the 50 is great when your subject isnt moving at all. autofocus is just way too slow and you end up missing moments because of it. had to get rid of mine because of this but i guess expected on its age and price.

in photo AF test footage, the 35mm looks instant while you can see the 50mm gradually tune into focus, i.e. the 50mm is much slower

There are many 3rd party options as well. Samyang 45/18, 35/1.8, 35/2.8, Sigma 35/2, 45/2.8... But my favorite small prime in the normal range is still the Sony 40/2.5G.

Shoot the subject at the same exact distance used for the 50mm, and your subject's proportions will appear exactly same as that acheived with the 50mm, albeit a bit smaller in size. Crop into the image during post, and the framing will be the same. Oh drats, I lost some resoliution. As long as your camera is a modern high resolution full-frame camera, who cares. This loss of a little resolution only means you will have faster file transfers. So be happy about it. As long as your final cropped image size is at least 8MP, you will not have issues. Oh drats, what about my bokeh? My creamy dreamy bokeh? Forget bokeh at the time of capture. Rework the background in post, and adjust the blur to your heart's content. Do you want the blur to look like you shot the photo with a 1000mm lens? No problem. Therefore, feel free to get rid of your 50mm, get a fast 35mm, and turn your 35 into a 50, a 70, and an 85 in post production with cropping. There is only one situation that could throw a monkey wrench into your blissful life with just a 35mm lens. And that one situation would be if you had a client who absolutely loves to admire her 4 foot x 6 foot portrait from a distance of one foot away. So if you happen to have this type of client, she may actually be able to notice that there is a slight loss of detail in her huge portrait. If you do not have this type of client, then you can enjoy life with your incredibly flexible 35mm lens..... and not have any other lenses at all.

Great video buddy, I actually own the 35mm and the 85mm, and I was always wondering if I should have gotten the 50mm, due to the price. I realise now that going with the 35mm, was a good decision. Still thinking 🤔 if I should go next for the sigma 20mm f2, or the Sony 20mm 1.8 😅🤣 Great review!👊💪😊
@slashedbeauty7 ай бұрын
Would it be redundant to own both at 1.8? I also have a 24-70 2.8 but sometimes a prime is just more convenient. Just not sure if having both is creating too much redundancy in my kit though most of my stuff is beauty/portrait, products and then fashion/lifestyle. No landscapes etc.

Then, 85 f1.8 would be better if you do portraits. And its cheaper than 35mm

I think that he is a little bit biased towards the nifty fifty. To give photo AF to both is a bit strange seeing how slow the 50 is at night. Also the sharpness of the 50 drops kind of massive to its corners which should get mentioned. It is a cool option on a budget though. Coolest thing being the price and its light weight.

50mm pros- cheaper, slights shorter, good for portraits 50mm cons- auto focus is slight bad, focus motor makes loud noise. . 35mm pros- good is almost all aspects 35 mm cons- $400+ more than 50mm

I have the sigma 24-70 2.8 very happy with it. Is getting a 50 1.8 worth it?
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I find a 50mm is super handy for portraits if you want a super thick defocused background to make them pop from the surroundings. Also, shooting at f/1.8 will help you to keep the ISO down in low light condition as there's a big jump between f/2.8 and f/1.8 in terms of light entering your camera. I hope this helps!

If I buy a 16-35, do I still need a 35 or is the 35 in the 16-35 the same?
@pranayacreative6 ай бұрын
Main thing is the aperture, 35 f1.8 will be faster than 16-35 f4 or f2.8 . And prime lens are lilttle bit sharper too.

G Master or bust. Never worth investing in cheap lenses. If that's your plan you are in the wrong profession or hobby. I had the 35 1.8 and it was okay but I would never use it for any professional work. Sony's G Master lenses are a bargain compared to Canon RF. So they are a no brainer.
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your view. Respectfully, I disagree though. I built a successful photography business that now employs 5 people and between us we own 1 GM lens. Quality is important, of course, but blindly buying GM lenses isn't at all necessary to be successful. There are plenty of cheaper lenses that are good enough (some even on par with GM glass) to allow you to capture brilliant images and make a living.
@NickDelDuca2 жыл бұрын
@@TomCalton Totally accept your disagreement. And what you are saying is totally reasonable. My opinion is looking at things that way is why there is a lot of sub par "professional" photography out there. Compared to most start up businesses starting a photography business is relatively cheap. No reason to buy "good enough" when it's a professional investment. And if you are chasing quality and striving to get the best results it's cheaper to get the top of the line glass in the first place. I've wasted thousands on budget or 3rd party lenses that always had some type of sub par performance or negative aspect that I eventually caused me to buy the more expensive lens anyways.

@@NickDelDuca that maybe is correct if it comes to Photography but for me as a filmmaker its a different situation. Today many people consume media on their Smartphones and you must have eagle eyes to tell any difference. Also im Film gear does NOT matter 😉

Do you mind not showing, close to pornography videos. Women you put out there with hardly with no clothes. They are someone's daughter, wife or a mother. Please have some respect for women. Without them you wont be doing this video. Stick with modesty. You reviewing a lense not a flesh or body of a woman.
@kevenspargo6829 Жыл бұрын
Respectfully, I submit that respecting women is not related to the amount of clothing they are wearing. Similarly, being attracted to a person or showing them as attractive does not preclude showing them respect.

Am I in the twilight zone and living back in the 17th century? Are you a photographer, or are you the porn police? Apparently you are unaware that today's very modern and super innocent children who managed to escape abortion somehow, are occupying themselves with carnal knowledge in the back of school buses every single day. Kids are getting pregnant at 10 and 11 years old by their classmates. That's what's going on in our wonderful modern day society. So I surely do not think what Tom showed in this video would be shocking and horrifying to anyone, including a 10 year old. And since I shoot for Playboy and Penthouse and Victoria's Secret, I take offense to your remarks.
