Thanks for a great video Jason! The connection process you outline here works perfectly! I have run into an issue with my A7IV and imaging Edge that I can't figure out, it's a bit of a long shot but I thought I'd ask just the same 🙂 When I connect to my A7IV with Imaging edge then the connection is fine, but I can only start a recording not stop it again? I am having the same issue with my other app: Monitor+ pro which I suspect means that this is a camera setting or an app thing. Do you have any suggestions or did you run into this? Thanks! Don't worry if you don't have time to answer, that's fine too.

The best function is definitely the possibility of switching and choosing the focus on touch, this will help a lot in precision and in not vibrating the camera when running!

not to mention for gimbal use, being able to see what target your camera is focusing on all the time. thats where the monitor+ app fails

Thanks Jason! Does it allow focus tap for photo? As i recall, the the app didnt allow us to do that for photo right? Because canons phone app allows us to focus tap from the phone

Thanks for all your video tutorials, I learn a lot. I saw this video here on how to control the camera with imaging edge. I have a sony Fx30 and the focus control not work from the app, I can not change the focus touching the screen or change to face recognition. What do you think about? Is an error from the app or I did something wrong. The firmware from my camera is 1.0 I could not update because a firmware problem yet. Maybe the problem was there, in the old firmware I have in my camera. Sorry about my little English. Greetings from Spain.

Hi Jason, Love your new version of I E. I use a Sony A7M4 and am confused how the Touch to Track functions. I have set up the option in the menu,touched my models face for example, then pressed the shutter to focus. The confusing part, if the model moves side to side it stays in focus. If she moves forwards or backwards it goes out of focus, is this correct. I was hoping that after setting touch to track the model could move in any direction and I would get a sharp image. My tracking is set to Wide. What am I doing wrong, please help. Many thanks

Hey jason , great vdeo btw.. i was able to connect it to the phone but the still having trouble with the image quality that is being transferred to the phone..its below 1mb..not able to transfer the file with the original file size..pls hlp !!

@@portraitdabbler9221 Hi, very interested in your comment, I also have the A7M4 and using the latest version of Imaging Edge. I was able to select the Touch and tracking focus in the menu but for some strange reason the touch focus and tracking options are no longer visible. The only thing I can recall is when you see the touch focus icon with a x beside it, I hit the cross which seems to have disable this option from the menu an having tried for days, I just can't get this option back into the Menu. If you can help it would be much appreciated ax I an tearing my hair out trying to solve this. Regards Michael

@@MikeT-yy3 The settings that worked for me. "Focus Area" set to "Wide". Go to Setup , page 5 " Touch Operation". Make sure " Touch Operation" is set to "On" . I have "Touch / Pad" set to "Both valid". " Touch Position Mode" set to " Absolute Position". Under Touch Pad settings, select 'Operation Area" as " Whole Screen". "Touch Func. in shooting" should be " Touch Focus". Each time after you start remote shooting on the iphone/ipad app, you must touch on the camera LCD panel. This will enable the touch operation on the app.

@@portraitdabbler9221 Hi, Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation, I followed your instructions and it all worked! Great news. One thing puzzles me, I have used these Touch focus/Tracking options in the I E menu many times previously but I can't remember touching on the LCD Screen to enable these menu settings. I usually use only the EVF and not had this problem. I have tried various combinations of the Touch options but only yours actually work after you touch focus on the LCD screen. Are you aware of any way these menu options can be save or used without resorting to the LCD screen. Once again many thanks, I now feel as though I am getting some success

Thanks for this Jason. I've got both an iPhone 13 Pro and an iPad, and connected the iPhone successfully following your directions. I then connected the iPad, and while it does appear to connect by Bluetooth, when I try either "remote control" or import files on the iPad, it connects by Bluetooth, but does not make the network connection, even though I click "join" when the message appears on the iPad. The message that pops up tells me to make sure "wifi connection of the iPhone(?) is on" (it is) and that remote transfer and remote control are off (they are). What am I doing wrong?

Hey John, You cannot have both devices connected at the same time. Be sure to close the app on the device that you are not using and hopefully that will help. If not, you might have a pairing issue. You can delete the device from the camera and phone and try adding it again. Let me know! Thanks, Jay

Is there anyway for the images to pop up on the iPad after you take them? On my a7iii I would take a photo and it would pop up automatically but they don’t on the A7IV. I have to go into the gallery to review them. Any suggestions?

Yes there are alternatives, but I never used any of them... If you search in the app store on your phone for "Sony Remote App" A bunch come up...

Thanks for your help. I have an iPad as well as a smartphone. I was successful in setting thgat up, but not the iPhone. I told Bluetooth to forget the camera from previous failed installations. I have tried an installation again on the iPhone without success. Jason, the IE software is different in the latest iteration. Can I have IE on both my iPad and iPhone? I would humbly suggest you trying this with an iPhone and the latest camera firmware because something is wrong. Thanks, Paul

Hey Paul, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what your issue is... Yes you can have the IE installed on both devices, but you can only connect one at a time. I will check out the software again, because I have not used it in a while...

5:11 5:52 On on camera firmware V1.11, latest version of the app, you can't import images from ARW to full size, it's a small image, despite changing the settings you did, it won't actually transfer the raw files, it makes a much smaller JPG. The only way to get original size is to shoot in RAW+JPG, and import the JPG.

Thanks for this video. How do yo stop the Imaging Edge app from constantly searching for the camera? On my Android I have a permanent "Camera Search- Searching for camera" notification. My phone also vibrates every time the camera turns on and off. Do you have settings for that you recommend?

My friend, I have a Sony zve10 camera, and I have a problem shooting in the sun, such as in the afternoon, because the camera is without a viewfinder. All the images are either very bright or very dark. Does it really help me to use the program on the iPhone and make sure of each image after shooting or before shooting on the iPhone screen. Yeah, the screen is very hard to see in the sun which is why I always prefer/ recommend a camera with a viewfinder for outdoor use when possible. What you can do is set the monitor brightness to sunny weather, which will help. Hi Jason, After doing some remote shooting is there any way to add a Rating or Colour Tab to images in the Imported Folder or anywhere else. I am looking for a way that a Model can view the images taken during a photoshoot displayed on an Ipad and enable her/him to rate the favourite images to be sent to his/her email

Hey Mike, You can rate the photos on camera and on a computer if you open them in a program that does that like the Imaging Edge Viewer for the desktop. The Imaging Edge Mobile App however does not allow you to rate the images though, which sucks.... If you get Lightroom Mobile for your iPad you can certainly do that though, and it will look very professional. Or you can just use "Photos" and make a quick album for your clients and let them go thru and heart the ones they like? Then you can share the entire album with them or just email the hearted images for them as an example... I hope that helps, Jay

What is the version number for the app? From vid it looks like Bluetooth is the “bootstrap” to Wi-Fi connection. WI-Fi icon lit up when BT was connected. So cam control is over wi-fi or BT? WI-FI disconnects to cam were an issue, in my experience, when controlling device (e.g., tablet) was set to auto-reconnect to another Wi-Fi server (e.g., home router) and the Sony cam connection was paused, if that makes sense. Also, is NFC still a connection option?

Hey Paul, It's version 7.6.0 as of right now. I agree the bluetooth is helping the wi-fi get established. I'm honestly not 100% sure if the wi-fi is for transfers only and the bluetooth is for camera control, or if it's wi-fi for everything once the connection is established. As far as NFC goes, it appears to be gone!

Great video Jason, many thanks, Can you help me with a problem on my A7M4. In order to remote shoot to my ipad I must set the PC Remote function to OFF on the menu at page 40. When set to ON it won't connect to the camera. Note I have the PC Remote Connect Method set to WiFi Direct. This works really well and does not need my home WiFi router switched on. It uses its own generated wifi signal. Now, I have tried to set the same thing up to my Macbook Pro and it won't connect to the camera. Setting the PC Remote function to ON this time allows it to work. Any ideas why the Pc Remoteshould be set to OFF on the Ipad and ON ON THE MACBOOK. I noticed that the A7M4 generated internal wifi is completely different. On the Mac it only works with the network generated for the Mac connected option, won't work with the previous Ipad generated Network. Using the latest Imaging Edge software for each device. I've spent about 3 days solid on the above problem and still don't understand. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mike, welcome to my world of trying to figure out these insane programs from Sony :) They are amazing when they work, but dam are they finicky.... Computers require that you use PC Remote and the Imaging Edge Desktop. That is not the same app as Image Edge Mobile. Imaging edge Desktop required the use of a cable as well when I used it last. This is why the PC Remote feature needs to be on. That is how I used it with he A7C a while back when I created that tutorial. Are you using Imaging Edge Desktop on your MacBook Pro? The iPad is a mobile device, so you don't need PC Remote, just a app to due the translation... You would think it would be the same for the PC, but not the case. The Imaging Edge Desktop is designed to my stable which is why the cable is required I think. Does that help? @@Jason_Hermann Hi Jason, Thanks for the comprehensive reply, not all you tubers are so helpful. I agree its a nightmare but this latest version for the A7M4 seems much better. As a thank you I hope you find this info helpful. Mine is set up to run wirelessly, not cabled, to my Ipad. You can turn off the Ipad wifi tab or switch your router off. Also disable Dropbox if you have problems. You must set PC Remote to OFF and PC Remote Connect Method to WIFI DIRECT on page 40 in Menu, on page 41 set WiFi frequency band to 5G, it's faster than 2.4G. When you power camera on it generates it's own network, join this when asked in Imaging Edge. You can now run wirelessly, the secret is using WiFi Directa. Sending 13 meg Medium jpegs to my 2017 Macbook Pro arrive in 1 to 2 seconds, 2Meg jpegs arrive instantly. 29meg Raws + a 13meg Jpeg arrive in 5 seconds on 5G, 11 seconds on 2.4G. Using the above criteria it works wirelessly to my Macbook Pro, you MUST have PC Remote set to ON this time. The network generated by the camera should be selected on the Macbook, a separate window should open with the Device name 7M4 displayed, click Refresh tab if it does not appear then double click the Device name, it should now connect to the camera. I have just managed to set a hot folder in Lightroom Classic so your image opens up direct in Lightrooms Develop module for processing. Capture One is very similar. A 29 meg Raw + a 13 meg Jpeg open up in lightroom in 11 to 12 seconds, a bit too slow but it works, remember it's all wireless which is great. Any questions, just ask. Regards, Mike in UK

Oh wow that is cool! I did not know you could do that with the Desktop App. I thought you had to use a cable, because I was never able to get it to work wirelessly on the Mac Laptop. I have back-button focus set to my joystick and tried reverting to the original shutter button settings and it never solved the issue of not being able to use autofocus with the app. On top of that, why can't you use bulb mode either? I hate this app so much, it's unreal. 😃

Hi Jason, my r3 used to transfer photos directly to gallery while remote shooting, but somehow r5 just shows preview and nothin appears in gallery any ideas? (Usually low quality previews were sent to gallery )

Im confused. When it gets to 3:30 you simply view and import images… whilst when I select view and import, unlike in your image mine says “Cannot connect to the camera. The camera may not be operated from the app because of other network functions, or the SD card being not inserted.” It’s proving really frustrating. Any advice Jason?

I set up my Sony A7iv with imaging Edge, mainly to transfer GPS information, and go off for a day's shooting. When I get to look at the images at the end of the day I find the first few have GPS information but the rest don't. I suspect this is due to activities on the phone - phone calls, text messages, phone going to sleep etc - causing the connection to the camera to be dropped. Is there any way of ensuring the connection persists whatever is happening with the phone?

Hi Walter, I have not used that feature myself in the field, but from what I understand the phone must be connected. So, if that connection fails it will not work.The only thing I can think of would be to check the phone periodically to make sure it is still connected. Perhaps turn off power saving modes on the phone. I'm thinking evertime you turn the camera off you will need to reconnect to the app.

I wear hearing aids (wirelessly) connected to my phone so that phone conversations play through the aids, and this connection never drops while the phone is on, even automatically connecting when the phone is first switched on at the beginning of the day. So I know continuous connection can be achieved. Why isn't it with the Imaging Edge app? It diminishes the usefulness of the GPS feature if one is having to check the connection every time one wants to take a photo

@@waltergladwin3300 I understand your frustration, and I don't have an exact answer for you, but I think Sony is trying to prevent your phone and camera from going dead. To maintain the connection all the time the camera has to remain on and uses wi-fi plus bluetooth. Not ideal I know....

I got mine to work on my ipad but after i take a shot, it's not giving me a preview like it used to be. No issues with my A7SIII but on my A7IV, preview won't pop-up. what have i done wrong?

Do you have the Auto Review setting On? MENU → (Setup) → [Display Option] → [Auto Review] → desired setting.

Whenever switch between View and import for Remote shooting, need to reconnect the camera again. It’s not convenient. The Canon Connect work better, remain connect to the camera while viewing

I've tried to follows these instructions. It shows the camera is paired via blue tooth, the camera shows up on the imaging app but when i click on "Remote Shooting" i get "Cannot connect to the camera. The camera may not be operated from the app because of other network functions, or the SD card being not inserted" I've deleted it, reinstalled and always the same problem. Great video! *

I am literally shocked and speechless... How could even the most self-defeating bureaucracy create such an abysmal system? It's like Sony has hired the world's best sensor engineers... The world's best hardware designers, including hardware user interface. The world's best mechanical engineers. But then asked Beavis and Butthead to design all wireless communication interfaces. Instead of "Make it more pointy", they must have had some product manager shouting "The user needs more interaction... Add more steps. Oh... also, we want to make sure the user thinks of our app as powerful, so make it use more battery power." That said, I appreciate the video. It's ridiculous that this app needs a video walk-through rather than just being simple, elegant and generally automated or obvious, but it definitely does. So good on ya' for helping Sony's customers work-around the insanity that Sony built.

Try removing the Bluetooth device from the camera and phone/ tablet... Then try re connecting everything would be my advice.

I had already notice this issue with the smartphone setting not connecting but the bluetooth option working. However, I noticed that when filming in 4k, the camera freezes around 4mn into the recording and then there is no way to unstuck it but removing the battery... which delete the file that was recorded before freeze 😳 Very unreliable for me !

Yes it is not reliable enough to use for Pro work, but for sharing photos and doing a quick remote control I find it useful at times... Sorry to hear of your issues!

Is it just me or is this an issue... In camera when I try to preview the image, it disconnects with the app. I also cant see the image gallery, only the last shot image

Dude. Sorry Your video is wrong. Raw doesn’t work. It seems to import the raw file as you demonstrated however when you got view it you get a blacked out box. It says ARW. However you can’t open the photo. Not only that but you can only export jpg from this app. I tried HEIF files they don’t export. Now please don’t take this as me being an arse. Just that I’m frustrated trying to work this shit out. Bloody firmware lags behind. May I request confirming the raw files process? I changed settings as you directed. If I’m wrong I apologise. Either way I appreciate the effort you made.. I totally agree with the app as a great remote control application. It’s really good. Any clarity you could share would be appreciated

Raw works, your tablet just can't read the raw files I'm thinking... You are doing it correctly it sounds like to me.

There is absolutely no issues with the A7SIII using the QR code to pair. Why Sony keep changing that? If there's Sony engineers here or Sony Ambassadors, please have it like the A7SIII. it's the most less pain in the A and the most stable. I have all kids of Sony... Rseries 7 series and &s series... the A7Siii is perfect.
