, although for daytime video, being able to us a regular ND filter is a plus. Still, I think I'd mostly use this lens for photography and not video.

Great work Matt! I preorder this lens for Milky Way time lapses. But I will also do some daytime work. You said there was almost no flaring. Was the sunset time lapse over the ocean with the 14mm? The flare seemed strong there.

That was from a few years back shot with my sigma 24mm. The timelapses I filmed with the 14mm are labeled in the video :)

@@whoismatt Thx for the quick answer. I have the FE 20mm f1.8 G and it's a beauty! It performs close to the 24mm f1.4 GM level (minus the bit lower aperture) I'm still in time to return it and go for the 14mm f1.8.. but the distortion is what i'm looking to find how it compares.. everything else seems just as amazing as the 20mm.

Hey Matt, love your channel thanks for all the great info!! Question, would you recommend buying the Sony prime lenses or going with the Irix cine lenses? I do a lot of travel cinematography for client work and trying to step up my production level. Currently shoot on Sony FX3, 28-135 Sony cine lens, Sony 24mm 1.4 and vintage Nikon 50mm 1.8! Looking to add a few lenses to my kit! Thank you!

i just bought this lens sony 14mm. I noticed a sound when you press shutter button i hear mechanical "chik" of closing aperture sound in lense while focusing. Is it normal?

I wish sigma redesign they 14mm 1.8 for sony mirrorless for a long time. Finally my waiting is over sony release they 14mm 1.8 GM. My dream come true. Great lens for astro timelapse. Thank for great review.

I would use the built in Timelapse intervalometer to take raw photos. One photo every 2 seconds.

Any chance you could tell me if you feel something shifting inside of your lens when rotating it in your hand while off of the camera?

Yup that’s the glass elements inside the lens. They’re controlled by magnets when the lens is powered. Nothing to worry about if you feel them shifting when the lens is disconnected.

I reversed the timelapse becuase the clip wasn't long enough. :) Or maybe it's aliens

How easy was this to focus on the stars using the manual focus ring?

Very easy. Rotate the ring then punch in to check focus to make sure the stars look good. Took me a few seconds to get it dialed in
