This video is my full review of the Tamron 150-500mm lens paired with the APS-C sized sensor Sony a6600 camera body. This setup yields the equivalent focal length of 225-750mm, which is awesome for wildlife. I cover slow moving subjects, video capabilities and lens performance with BIF/fast action in this review.
Thanks for watching.

Hi Don, great informative video as always. I have the A9 and 200-600 with 1.4x tele. My main interest is birds and BIF all sizes, here in southern spain lighting is usually very good. I like using my current setup, though as you mention it can get heavy, what I do miss is the extra reach that my previous Nikon D500 had as an APS-C camera. So I’m thinking would it be worth getting the A6600 to grab that extra reach and maintain the 24mp? I have used the A9 in crop mode but I believe it drops to around 10mp? Does the A6600 have blackout on 11fps I’ve gotten used to no blackout on the A9. Sorry for the long post, To summarise if I did decide to get the A6600 would I have regrets? Thanks again for really great videos.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey tony, Thanks for watching and for the comment. Yes, there is a bit of a blackout when using the A6600 on it's fastest frame rate. It never bothers me at all but it is there. I find that the form factor of the A9 is better for me and the AF is better as well compared to the A6600. With your 2-600 and the 1.4x you're getting 840mm of power. Sure you can get more with the crop sensor bodies but I find that atmospheric effects sometimes start to negatively impact my images when going beyond that. As for the crop mode on the A9 - yes, it's only 10MP but if using for the web/Instagram etc. this is plenty of resolution. I do this all the time when the atmosphere is clear.

Exactly the video I was looking forward to :D Well done, thanks a lot for this ! :) Do you happen to be able to compare it with the 200-600 or the 70-350 ? I currently own the 70-350 and wonder if the tamrons reach is worth double the weight of my 70-350. And I wonder if there is a big difference in reach between the Tamron and the sony 200-600 and vs 70-350.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Yes I did compare with the Sony 200-600mm both are VERY close with all subjects except for BIF where the Sony has a bit of an edge. Depends on what your main subject is but if birds then YES, the extra reach vs. the 70-350 is totally worth the extra weight. Surprisingly the Tamron is really lightweight and a JOY to use. Thanks for watching.

Nice review! I just wanted to ask, i have a Sony a6400, and if i have subject detection on animal instead of human, which seem to me as a good idea. (Im new to photography) I realised i cannot use focus mode ”Tracking”. Is it better to have subject detection on human and use tracking focus for slow moving animals or other option?
@DonMammoserPhoto

Hi, For that camera I think it would be better to turn off the subject detection completely and then use the focus mode "tracking". This will give you the best results. Thanks for watching and subscribing, I do appreciate it.

Don, Excellent video and shots ! So sorry for you where you live. Holy Cow so many great subjects. Do you find a problem with 6600 cropping images with the 24mp's ? I have a A6400 that only mostly use for travel and casual shooting. I love the 43mp's on my A99 II full frame which you can crop so much without losing quality. I thought I'd have to move to full frame on an E mount but you have me wondering crop sensor might work for wildlife. Thanks for your recommended camera settings ! Thanks for response.

Hi Ed, I appreciate you watching. I'll crop my images from the a6600 without a problem. Noise can be an issue above ISO 1600 but software can deal with that. Regarding cropping I do have a video on that from a full-frame camera kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJaEac2pnrLdnGQ.html I'd say that roughly the same goes for the cropping of the a6600.

Thanks for the review! Are you sure it's the lens to blame for bad quality on BIF ? APS-Cs tend to have bad AF. How does it perform in low light too?
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching. I don't think the lens has bad quality at all on BIF or anything else. It's a great lens and I wouldn't say that my Sony a6600 APS-C has "bad AF" either. The combination is excellent. Low light performance could always be better but then again that is the case with every single camera or lens I've ever owned.

Thanks for a really good video Don! I was thinking of moving to a Sony A7IV when I saw the bird eye focus in operation but altogether with a telephoto lens it is a bit expensive for me plus it is full frame. The body itself is over $3,500 AU. So now I might go for the A6600 plus the Tamron 150-500mm Telephoto. This would be instead of my Panasonic G9 with the Leica 100-400mm zoom. But why is the A6600 still over $2,000 AU here in Australia? The Panasonic G9 is only around $1272 AU now. What benefits might I gain by changing to the A6600? Should have said that wildlife and particularly birds plus sports with my two sons playing AFL (football) would be the main use with this combination.

Hi glad I could help a bit. As for the a6600 with the Tamron 150-500mm, I love this combo and the 750mm reach is great. Anytime you get a larger sensor (APS-C vs. micro 4/3rds) your overall image quality will go up with less noise etc. The a6600 has great AF. Not familiar with how it compares to the Panasonic cameras but it works flawlessly for me.

How is the AF accuracy and speed comparing to sony 70-350? I'm thinking about tamron 150-500 for birds, but love AF speed & accuracy of 70-350, if its big difference then better keep low on weight.

@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
I can't compare the 2 as I only have the Tamron lens. But realistically the longer focal length is priceless for bird photography. If you only photograph large mammals then I suppose the 70-350 would be adequate. I 'll take the longer reach with birds any day.

Hey Ron, I think both lenses have their place among us wildlife photographers. From using the Tamron the last few weeks I got used to the lightness of it and then when going back to my Sony 200-600mm I get sore arms really fast! Also I do like the locking mechanism on the Tamron and wish the Sony had a way to lock it at the 600mm range. But if doing BIF I'd reach for the Sony every time. Good to hear from you.

Don, you convinced me to try this lens on my A6400. I received yesterday, it's a beast (weight wise). Never had a super tele before. It seems to acquire focus fast. Could you share opinion on focus limiter setting for this or all long telephotos? It's not something I've noticed anyone mention on reviews. This lens has three modes. Full, 3M and 15M. It would seem 15M would be pretty close for seeing wildlife so that seems to be a good compromise. Which do you recommend. I've occasionally had focus misses on my 70-300mm G series (in Alpha mount) and wondered if this could be why. Thanks again.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, sure, the focus limiter switch can be confusing at first. I normally leave mine on "full" and this means that the entire focus range will be covered while looking for a subject. It sounds like a lot but it happens so fast I just leave it there 99% of the time. If I know my subject will be very close by, then occasionally I will change this to the infinity to 3m setting. But yes, you need to remember to change this back to "full" once you go where the subject might be at a distance. Enjoy your lens, I love mine.
