I got my Sony a1 back in June of last year. Coming from a9II and the a6400 previously, the a1 was definitely a huge game changer for me. the biggest attraction for me was it's ability to lock Eyes on Birds which previous Sony Cameras did not have. Being a Bird Photographer first, it was a major need to make it easier to get the photo I hope to get at the moment. All of this alongside it's 50mp which is great to crop or show a lot of detail as well as it's 30fps in Compressed RAW in which is the Format I have used in A9II and it really helped have a higher chance to get that moment. Especially when shooting Birds in flight or other high paced action. I took the a1 with me in Yellowstone which was great. the biggest test though had to be when I went to the Masai Mara in Kenya. There I really pushed the limits on the a1 shooting in ISO levels that I normally don't shoot in and came out with great results. There were even moments where I would use my Dad's a9II with a shorter lens to shoot up close moments and found that the a1 catches animals' eyes more often and accurately than the a9II since the a1 has the newer Eye-Tracking tech. the a1 may be an Expensive Camera, but I find it's worth every penny.

How is the bird eye af? Does it work well?
@BR34K
@BR34K 2 жыл бұрын
@@bluecheese20401 It's hit and miss. I've had the A1 for three weeks now, and I've probably taken 10k bird photos so far. It's really good if you can fill a decent portion of the frame, but I quite often end up using the stick to override focus just as I did on my A7iii. So there are some hugely diminishing returns on the money you spend. But it depends what you're going to photograph. Great for sports. Great for birds if you have a hide. BIF works very well, but eye af isn't really a factor then. I only have the 200-600 though, and I imagine the 400 or 600 primes would be even better. The speed and resolution is the big selling point for birds.

@@bluecheese20401 yes it works. Not 100% like when an bald eagle went by me at close range 30 feet and I had to pan fast 180 degrees at 250mm setting but that was the only time it lagged.

I give a thumbs up for saying straight out that you basically don't give a shit what name is on the camera as long as it delivers. I'm also not sad that you, Jared, sold all your Nikon glasses and cameras. By the way, I could definitely have used a few lenses, but I live in Germany and if your shirts don't make it across the pond, then neither do the lenses. What amazes me the most is that you use Canon for filming and Sony for snapping. Greetings from a small town in Germany from a fan who has met you before at Photokina in Cologne.

Specs, specs and more specs. Look at all the stuff my new camera can do even though I don't need it to. If I drive a limo to a wedding, do I need one that can go 200mph? Lately there seems to be way too much emphasis on tech over composition and the art of photography. Having lost out to smartphones I guess this is how camera manufacturers and those promoting, them are trying to survive. Your videos about actual photography were so much more enjoyable.

If the specs you’re talking about are thinks like 4K, 120p or 8K then yes, I do need it to do that. Anything less hurts my retinas. I think 8K is the limit of what I desire but I won’t be happy until 60p happens and if they’re going that far they might as well go to 120p. Maybe in 2023.

Z9 for me. Staying in the Nikon metaverse. It is expensive enough to go Z without having to replace all my f mount glass at once. Did you use a pro filter in this video? So professorial and leisurely paced. I don't know why you would change systems at this point given how much you like the A1 unless you needed the pro build of the other two for some reason. That can make a significant difference for landscape and wildlife photographers who shoot in difficult conditions. It will be interesting to see which cameras are used at the winter Olympics. Canon R3 #1 I would think.

Z9 for me. I have been a Nikon shooter for 12+ years and am very happy with their products, especially the glass. Sure other manufacturers may have some better performing features, BUT, we have been getting perfect results with cameras such as the D850, for several years and the differences between the A1, the R3 and the Z9 are too insignificant to warrant jumping brands every time one leapfrogs the other - that is just a crazy policy.

Great video, crazy how the A1 is still ahead of the competition even though it released a year earlier. So, some obvious improvements for a future firmware update: - HI+ should automatically override the raw to compressed, and when you turn the dial back to Hi/Med/Lo, then it should revert to the previous setting, presumably lossless compressed. - automatic flicker frequency detection => choose the closest shutter speed, like the Canon R3

Just for info, the need of shooting uncompressed is kind of not needed you can shoot lossless compressed on the A1 in full 14bits. Now at 30 fps also many reviewers assume we fall back to the 12bits compressed format sony has been using up to this point. (just check the exif data) but the A1 stays in 14 bits (also in the manual. Now why does sony now put 14bits in the exif data and not 12bits is simple it uses a new lossycompressed mode that turns out to be 13bits. Af far as i know nobody has yet tested the new A1 edge cases with compressed raw '13bits' vs the '12bits' one of say the A7R4 or R3 and that should be done. Recap A1 always shoots 14bits but in compressed mode (only enforced at 30fps) the compression seems to be resulting in 13bits images. What Jared is asking for is that you can set the mode pre speed (or per dial setting since they have that menu anyway) makes perfect sense and i hope sony will do that. I will also try todo a 'old' compressed 12bits review vs the new 14/13bits compressed mode in the known edge cases if i can find some time.

Delayed gratification. Then the A1 was announced and it ticked all of my boxes for photos and video. It just doesn't get in the way, no matter what I'm shooting. I don't have to compromise at all. Looking forward to what Sony does with the A1 Mark II but I don't expect any big changes until the Mark III. By then I may be in a position to upgrade...after I pay off this A1 personal loan. haha

Hey Jared I have a major question to ask you... I shoot on the R3, and the c70 for video... I am looking for a small camera to pair with the R3 for weddings,. I have gone through all of them... and already owned the R5 before, sold for the R3. And I think The a1 would be a great sister camera to the R3. What do you think?

Hey brother what would you recommend for someone doing both photography and video in terms of a single camera and lens(es) if budget/cost was unlimited? So far I am thinking either Sony Alpha 1 (A1), Sony A7IV, or A7SIII . Ignore prices, I looking to buy once/cry once on most versatile camera & lens(es) setup.

@@ThreeCeeProductions definitely. I think that’s the point many people miss. But also the R5 already is the competition to Sonys A1 and it actually beats it in many aspects + plus the insane price difference. Sony is said to have the most lenses available but that’s actually only partly true. Because those lenses are mostly third parties in the mid range. They still miss the high quality stuff and it took them now 10-20 years to bring out a basic 50 f1.2. One day more will come, I am sure. But it will take a lot of time for them to catch up with just the basic lenses, if their current hardware even allows it. On the other side Canon is pushing out all the premium L lenses + unique ones and are now starting to bring out those crazy VR lenses. I don’t think Sony has a chance to keep up in this regards. And for professionals, the ecosystem especially lenses are a primary factory when considering brands. I personally couldn’t imagine having no access to such gems like the 28-70 f2 or the 70-200 f2.8 and all those f1.2 lenses.

I realize that Canon and Nikon build quality glass too. However, I am really pleased with some of the lenses that Sony has come out in the past three years. Light, sharp, and with extremely low flare. There was no reason to assume that Sony would have been able to do this, but they did it somehow. @@Mr09260 , I have found that lens quality can make a huge difference in my photography. As an old guy, I find it a real delight to get sharp images edge to edge, with detail in the deepest shadows, and buttery smooth bokeh. I'll leave mount design to the engineers. They're obviously doing something right. As far as enabling-technology that really counts, Sony has dual processors in its A1 and overall a four year head start on the tricky engineering of producing stacked sensors at reasonable cost.

Lumix G9 shooter here. I can definitely see myself buying the A1 when I really start to make money on this stuff, for now MFT is just fine and the G9 allowed me to get a superb camera feature-wise for really not that much money (used, 800eur). I just feel like Nikon will always be the go-to for outdoor/wildlife photographers for the insane build quality (look at how Morten Hilmer treats his!!) but the speed and quality the A1 produces is next to nothing. If somehow, Sony and Nikon got together to create the Alpha 1Z or something similar, that would end all debates forever. Canon really aren't my cup of tea, I just cant see one specific thing they do better than anyone else. Sony have their low light and AF performance, Nikon is built to last a generation and are very quickly catching up to Canon and Sony's AF, but Canon are just... Canon? They're pretty well built and reasonably fast/good quality but honestly I would put my lil G9 up against some of their APSc cameras and be pretty confident that I could destroy them in things like wildlife/sports shooting. Obviously the newer cameras are quite good, but I feel like I'll always just have three horses in my race - Lumix, Nikon and Sony

You have made some valid points of course. I personally think that Sony menus are misunderstood, Sony designed the camera with so many customizable buttons so that you do not have to use the menus, yes it's a pain maybe on your first 2 days, but once you set them up, you can pretty much forget about the menus completely. BTW you can save 3 different sets of buttons on your dial (I typically use one for studio/flash, sports, landscape). MFT and APSC are great systems too, I just wish they had better AF tracking, no PDAF is a deal breaker if you shoot moving subjects, video, sports and wildlife.

The next A1 needs to remove the dials for the frame rate and auto-focus modes and also change the main settings dial to match that on the A7m4. I hate the fact that I cannot just switch from memory 1 to 2 and have the frame rate speed change with it all the other settings. If people really feel the need for the switch then they need to let us be able to override it through the menu system. I hope that any future ones will still be without the battery grip. I do not find that there are many days in which I need a 2nd battery and the few in which I do, I don't have any issues with replacing the one quickly. I would much rather not have that extra weight with the option of adding it later than to only always have that extra weight.

For the A7 lines you can set the shooting rate per memory setting because you lack that dial control.
