S5 benefits that grabbed me, especially for video: > Better grip > Has dual card slots > Dual ISO > 4K/60p video > 1.79x better color depth with a better overall color science > 918.4k dots higher resolution (screen) > H.264/MOV 4:2:2 10-Bit video internal! > Anamorphic shooting modes > Slow motion 180fps at 1080p > RAW Video Output

Thanks for the video. It is exactly what I was looking for, since I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Panasonic S5 or the Sony A7c. I like the styling of the A7c better, although that might have something to do with the fact that I owned a Sony a6000 a number of years ago, and it has the same basic form-factor and rangefinder-style ergonomics. I also think the overall image that the Sony produces is nicer - for lack of a better way to describe things, the Sony seems to produce a creamier, richer and smoother image. On the other hand, I don't like the fact that when you plug in an external HDMI monitor on the Sony, you lose access to the camera's display LCD and whatever touch functions it has, including setting focus point. Based on your information, here is how I now think of the two cameras: If you do mostly photography, vlogging or occasional videography where you don't need minute control of all the camera's functions while shooting, then the Sony is your camera. If you do mostly videography and need good control of the camera's operating parameters and good stills photography capabilities are also important to you, then the S5 is your camera. There are three things you didn't touch upon that might be important. First, the S5 offers a 96MP high-res JPEG capture option. Second, in some markets, the S5 with kit lens sells for less than the Sony (In Canada, the S5 is $200 cheaper). Lastly, while the range of native L-mount lenses is limited, you can buy an adapter and use whatever third-party lenses fit the adapter.

excellent pro review. Now for wedding work, considering other people are filming the material: Comparing general Sonys, 6300, 73, the lot, versus a Panasonic G9, the HD on the G9 just eats up the Sonys. And the post processing is much more forgiving. Hands down whatever the Panasonics simply thrash the competition. Image quality is king, and skin tone always better.

Thank you, very useful comparision. I am a Pany boy (M43) but I really like that A7C. The small size is the main reason and FF the other. I will get one next year and use it for low light shooting.
@jockturner1547
@jockturner1547 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I’d suggest looking more into the s5 if your a pany boy. With the systems being so similar from your m4/3 camera, colour science being similar and general design philosophy will make the camera far more easy and simple to swap between the 2. I wouldn’t stress much about the size of the a7C, if you are buying a ff camera for low light, through out the idea of small size. You can’t beat physics, the lenses will be huge either way and the slightly larger size of the s5 will be slight more ergonomic which can actually make it feel lighter. Not to meantion the s5 is also rocking a more recent sensor, from what I’ve heard it handles low light a little better and it also has dual native iso, so you will get cleaner results from the s5. They’re both brilliant cameras but that’s just my 2c

One killer feature on the S5 that doesn't seem to get mentioned a lot is the Dual ISO. I can shoot at up to 6400 ISO in very low light and still get very clean footage. Also the headphone jack is Soooooo worth it. I've been using the Sony cameras for the last two years and when my S5 arrived it's been so nice to have a headphone jack. AF as Shane says is pretty good. Very usable. Colours are amazing on the S5 and V-Log is the full version not V-Log-Light giving 13-14 stops of dynamic range. Also when I use an external monitor I can output the 'on-screen-display' to the external monitor. I love being able to do that as with the Sony I was never sure I was actually recording and missed many a take because of it. With the Panasonic I can have the on screen display on my external monitor and have the border turn red when I'm recording, very helpful and reassuring.

The Panasonic is better in terms of rolling shutter. The only good Sony for rolling shutter is the A7SIII/FX3 (and probably some of the other new models). Edit - Thanks for the correction on the headphone jack. For some reason I totally forgot it had one as it's not near the audio input. 🤣

If you are concerned about rolling shutter then it is Panasonic all day long. It is a Panny strength, just like IBIS. I use both Sony and Panasonic and I find that I am often regretting having taken a Sony out, and the IBIS is a big part of that. I don’t think I every regret having chosen a Panasonic. For me, the user experience is simply better.

about gyroscope: if you use catalyst browse, afaik, shutterspeed has to be at least 200-250, so you cant do cinematic 50 on 25fps. so its kinda useless, dont make the choice based on it if you want close to 50 shutterspeed. thats with catalyst. there is another software you can process the gyro with, called gyroflow, and im not sure if it too has this limitation or not..

Do you feel you have a good handle on the S5’s focus system? I think there’s a video by Luca Bono (not sure I got his name right) about needing to confirm focus tracking by manually tapping the box over the intended subject. I have the Sony A7C. How did you set the picture profile on the Sony camera so it looks more like film rather than live (like the news or a soap opera)?

@@sarajennfunvideos208 That's the no picture profile. I am using Auto White Balance as well. No tricks, I just hit record in Aperture priority mode. :)

I'm glad you mentioned lens selection, it's kind of crucial if you're going for AF. Also, if you plan to do photography as well, Sony is the clear winner...

Well... the S5 is a good stills camera as well (notwithstanding the differences that Shane mentioned in the video).

I have both and i mostly shoot photos on the S5...no anti-aliasing filter, high res modes, great time lapse modes...and my vintage lenses just seem to work better....blasting away in auto everything at 10fps? yeah then the Sony is better.

@@robertwlittlejohn Sure, if you use manual lenses auto focus doesn't matter. I started out using vintage lenses for everything from landscapes to sports, but I appreciate AF when it comes to paid jobs like events and weddings.

@@thomassantoso no the vintage lenses actually look better on the S5...no idea why, maybe the lack of antialias, it's definitely sharper when that's what I'm after. Nothing to do with autofocus as it's fine for stills on the S5, it just doesn't have the burst speed of the A7C. I'd never shoot paid work on the sony as I'm always shooting video as well, unless it's instructional/educational where you can let the AF do the work and 8 bit doesn't matter.

The choice is easy, Lumix S5 all day long. Had both, only have the S5 now. Sony feels like a cheap Chinese knock off, build quality and grip are awful, missing a front control wheel, EVF is a joke, and menus are probably the worst around, you won't enjoy it as a creative joy to use.
