For those who dont know. If u turn off the auto viewfinder setting and keep either the screen or the viewfinder on, it saves a ton of battery life. I rarely use the view finder unless its extremely sunny out. Then i toggle it on. Otherwise i just turn that feature off. For some reason that little sensor eats a ton of battery from my experience.

I watched this video before I got the camera, and when I did, it became pretty obvious that this is needed. I probably wouldn't have guessed covering part of the sensor would make it less sensitive, so this is a great advice and I thank you so much for it!

This is the first new digital camera I've gotten since a Canon in 2005...been using my cell phone for the longest time. I did a ton of research after seeing some great photos with an Alpha in a local photography group. I know very little about the tech aspect of photography, so started to learn a some in general, but found the settings on the camera so overwhelming, I finally went outside today with it for the first time after a few months of owning it, and screen kept going blank, so I just went searching & found this video. I was in cold weather so was really frustrated! I am now regretting getting this camera -- an expensive camera shouldn't have this issue, but mostly, it's because it has too many bells and whistles for me. The other camera I was considering before this was an Olympus Tough, because I like macro. If anyone sees his and wants to weigh in/make me feel better about this purchase, please do! As well, if you know of any instruction that goes through ALL of the settings and how to navigate them, I would really appreciate it. I basically need in-person instruction, but probably not gonna happen for awhile during the pandemic.

I don't use that view finder... I have a problem with taking videos in shaded areas under trees. You know when you take videos under trees your face becomes all shaded but then other parts are so bright. I tried to turn the exposure up but then the background is all bright. Any solution to this?

If you just go to finder/monitor and turn it to monitor it actually turns the view finder off and the sensor doesn't work doesn't detect.

Anybody know Is there a way to turn the sensor off completely? I have an nex 7 (very similar camera) and I broke the screen so have it covered with fake leather.i only use the eye view and wish it would stay on rather than turning off every time I pull it away from my face.have tried covering the sensor completely with tape but that just causes the viewfinder to stay off.

Not much of a problem tbh, for me it's just the right sensitivity. Maybe software updates changed something? Bought mine in 2017

I've never owned a camera before and I bought an a6000 used and I thought it was broken because the screen kept turning off. Thank you. I feel like an idiot.

We had some problems getting the viewfinder of the camera to work, which simply remained black as you would put your eye over it. Thinking it was just a bug in the sensor, we set the camera to "viewfinder only" mode, forcing it into viewfinder mode and which turned off the back lcd screen. However, the viewfinder still didn't work and now the screen won't turn on as well, since it's in viewfinder mode. This means we now can not enter the menu to turn off this function. The camera is still responsive and does still take pictures blindly. We tried switching on/off, random button pushing, trying to access the menu blindly (seeing a youtube video accessing that particular part of the menu) and trying to update the firmware/connecting through a laptop. That last bit also doesn't work, computer can't connect, as it probably needs to be set to USB mass storage mode in the camera menu which we can't access. Any solution?

I had the same problem.I finally turned the viewfider off and use the screen.If u wear glasses, the viewfinder is useless.

Why not switch it from AUTO to whichever mode you use most !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Custom Settings" > "3" > "FINDER/MONITOR" > then select just monitor if you don't want to use the view finder.

You are soooo smart!!!! If Sony didn't put that sensor, you abvously said it is annoying,too!!! It is better you send your specifications for them and they will make special camera for you.... Also, you are not an honest reviewer.... You just make videos and try to show yourself shy...
