Sony’s top-of-the-line Alpha 1 mirrorless camera checks every spec box and comes with every feature. It’s one of the most capable cameras you can buy. We hit up one of NYC’s fastest cyclists, Terry Barentsen, to see how well it can keep up under pressure.
If you buy something from a Verge link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics policy: bit.ly/2TQsqjB

Awesome review Rebecca! I'm really glad you pointed out the lack of CFExpress type B support. I was really hoping for that speed to finally come to the alpha line to finally get me to upgrade from the a9 but I guess I gotta keep waiting.
@davidschloss2656
@davidschloss2656 3 жыл бұрын
My company does press relationship work for Sony’s imaging division, so this is a genuine question. What would you like to see. CFE type B card do that the A doesn’t do? This can capture 100 50mp raw shots before buffer starts to fill and clears in a second or two. It can do near infinite JPEG, and you can record 8K/30 to it. Since the B is significantly larger, which would increase body size to get dual cars slots (and would probably eliminate the SD/CFE compatibility, what would you like the B-type for? I’d like to bring the answer back to the team. Thanks!
@Griffongob
@Griffongob 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidschloss2656 An excellent question! For context my main focus is sports and pj work so for me its obviously about speed and durability. An example of this would be that CF-B cards offload images faster so if I'm covering a basketball tournament, I can dump my cards faster and send images off to my newspaper faster. From a buffer perspective, I don't think its that I'm holding down the shutter for a crazy amount of time, its more if a hockey team wins a tournament and I'm trying to capture images out on the ice, CF-B gives me just that more confidence in having a cleared buffer to empower to just fire off bursts to capture reactions in all directions. If I'm doing 30 fps bursts thats only a little more than 3 seconds to fill the buffer with the CF-A (per your comment above). With the amount of data that a 50MP image has I'm just surprised Sony would opt to not give its flagship camera the fastest possible memory card speed, especially at this price point. CF-B cards are larger but also appear to be more durable than CF-A cards. In addition there seem to be more manufacturer options and more varied price points. I'm more than ok with a little more heft to an a9-iii if it means Sony is empowering me with the fastest possible cards and the highest durability. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat more!

@@davidschloss2656 I prefer Sony's direction in having a piggyback memory card slot for SD and CFexpeess. Typa A is plenty fast. I wish the A9 had it. Another thing is I like the smaller form factor of the Sony bodies.

I’m ordering it Next week with the 100-400 but dancing between 16-35 and 24-105 at moment as second lens might crop in and go with the wide still blooming undecided, but it’s the holy grail for me I’ll use it all, great video

Battery life: it’s quite obvious, why the battery life is quite different: the 100-400 lenses has a lot of Glas and need a lot of energy to bring them in motion. A point which is often forgotten.
@davidschloss2656
@davidschloss2656 3 жыл бұрын
While bigger lenses do require more power than smaller/lighter lenses when all else is equal, that’s probably not the cause here. A lens with a rotational motor takes more energy to move than the linear motors in the 100-400 so that should use less energy than say a similar Tamron or Sigma. Battery life here is a function of processing power. The a7C does 60 focus calculations a second (vs 120 for a1), captures more slowly (so doesn’t need to push as many pixels), and has a lower resolution sensor (so doesn’t process as much data), and was set to 240fps refresh in the evf. In the same way that a battery in a laptop running a browser only lasts longer than one doing heavy photoshop work, a camera with lower processing needs will see longer battery life than a more powerful camera, all things being equal. laNote: I’m from the team that works with Sony’s imaging division to provide support to the press.
