HEIF uses the algorithm that H.265 compresses a frame. 420, 422, 444 are modes of "chroma subsampling". A signal with chroma 4:4:4 has no compression (so it is not subsampled) and transports both luminance and color data entirely. In a four by two array of pixels, 4:2:2 has half the chroma of 4:4:4, and 4:2:0 has a quarter of the color information available. The 4:2:2 signal will have half the sampling rate horizontally, but will maintain full sampling vertically. 4:2:0, on the other hand, will only sample colors out of half the pixels on the first row and ignores the second row of the sample completely.

I too have heard nothing but bad about Sony menus but this is my first look into them and can't see a problem.

Always great to see how someone else uses the A1 ! I will try wide instead of zone focusing for example ! Publishing my 50 favourites taken so far with the A1 tomorrow ! Certainly the best camera I have ever owned ! Great work Mike 👍👍👍

I heard the same thing about the olympus menu. Menus are menus, you soon adapt. I like using the C3 button suggestion. It's a hard button to use but this use is perfect. Thanks for the video.

Nice one Mike, always helpful to see how others set things up.. Interested to see you favour auto ISO? Custom buttons are brilliant, so easy to switch for that perching bird against that in flight..

Moving my bird photography to Sony from Olympus, this was very helpful. Yes, changing finder framerate drops the quality.

Even in e mode the shutter can protect the sensor: in camera menu, choose silent mode settings, set silent mode on and target function settings to ‘Shutter when power’ off. No need to program a button. Simply disable this if sensor needs to be cleaned…

in case of attaching A1 on tripod upside-down for ground level shots. how can I turn the view on its monitor?

Thanks for sharing your info there Mike. It's interesting how individual settings differ - for example I've only been using electronic shutter (my previous action camera was the a9 which again was almost exclusively electronic shutter) and I have 'anti-dust function' set to 'on' so that the shutter closes when I power off.

Interesting. When I am in electronic shutter mode the option to close shuuter on power off is greyed out and it does not close. Can't think what other setting might cause this.

@@MikeLaneFRPS That seems odd. I have silent mode set to off, shutter to electronic and then in yellow menu #9 volume settings 0 and audio signals off (it still records sound when shooting video). Another difference I noticed was I also have APS-C shooting set to off (I press C1 to toggle APSC on/off).

@@MikeLaneFRPS I’ve set my A1 to close the mechanical shutter when switching the camera off. This works even when the electronic shutter is set (which, in my case, is 99.9% of the time). I’m guessing that, if you set this option whist manual shutter is set, it will continue to operate irrespective of the shutter mode set at the point of switching off. Thanks for taking the time to share your settings.

Great video Mike as always. For the life of me I don’t understand why you don’t have MANY more subscribers!!! Yours are my most anticipated videos. Just got my A1 and 200-600. Having trouble with small birds. Wondering if it’s my Steady Shot settings. What do you advise on and off tripod/gimbal?

I am told its because I am not cute looking. That's holding me back. I leave Steadyshot on all the time and most of my pictures are taken on a tripod. This was the same with my Canon and Olympus gear.

I’ve seen a lot of comments on this subject. Most people start off using too slow a shutter speed with this camera/lens combo. Patrick Murphy-Racey is a Sony Artisan - he posted a very interesting video on it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrGUlrd11Mzco6s.html if I’m shooting 1/3200 or faster, I turn stabilisation off.

Great video Mike,just got my A1+ 200/600 and enjoying it.My previous camera was the A7r3 with this lens combo.My only problem is that I cannot open Raw files from A1 in Lightroom classic.could you tell me what OS and editing programme you use?Hoping you can help,as my goal is allways the Print.

Currently I am raw processing in DxO Pureraw and converting the files to DNG files. From their you can use any raw processor.

Long time sony shooter here. Maybe of note: - "Priority Set in AF-C" set to "AF" may drop even long sequences during peak action, merely because it can't confirm focus; "Balanced" seems a better bet - "Shutter When Pwr OFF" is greayed out because you are in silent mode (which forbids using the shutter even on power down); I'd instead disable the beep and switch to electronic shutter without using silent mode - only lossless compressed allows full 30fps shooting (otherwise speed defaults to 20fps max) - currently not much software supports 10bit HEIF, so e.g. neither HEIF variant will work with the current version of capture one - preview, zebra and histogram are based on JPEG output, even if you are shooting RAW - many settings affecting JPEG but not RAW (d-range, sharpening, etc) still affect video and live preview - if you wana use zebra for overexposure warnings, setting it to "Lower Limit", "109+" works very well for RAW with little faff

You should even use Release instead of Balanced for AFC otherwise you do NOT get the 30 fps. Thats one of the reasons Mike is claiming that he only gets 27 fps.
