The differences between the 1.8 and the 1.4 GM are worthy of consideration... once the photographer has their methodology, composition and process on lockdown. It's pretty easy (and fun, exciting, amusing, et al) to run down the rabbit hole of camera equipment superiority, but as far as I'm concerned, I've got a long way to go in building my shooting skills before dropping an extra $1.2k on a lens that has some subtle (yet powerful) differences. And the 5k+ viewers that have watched this video, I'd wager a good amount of them are in the same camp as me. TLDR the price of a G Master lens is worth it if you yourself are a G Master of photography.

To be honest I don't think there is enough difference between the results from the lenses to warrant the price difference. I'd stick with the cheaper one. The GM just doesn't give enough of an improvement. That's just my opinion

Thanks for the video! I am torn between which lens to get. I ordered the Sony A7IV for my first camera. It is expensive but a firm investment. I mainly need it for vlogging and KZfaq content/some street photography. I can only afford one lens at this time and although the GMasters are the best, they are too expensive. I'm going for either this 85mm or the Viltrox 85mm If you were in the same situation and you can only get one lens, which would you chose?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Жыл бұрын
the 85 is really only good for portraits. (head and shoulder shots) or far away street photography. you will not be able to Vlog with it. If you’re only buying one lens and you want vlogging, KZfaq and street photography, look at the Sony 20mm f1.8. it is the best lens for those purposes and has excellent quality - as good as the G-Masters. if you ever want an 85mm for portraits, look at the Sony 1.8 - it’s an amazing lens and one of the most affordable on the Sony lineup.

Great review. I have a question. Which lens would you choose between sony 85mm 1.8 and sigma 56mm 1.4 for ZV-E10?
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 2 жыл бұрын
Probably the 56 because of its size and weight and that it translates to the 85mm focal length for normal portraits. Plus it’s 1.4 so you get a shallower depth of field and better lowlight. The 85 from Sony on the ZV-E10 will give you about a 130mm equivalent at f2.7 depth of field
@aydin.berlin
@aydin.berlin 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks for answering so fast. I appreciate it. I thought that the apertures of FF lenses are the same on APS-C bodies and 85mm f1.8 is equivalent to 130mm f1.8. But when it is f2.7 vs f1.4 than it is an easy choise :)
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 2 жыл бұрын
@@aydin.berlin it’s a 1.8 in terms of the lights - so same brightness. But in terms of depth of field (background blur) it is like a 2.7. But remember the Sigma 56 1.4 is equivalent to 85mm f2.1 (in terms of background blur)

I got the 35mm 1.8 (because at 35mm the difference between 1.4 and 1.8 is barely noticeable) and for my 85mm I went with a Sigma DG DN 1.4 ones because it costs only 1,100 EUR and it's a 85mm 1.4! My next lens will be either the 135mm 1.8 GM or the 70-200mm 2.8.

Hey Mark. One request. If possible, please do. Compare the 85mm 1.8 (non g master) with the Signa 56 1.4 using both in an apsc body. I am debating between these. I know for sure Sigma is excellent, but wondering if the extra mm of Sony might come in handy, because i like shooting far distances like buildings and scenaries. Also, will help if i upgrade to ff later. Overall, besides price, what would be the disadvantage of getting sony 85 1.8 instead of Signa 56 1.4 fir sony apsc? Thanks 😊

I use the 85 all the time for slo mo shots on the zv-e10 and for street photography. but it’s very far away so taking portraits of people requires you to back up quite a bit. the 56 would be better for portraits.

My wife would not justify $1200 more for better bokeh and too sharp lens shows too much wrinkles. You can of course get tiffen mist filter or for much less money, use a kit lens that is soft by itself. Great lenses and if you earn money 💰 doing portraits sure will pay off.

Honestly, I do not see enough of a difference between ANY of the FE and G Master lenses to justify the giant crevice that separates them price wise. I just don't. Now, if you are the ONLY one that will ever see your videos or look at your photographs, then sure, go for it. Pixel peep until your head blows up. But, I wouldn't waste money on lenses that cost as much and sometimes MORE than the cameras they're designed for. Camera companies create these near identical lenses because they know people always assume that you "get what you pay for". And yes, in most circumstances, that is true. But, when it comes to FE lenses and G Master lenses, I just don't see it.
