I used the Sony a6700 and their 200-600 Telephoto lens for bird photography in Dayton Tennessee. First I went to the wetlands there, later I went to a park. I was happy to make some photos of Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, and a Kingfisher! I also found time to experiment with some intentional camera movement of ICM photography. I hope you enjoy this morning of photography.

Robins will literally eat anything in your yard. Sort like squirrels although certainly not any worms for those 4 legged guys. I like the beauty of the Kingfisher and the composition of the Crow. Didn't know until now about which was male or female Kingfishers. Since we are literally a few hundred miles apart, I am kind of shocked you don't see far more Blue jays and Bluebirds. I see them locally almost daily. Most youtubers do gear reviews for Numbers, so it's great there is still others like you that actually go out and just shoot nature, daily, weekly, and monthly. We need more channels like yours.

Hey Phil, watching from Australia! I don't mind seeing American Robin photos, us birders are same here and we like to ignore some of the common species or species that are easy to photograph and so many of us just chase the less common birds. Photographing common birds can really open up creativity because it needs to be a special shot to stand out from the crowd, also like you said someone in a different state or country might really appreciate seeing that species and will admire the birds beauty with any subjective opinions.

Really like this style of video Phil, and I like You and your Photography, despite the use of Sony! 😯🙄 Just giving you the bizness! Nice Job Phil. What do You use when shooting from the vehicle? My cheapie approach is to take like a piece of foam pipe insulation, and cut a slit in it, and then place it on the window. Works so so. Take care stay safe Happy Shooting with that junky Sony stuff! 😯 🤣👍🤝✌

@@PhilThach Morning Phil. Yes, ‘pool noodles,’ Pipe insulation tubes, that is what I’m talking about. Cheap and easy, but not saying it is the best. They make these small clamp on window units that have the 3/8 thread for cameras, etc. Take it easy!

I forgot to mention Phil: I’m not a huge fan of the ICM stuff myself, not that there is anything wrong with it. I like both, but I find the one where there is more ‘showing’ through the reeds, is my pick. I think it was the second one? Anyways, stay safe!

So technically speaking that 600mm focal length is equal to 900mm FF equivalent (600mm x 1.5 CROP)
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Ай бұрын
Correct. It will have the same field of view as a 900mm lens would on a full frame camera. But, it is still a 600 mm lens.

Lovely video and photos Phil 🙂. Do you prefer the Sony A6700 with the 200-600 lens or the Canon R7 and the 200-800 F9 Canon lens for bird photography? Its great to see North American birds that I can dream about finding here in Ireland which happens every autumn. I'm sure that you would enjoy seeing the European birds too.
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 2 ай бұрын
I would love to photograph some European birds! Thank you! I definitely like the a6700 with 200-600 over the R7 with 200-800. If it’s the R7 with the 100-500, the choice is much less clear.
@stephenbolger5925

@@PhilThach I highly recommend Spain in early May as an excellent introduction to European birds with some migration and breeding birds in full song and many varied habitats. It's a top drawer location to see your first European Roller or Golden Oriole. I am strongly considering getting the Sony A6700 and the 200-600 as for the money it's a really good set up for bird photography. The 100-500 F7.1 Canon lens is over 1500 euros more expensive than then 200-600 Sony lens and the 200-800 Canon F9 lens cannot be got in any shop in Ireland or the UK currently.

Crows and cars are an odd thing. They seem to think that as long as a car isn't coming straight at them, it's no threat. I have a family of crows that we give scraps to occasionally, and who are often mooching around in the yard, and when I come home and pull into the driveway, they absolutely ignore me. They may be only 10 or 15 feet away but take no notice at all. But as soon as I get out of the car, they flee.

Hi Phil Love your content covering my favorite subject - small wild birds. Just wondering of all the cameras and lens combinations that you have used, which one do you find is the most consistent in its AutoFocus ability? I am currently the Canon R5 with the rf 100-500mm and rf 200-800mm. Looking forward to the R5 Mark II, and if that fails with its AF i thinking of switching to Nikon or Sony. Btw, is the American Robin a Thrush ? In any case, I love its morning call
@Kellysher
@Kellysher 2 ай бұрын
Phil is the expert on gear. But I shoot the R5 100-500. Sometimes AF issues are settings. It took me a while to configure cases and buttons to my liking. I have 3 back buttons set for AF. One is for animal eye detection, the next small spot, the last preset as an emergency button for action. Works pretty well. Yep, the Robin is a thrush. They are common in OH, but their songs are nice and they’re fun to shoot!
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! I think the a6700 is the most consistent of my APS-C cameras for perched birds but I have better luck on birds in flight with my R7. My full-frame R6 Mark II is my best bird focus camera. I hope the R5 Mark II is as good or better. I do plan on buying that camera. I'm underwhelmed with the 200-800 but I love the 100-500. I believe the American Robin is a member of the Thrush family.
@i.norman
@i.norman 2 ай бұрын
@@PhilThach Thanks for the reply ! I'm working to find ways of optimize the Af using either 200-800 and 100-500. I like the reach of the 800, but the 500 is easier to use - light and I usually get quicker focus. Maybe, I'll get the 1.4 Extender. I suppose it doesn't help that the birds I'm after are always in semi-thick brush - chaotic branches everywhere and the poor AF doesn't have a clue !! Cheers

Just to clarify, when you say "321mm" or "600mm", you're referring to the lens zoom, and not the effective (with 1.5x crop) field of view, right? I'm saving for a a6700, not necessarily for birding, and I'm watching every video I can find on lenses used on the Sony APS-C E mounts.
