Wow! "Neutral" creative style (I compared it on my TV vs. "standard" -> I never thought I would like "neutral". But I do. "standard" is too saturated.), manual white balance and shutter release button to start recording. It makes such a difference... I will have to try the options from the "pro" section in the second half of the video... Ach... To discover "small" things like these makes me smile :-)

Thanks for the great video! Just had a few questions.. ~ You mention you shoot with all settings "manual," but do you still shoot video in the "video" mode? Or switch to the "manual" mode? ~ You mention that while one can film in any mode, Video mode will display the video aspect ratio? Does this mean if I shoot movies in another mode the aspect ratio will be different? ~If I select a "creative style" option or "picture profile" are these baked in to what I shoot? or only for reference while shooting? ~ You mention you would do a rack focus with the "touch" option, but how do you do this if in "manual focus"? Is there a way to quickly toggle between AF and MF? ~ If I understand correctly, it seems option 1 you mention (switch to HD and go to 120 frame mode) is a better option for shooting slow motion as it retains audio and records at a higher mbs than the S&Q mode slow motion options ~ So what's the point of using S&Q mode? Just for fast motion shooting like time lapse? Apologies for the many questions! Thank you for such a helpful video as I learn this camera :)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Video mode with the video exposure mode set to manual (as demonstrated in the video). The video aspect is 16x9, so if you're in a different mode it switches from the stills aspect to the video aspect as you press the button. This takes time and means you don't see the correct composition before recording. In video everything is baked in - there is no RAW mode for video. If you intend to do colour correction or adjustment later, you will be modifying the settings that you recorded. Sony lenses (with the exception of the cinema lens) don't have an accurate ability to hit a focus point manually, so doing a manual rack focus will be very hit and miss and frustrating.

A lot to take in, I'll be watching this a few times for sure, thanks for all the work. I have this camera on order and am looking forward to using it. I am disappointed though that Sony chose not to include built in ND filters as they have on my Sony dedicated video cameras or as Panasonic have on my Lumix FZ 2500. Will you be doing an update on your video on the a7ii for the a7 iii using Canon L glass? I have ordered the Metabones V. I am hoping my L lenses perform well with that.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Typically cameras with interchangeable lenses don't have built-in ND. Thanks for the request, not sure that's worth doing - but I'll add it to the "topics to think about" list.

Great video as always, Maarten. I did watch the video a couple of times on the video settings, too technical but still understandable. I have accidentially found that when I set to shoot only RAW in the camera, I still be able to transfer photos to the phone via Playmemories mobile, and the photos become JPG in the phone. It acts like a RAW conversion to me, so I think RAW conversion in camera is not neccessary. What do you think?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for the tip, I'll have to remember that next time I complain about this. Typically though, the RAW conversion tool in other cameras has features like white balance adjustment and highlight/shadow adjustment, which would also be nice to have.

Hi there I’m from the future Lol. I just got my a73 last week and am in the middle of the learning curve. I’ve been shooting video with Panasonic cameras for the last three years. Gh4, gh5, and gh5s. Finally made the jump to full frame! I’m trying to find an in depth video explaining what the picture profile in depth settings do to the scene. I’m used to vlog l on Panasonic and know the basics of grading, but so y has so many more options to change! Anyways, have you made a more advanced video on the pictures profiles, or do you know of another good source I could learn from? Thanks for your videos!

I knew they would invent time travel! There's this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7Zoo6x8vqjRgGQ.html and this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZtyrLOc2s7ZfWg.html. I'm not familiar with Vlog, so really can't comment on the difference (Panasonic has never been willing to lend me a camera with the "upgrade"). But here's the thing about Slog. Don't use it unless you have to. Between the higher ISO and the 8 bit recording, compressing the available 8-9 stop range of REC709 into 5-6 stops to give you more room for the 11-12 stops that SLog2 or Slog3 provides, with their higher noise floor, is just not a good quality decision - unless you really need the dynamic range (bright sun scene, talent in shade). If you tone down the colour in camera, you will have a heck of a time recovering it in post, as it's just not there to recover. Create the look you want in camera as much as possible, make minor adjustments in post as needed - as now you can reference a waveform and vectorscope. But the more you try to modify the 8 bit coming from a A7 III, the worse it will look. Hope this helps,

The Distillery District is immediately recognized even from being there just once or twice. There are a lot of unique photo ops throughout there. Maarten hello and thank you very much for the explanation. Please, can you clear for me which slow mo you prefer? The one you showed that needs to slow down in post production or the other one, the seven mins one with no audio. Please forgive me for my stupid question. I have the camera but completely clueless about it. And if you will ever answer me, can you please advice me on which settings I should shoot footage that has to be in normal speed and in slow mo as well. As I not always know in advance which part of the clip I will slow down in post production and which I will need in the normal 24-30 frames. 🙏🙏🙏

This was an excellent video, Maarten. You covered a lot of information in a very compelling 20 minute video. I had my A7iii in hand as I watched it, pausing frequently to adjust my camera's settings. I was wondering if you had any additional insights into shooting spotlit performers on stage. I'm guessing I need to set the metering mode to highlight and some sort of spot metering to make sure the subjects on stage aren't over exposed. (I shot a band in a theater tonight and, while I was careful to try not to "blow out" the faces of the performers, they still look a little hot for my liking. It's always challenging (to a videographer and his camera!) to properly expose a bright person on a dark stage, especially when you're working from some distant. Care to share any insights? Thanks in advance!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. I'd go past the "novice" settings in the beginning and move along to advanced for this. Use manual exposure (for aperture (F4), shutter (1/60) and ISO, and use your eye to determine the correct exposure for the performers while adjusting ISO. The zebra, set at 70 (for performers with "white" skin, a little lower for darker skin tones) will help, but your eye is the best judge. An external monitor that gives you a better view might also be useful. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I do appreciate the kind words. 1) The frame rate of your final production should govern the frame rate of your recordings. If you need to capture a high speed event (to slow it down in post) then use 120 frames. 2) If you want slow motion, and you shot using the regular video mode at 120 frames, you can use FCP to slow 120 frame footage down to 20% without requiring interpolated frames. If you used S&Q, you don't.

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
That's very kind of you to say, appreciated. With either setting, the resulting footage is still recorded in 4K. What this setting changes is the amount of the sensor used to capture the image. The APS-C area is smaller and as a result, it looks as if you've zoomed in about 50%. The size and resolution of this sensor means that even for 4K (with its 8Mp resolution) isn't compromised even with the APS-C crop.

I'd say that sounds about right - I'd pick Cine3 or 4. Might turn down the detail and saturation slightly to reduce the noise. Also, keep skin tones down so that they're at 70% zebra (assuming white skin). That too will help, as the ISO will be lower.

Your advice is most welcome to a beginner of slow-motion here. So the S&Q works well but only 16mbs as you say. If I go to standard settings and change to 100fps at 100mbs and shoot at shutter 200. When looking back at the footage in the camera it plays at normal speed. So in post to slow it down when I select a new project in Final Cut Pro it doesn’t allow me to select a frame rate of 100fps only a max of 60fps as a new project. So do I just open a normal Pal project of 25fps and then import the 100 fps footage and then speed ramp it down in post to the desired slow motion speed?

Correct, you set the final cut project frame rate to the playback speed. I'd suggest 30fps, and then use the speed tool to slow the playback to the desired effect.

I have none, and do run into similar issues with all kinds of connections under all kinds of circumstances. Often that requires re-initializing the camera and/or the gimbal, but patience and persistence is likely the best guidance.

Right. I don't have a solution. In my work I don't use proxy files, so no need to relink. I realize that is not a solution for many editors. My process is to create dated folders with sub folders for each camera, project or location and transfer the entire "private" folder from the card to a storage drive and import to the NLE from there. Although I don't, I suppose it's possible to rename/renumber the files (remember to renumber the .xml files too) after they've been copied, which will make them easier to identify. Another solution is to use larger capacity cards, so you don't have so many "restarts".

24p 100MB gives 6K downsampling to 4K video as it uses the entire senor. 30p gives 5K downsampled to 4k and is therefore slightly cropped.. So 24 100MB is the best quality on the a7iii so long as you are happy with the cinema style effect that it also gives due to lower fps.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Well, yes, but the tradeoff for 24 fps, as nearly all displays are 30 fps means that 6 frames are being interpolated every second. I'd go with the 30 fps. I don't feel that downsampling from 6 or 5K makes much of a difference. In fact, if there was an option that used a pure 4K area of the sensor, with no down sampling and pure 1:1 that would be my preference.

@@robbyy8709 Two answers - I'd probably just shoot at 16x9 as that provides greater flexibility - you might want to letterbox in post to give a more cinematic wide screen feel, but it's a creative choice. On a tripod, steady shot isn't nearly as steady as the tripod, and introduces a crop. There's also the problem that as you start a slow and easy pan the camera tries to hold the shot and then jumps as it realizes that you've exceeded the steady shot boundary. I'm wondering why they don't just get the Batis 25mm. The Sigma 16mm is a terrific lens, but it's heavier and is designed for APS-C of course, but that could also be why they're using it--in case they have or plan to also get an A6xxx as a B-roll backup?
