Hello today I discuss the 70-200 GM Mk 2 lens and my thoughts and opinions on it. This lens does alot of things great but there's one reason it's hard to tell you to buy this lens, and this reason makes me feel guilty using it, it feels like a cheat code. Watch my video to find out what it is! Thank you for watching and supporting and any feedback is always welcomed.

Just got mine last night and excited to see how it goes. I get what you’re saying about feeling bad. I was going back and forth on this lens vs getting the f4 AND 50 1.4. Mind you I have historically against getting gmasters. In this case I traded in my dads old Nikon gear and after selling a few things i don’t use, I spent a total of $180 to come home with this monster. One of the last camera convos I had with my dad was him “scolding” me that I need the trifecta of zooms. I had the 24-105 that I wanted to upgrade so I got the 24-70, and now with his gear I have the 70-200. I don’t feel bad in this case but I also hate telling people these gmaster zooms are as expensive as they are. It just feels elitist lol. But the first time I took pics of my daughter, it just popped way better and in many ways looked like my primes. My advice is to wait until you can afford what you want, sell old/no longer used items to put towards the next. If I was a pro, I get it, but as a prosumer, I’m never going to just pay full price just because!

I've been thinking about this lens for a while. The desire to buy it at some point has been there for a long time and it would complete my collection. But at the moment I don't really feel ready for it. I agree with you when you say a lens is an investment. I've invested a lot in the last few years (a7IV, 24 1.4GM,35 1.4M,50 1.4GM, 85 1.8) and plan to invest more money in travel than in gear. But at some point this lens will round out the collection.

a7iv has been such a work horse for me, all those lenses you listed are beasts! you can always rent it out before buying to see how you feel about it, I know there’s people that have bought it and sell it mainly because they didn’t use it enough, even though I use it SO MUCH!

@@officalmattknows My focus in photography is on travel and less on work (occasionally a wedding). The fact is that you get unique pictures that are extremely different from others. Unfortunately, you also carry the weight with you. In London, for example, I was only with the 35mm 1.4 GM and didn't miss anything.

Hello Matt, Did you also consider Sony 70-200 FE 4 mark 2 version? Considering it has macro capabilities as well. If yes, what was the reason not to go with it?
@officalmattknows
@officalmattknows 3 ай бұрын
mainly I needed a lens that could be an event lens and portrait lens for me so 2.8 would give me more bokeh, other than the macro capabilities I still feel the tamron g2 has more value for the price, Sony Mk 2 f4 is pricey for what you get out of it

that’s awesome! & if you don’t want to spend the extra money for the GM, i’d recommend just going with the G2 70-180 from what i’ve seen it looks like a fantastic lens for the price, if you have spending room go for the GM!

It's a very special lens. I've actually given myself a mandate of only purchasing Red G glass going forward. My favourite lens to date is the 14mm GM, and that does most of the work on my channel. I've come to love the color and contrast it has, how it handles night work, and I expect no less in any category of the GMii telephoto. Things get sold for what they are worth. The price for the GM ii is set by its abilities and reliability, I think.

I agree with everything you said! truly you get some rich colors and contrast in GM lenses, and i’ve been trying to get my hands on a 14mm to rent looks like a great lens for wide angle, after buying cheaper options and now having the opportunity to buy the best I can, i’ll always choose GM (doesn’t mean 3rd party or G lenses aren’t good)

Biggest competitor for this lense is the Sigma 70-200, but you are still giving up alot for the Sigma, like the minimum focus range, ergonomics of the design, weight etc. But it's alot cheaper, so you are 100% right, if budget is an issue then it's very hard to justify buying this lense, but if you have the budget then the sony wins 100%.

The 35 GM is definetaly the sharpest lens (my favorite lens)... but my question would be... have you ever had chance to test out the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8? because I was thinking of getting the 70-200 GM II as well, but 35-150 is just so much more useful range, especially doing run and gun video shooting... not missing moments switching lenses... also cheaper lens, with great built quality.
@officalmattknows
@officalmattknows 3 ай бұрын
honestly the 35-150 was the only lens I had to think twice about before grabbing the 70-200, ultimately I went with the GM mk ii, for the 1st party features (oss, better autofocus, breathing compensation, & sharpness) but truthfully I could see much more use from a 35-150 and now have done weddings I can see the 35-150 to overrule the 70-200 as an all around lens to carry all day. plus its performance is really great for a 3rd party lens!

@@officalmattknows Yeah and I just updated the firmware via Tamron's utility app... the video AF tracking got even better. I mainly shoot videos (events or travel content) but I wanna get into indoor sports like basketball and a lot of people told me, they bought this lens too, because they realized its easier to do those sports with 1 body 1 lens instead of having 2 cameras with 24-70 & 70-200. The weight is the same technically as the 70-200 GM II (with the lens hood and tripod collar on ~ 1200g). Honestly when I travel I only bring only my A7IV with the GM 16-35mm (27-60mm w/ active steady shot and focus breathing turned on) for video and this 35-150 for photo. When I work this lens itself is such a beast... at 35mm f2, makes me barely touch my GM 35 f1.4 sadly and that's my favorite lens... :D

Funny I have some of the same lenses you have other than this 70-200, which I am considering getting, this or the Sigma I actually own the 28-200 Tamron, that is versatile but I need something higher end with better auto focus

that’s crazy!! honestly if u have the budget to go for sony do it but if not don’t stress it, get the sigma save the money, BUT IF U DO HAVE THE BUDGET 70-200 sony GM!

@@officalmattknows they seem similar enough in image quality and autofocus. But the 15 fps rapid shooter cap vs 30fps on the GM -and lack of extenders on the sigma That doesn’t effect me the weight matters most but half the price 😬

if you’re able to spend the funds needed for the 70-200 mk ii 2.8 I think it’s definitely worth it! I still use this lens almost 80% of the time for most shoots! especially for events where you want to be out of the action!

The Tamron 70-180G1 isn't a better lens than the 70-200GM1. Compared to the G Master the Tamron falls behind in the following features: no IBIS, telescopic zoom, only 180mm, no removable tripod collar, not parfocal, plastic build, no manual focus override, no focus hold buttons, only capable of 15fps (Vs 30fps), only 9 aperture blades (worse bokeh), Teleconverter compatibility, no hatch in lens hood to adjust filters, no manual/auto focus switch. The GM1 has nearly all the 'features' you say you like about the GM2, it's just not quite as sharp (as one of the sharpest lenses ever made) and it's heavier, but significantly cheaper, especially used you can find it for 60% less money than the GM2.
