How do you compare the Autofocus speed and accuracy between 50mm f2.5 and 55 f1.8
@phandango3 жыл бұрын
This is the exact comparison I've been looking for. Great job.

I have tested both in the Sony store. The CA and the extremely slower auto focus speed for the added range and bokeh on the zony wasn't enough to dissuade me from buying the sel50f25g. Weather sealing, lighter and more compact, blazing fast AF, and a competitively sharp lens with characteristics of a gm lens were better buying points. Well worth the value for the price range.

I'd love to see images from these two lenses side by side, as well as the colours... As for me, I think the 2.5 will make it easier to carry around all the time with my a7 iii... It's not that much of a difference in weight and size, but maybe that is all I need!

If AF/MF is not a need, which one would be your pick, Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, G 50mm f/2.5 or Loxia 50mm /2?

I've heard that the 55 1.8 is amazing, but after shooting with the RX1s it's getting difficult to live without an aperture ring :(
@Ryansayer2 жыл бұрын
I don’t quite understand. You said the old 1.8 is sharper, but doesn’t have the resolving power for the new r series cameras, which is why Sony came out with the new primes? But you are saying this new prime is less sharp than old 1.8.

I love your channel and how long you've been giving such quality, detailed reviews! Do you know if the record button on the a7C can be programmed as a custom function button in stills mode?
@LMOF013 жыл бұрын
The Movie button on the top of the camera can be reassigned to become a Custom button when shooting stills. The shutter release can start and stop movie recording if this enabled in the menus if the Shoot Mode dial is turned to Movies.

Great point about the 55mm not having an aperture ring. This is sort of an issue for A7c shooters who don’t have the extra front dial.

I'm kinda sad that you didn't review the difference in autofocus speed and accuracy between these lenses. Given that the 55mm Zeiss has the reputation of being one of the sharpest lenses for Sony systems, it also has the reputation of not really having aged well in terms of communicating with the autofocus mechanics newer Sony systems provide. I feel like I might just go for the Sony 50mm f2.5 because it's quite sharp, handles distortion, chromatic aberration and flaring quite well and has a (probably) way better autofocus than the 55mm Zeiss.
@ARlELATOM2 жыл бұрын
I have the 55mm and the autofocus is very acceptable. It is fast and quick. I’ve never heard anyone complain about it’s AF.

The 55mm Zeiss on the A9ii blew me away when i fist tride it, it's stunning (recently used it as my travel choice touring Switzerland ).

The 55mm made in Thailand. The "made in" info is on the rear of the lens above the camera contacts.

I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that the 55/1.8 cannot resolve the 61MP sensor of A7R4-5. I have this lens in use along with 50/1.2GM and I am positive that except wide open you can only tell the difference by spotting CA in certain lighting conditions. Before I picked the 55/1.8, I was considering the 50/2.5G, but then I dropped the idea not because of the slower speed, but the sharpness advantage from f2.5-f11 was just way too favourable for the 55/1.8. It may also something to do with the Sonnar lens design that really gives the shots some extra both for 55/1.8 as well as for the Loxia 85/2.4 that also has a Sonnar design. Both resolves the 61MP resolution with no issues.

I’m selling my ‘Zony’ 55 1.8 for the 50 2.5. The close focus distance of the 55 is annoying.. 2.5 focuses 7” closer. Per Lenstip the 2.5 is sharper across the board on FF. The older AF of the 55 is not super reliable with grabbing eyes in my use and I have updated my A7iv firmware. I also get more loCA than I am OK with from the 55 Zony. The 55 1.8, for me, is effectively an older 55 2.5. I’ve taken some wide open shots that are just gone due to loCA unless I want to spend time in dedicated software. The 55 1.8 is a great lens but I think the 50 2.5 is as good or better. FWIW, for landscape my Micro-NIKKOR 55 2.8 is giving me as good of results adapted on the A7iv.
@Evgeniy_Shaman Жыл бұрын
So eye autofocus on your a7 iv works not properly with 55 1.8?
@TCinSoCal Жыл бұрын
@@Evgeniy_Shaman the MFD or the 55 1.8 is 50cm. The MFD of the 50 2.5 is 35cm. The 55 1.8 has much worse loCA. The newer lens has better AF. It’s not that it isn’t working improperly. It isn’t as good in those areas and I think Lenstip has found the 50 2.5 sharper as well.
@Evgeniy_Shaman Жыл бұрын
@@TCinSoCal thank you, i still deciding which to buy, my preferred aperture 2-2.2 on 50mm for photo and video, and better AF (with my a7iv) will be better of course )) so i am confused

@@Evgeniy_Shaman if you don’t NEED the 1.8 I highly recommend the 50 2.5.

@@Evgeniy_Shaman If it doesn't have to be precisely 50mm maybe give the Sigma 65mm f/2 a look. I used it on L-mount (S5) and the results were really nice. Still normal-ish focal length and, well f/2. Otherwise, I agree with TC, these tiny Sony primes are bonkers. I have the 24 and the 40 and they are ridiculously sharp even wide open. Direct comparison between the 40mm and the Sigma 45mm: The Sony wide open is as sharp as the Sigma at f/5. On the other hand the Sigma is a bit nicer, less harsh and a tad warmer in color. Man, there is so much glass to choose from these days.... xD
@kinmeng2113 жыл бұрын
so which one is better?
@BigSlimyBlob3 жыл бұрын
They're different. The 55mm is sharper and faster, but has fewer features, is bulkier (though still relatively small and light), is more expensive, and apparently has no weather sealing. If I had to own only one lens and it had to be one of those two, I would pick the 55mm. But as I own a giant super sharp lens already, what I need is a travel lens, so I'd rather buy the 50mm G (or the 40mm G).
@bioliv13 жыл бұрын
Minimum focus distance for the Sony 50 mm is 20 cm shorter than for the Zeiss 55 mm , making it a better choice for "macro". I'll pick the Sony for this reason, and too it's better for chromatic aberrations. The 40 mm is sharper too, but not as good at chromatic aberrations. So the Sony 50 mm f2.5 is likely to become my new travel lens, as it overall is more flexible.

50g is sharper than 55f18za. The only thing better of 55mm is maximum aperture
@BigSlimyBlob3 жыл бұрын
@@hyunjunseo8541 The 50mm G is pretty sharp but it can't possibly be sharper than the 55mm Sonnar, can it? The 55mm Sonnar is renowned for how sharp it is, it's on the same level as GM-quality lenses, while the 50mm is only a G-quality lens.
@bioliv13 жыл бұрын
@@hyunjunseo8541 Good to know! I wonder if I should make this my only travel lens? 24-105 is good too, but you are so discrete with this 50 mm, I just have to learn to adapt to a 50 mm only. But as many famous photographers only use a 50 mm, why couldn't I for holidays?
@arnaudbau67937 ай бұрын
Euh sorry but if there is 2 points where the 2.5g won is build quality and sharpness. After that agree the Zeiss still really makes sense.
