Great video. As usual! Of course, Panasonic is the best. On video Panasonic is the leader. The only problem with that wonderful company is thet they dont know anything about marketing. They dont know how to advertise their excellent products. If Panasonic could use the marketing science effectively, they could have eliminate the competition!

Firstly Shane, as you yourself pointed out, no autofocus system is perfect. It can't be, because it's always guessing what you want. Also, bear in mind that these AF tests on KZfaq always emphasise performance at wide open apertures. This is far from being what you always want for a shot and with a more generous depth of field, the shortcomings of the Panasonic cameras become a lot less noticeable. In almost every case, it's fine for short pieces to camera, which is all I need in that respect. For the rest, there's also single-shot AF and good old manual. As regards the latter, we managed for more than a century of photography with manual focus lenses, and still do in most high end video cameras. The Sony stabilisation is poor out of camera and the Catalyst software is not without its faults, aside from the faff - you have to run pretty high shutter speeds to eliminate the weird gloopiness you sometimes see in the corners. That can mean abandoning the 180-degree rule and movement looking unnatural. I think too many people are quick to prioritise AF performance over other considerations. For me, it's no use having the best focusing in the world if you have to use a gimbal for nearly all your video shooting.

Just upgraded to the GH5M2 from the GH5 and it's virtually a whole new camera rather than an upgrade. Colour science is better with great highlight roll-off. Raw stills are now 14-bit at last. Auto focus is very fast in stills but being brought up on manual, plus Panasonic has great MF aids, I prefer manual in video. Its a bit of a bargin really.

Hey, Shane! Love the video, mate! Glad I found it since I’ve been stuck trying to find an alternative to the GH5m2 due to its reportedly terrible AF and the A7c seemed the best option. My usage would predominantly be for general travel and street photography, 4wding and holiday videos and things where I probably can’t constantly be manually focussing and would need IBIS too. With the last update of the GH5m2 firmware, has the AF gotten any better? What would you recommend between the two cameras for my usage? Again, love the video mate! Thanks! Abs :)

The AF on the GH5M2 works awesome for photos but its not as good as the Sony for video autofocus. The GH5M2 leaves the Sony for dead when it comes to video codecs and capabilities. I thought the image quality from the GH5M2 in this video was quite clearly nicer to the eye minus the background blur. Hope this helps. :)

I had the phone since 2017, as my daily driver and use dit alot charged it once to 4 times in a day I think. So went for Samsung, my sis had s6 which outlasted it, now she has a a52 and I have a a52s. I hope the Sony Cameras won't have ports that wear thst badly. Have you had any experience with Sony cameras in the past, are the ports good? I want a camera with least potential issues as well as perform well and fit me well and not be too big or too small

Yep it SUCKS. I hate subscription services. Just another way you are milked for cash after the fact. I am spending a good portion of time overseas next year and having to stabilize everything in post and downgrade it sucks unless I get a short term subscription. I used the one by one method for my short film going up at the end of this month and it was a huge pain. Plus you end up keeping the old files so everything doubles in size. I am already on the fence about selling these cameras. I am working on my FX3 review now. There's a lot of stuff I've noticed with it that not many people are talking about. My review will be about 70% favorable and 30% brutal. haha

@@GeekyNerdyTechy Yeah - man. No one wants anything but Canon or Sony, so it’s hard having a camera channel talking about Olympus Panasonic or even Black magic. But the truth is, those Penny and Blackmagic cameras are often better to use for everything that doesn’t need autofocus and Olympus kills it in stabilization. It feels like I’m torn - Panasonic and Blackmagic just have more exciting and better to use cameras for real work, but most people on KZfaq are watching because they really use cameras causally (or they want their own KZfaq channel) the Sony’s and Canon’s are more appealing to them. Now for photos - absolutely Sony for me with that awesome dynamic range and focusing system and lens selection

Thanks again, Shane. Still tempted to "trade down" my Panasonic S1 for a GH5 II since the S1 is such a big and heavy camera, and since the ergonomics and battery of a GH5 MK II would go well with those of my Panasonic S5. But then, there is the lens issue, since L Mount lenses won't work on m43 bodies (and vice versa). Plus the S1 has 6K internal. Also, I am not a Sony hater (I have three Sony aps-c cameras), but why are they shooting themselves in the keister by requiring a subscription to Catalyst if you want to batch process files??? And the fact that you are supposed to use faster shutter speeds (and maybe faster frame rates???) to get better stabilization is a bummer.
@GeekyNerdyTechy
@GeekyNerdyTechy 2 жыл бұрын
Those older S1/S1H cameras are huge but the results are pretty great as well. They are too big for outdoor use, but as a studio tool I'm sure they'd be fantastic. One of the major turn off's for me is subscription services especially after you spend $6000 AUD on an FX3 and you get a crippled version of Catalyst. The FX3 has been a great studio tool but I like using it far less than the GH5II, it's crazy! 😆 The GH52 has been a great little camera. AF is good enough for most situations but it very heavily relies on the lens choice for better AF. The S5 with the Kit lens is also a fantastic option for AF and portability.
@marinrealestatephotography
@marinrealestatephotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks for the reply. I guess the reason I kept the S1 is for the 6K internal and the unlimited 4K 10-bit recording, which I thought would be good for long interviews or wedding ceremonies for the ability to crop in post... but 6K is limited to only 15 minutes and 4:2:0 so maybe it won't be as much of a benefit as I had hoped.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy I feel like the S5 gets largely glossed over, like "Oh I want a gh5 with all great video features but guess I gotta go sony or canon because I need full frame." While the S5 is basically just a full frame gh5 sitting right there. Don't get me wrong the gh5 as a camera punches well above it's weight class and the Sony is a great camera too, just kinda feel like the S5 almost gives you the best of both worlds, granted there's no scenario here were you don't lose a little of an edge for any of the cameras involved.

It depends on the lens. The S5 is really great with the kit lens. It's right up there as one of the best combinations I've used. The GH5II has great AF with some lenses and some do struggle a bit but if you get the ones with the recently updated firmware it works really well. Hi Shane, awesome video as always. Now with the upcoming A7 IV it will be even more difficult to decide which one to get. There's one big problem with Lumix system, which almost nobody talks about - lenses. There has been some awesome lenses for E-mount from 3rd party manufacturers like Sigma or Tamron, but basically nothing for m4/3 system except for some manual ones. We had only 2 new lenses for micro 4/3 in last couple of years with a stupid high price tag (10-25 and 25-50). I've been using m43 system for video since 2018, but I'm thinking about switching to Sony every day - I'm just waiting for GH6 annoucement and if it will be worth getting it. Anyway, keep on doing good work mate. Cheers.

Thanks for the kind words, mate. Agreed but there is a lot of lenses available for MFT, just not a lot of new ones. It would be great to see some new versions of their older ones that have a better AF motor but I don't know if that'll ever happen. I found since they started updating firmware on some of the older lenses the AF is a bit better but some of them will never be as good as the Linear motors in the Sony cameras. For some reason though, the 20-60mm Kit on the S5 (in this video) worked amazing so it must be because it's a new lens. I can't wait to see the Gh6 but my gut is the AF will be about as good as the S5 which is very good.

I have micro four thirds cameras and I don't recognize this lens problem you are talking about. Besides Panny there are Olympus and of course third party like Sigma e.g. And there are the occasional updates. True that some of Panasonic's newer zooms are more costly but on the other hand most MFT lenses are cheaper than most APS-C and small format sensor camera (what many call full frame) lenses.
@RZExperience
@RZExperience 2 жыл бұрын
@@joestrahl6980 Well for example there's no fast zoom from sigma or tamron for micro 4/3, but there's for Sony E and FE (Fullframe and APS-C). Next about the fast primes - I know that Sigma 16,30 and 56 are available for m43, but because of the 2x crop factor those lenses are not that usable with mft bodies, since they're designed for that crop. Last but not least - Olympus lenses have awesome optical performance, but AF combined with lumix body is much worse than with lumix lenses (and thats not something that you want,especially for the price). I have 12-35 f2.8 and I would love some kind of faster zoom (maybe f2) but only option besides that is 10-25 f1.7 and that's just stupid expenisve - you can buy Sigma art zoom for fullframe (Sony E or Panasonic L-mount) for cheaper and those lenses are just pure joy.

The biggest flaw in the GH series is you can't punch in to check focus while recording, something Sony has offered for at least 5 years. This is such an important feature for any kind of professional work, especially when the AF is not 100% reliable, so you're stuck with constantly stopping and starting or using an external monitor. If the GH6 doesn't offer this, I'll be leaving the good ship Lumix.

@@IsaacRayMusicChannel you can adjust focus while recording. What you can't do is magnify the focus area while recording to check you're nailing focus. The GH6 can do this, the GH5 series can't. If you're shooting any kind of event, you need to make sure focus is correct during long static shots. On the GH5 you either stop, check focus, restart, or use a monitor for accuracy. The Sony is clunky and frustrating to use for anything other than the AF and lower light. The GH5 is by far the better camera for everything else. As someone who has both Sony and Panasonic gear (G9) the Lumix is generally the more useful camera and the Lumix feature set means that I tend to find the Sony frustrating in comparison. However, there is one big thing that is not mentioned in the video - the Lumix is actually fun to use, while Sony has never quite nailed the fun thing. The fun comes from a combination of feel in the hand, feature set, customization, menu organization, and dials I am considering buying the GH5 M2. Unless the GH6 pulls a rabbit out of the hat, I suspect the GH5 M2 will be plenty enough for me for the next few years.

If viewfinder would be on the center, your still be hitting the camera, but in the place of jog dial. And as jog dial is raised a bit, it would be even worse. And far worse considering that you flip out the screen, so there will be more room for you nose. While moving it to center will make it worse for everyone. For both left-eyed and right-eyed.

Excellent review, Shane. It's stressful to use the GH5's autofocus. I'm waiting for the launch of the GH6. Hope it solves the focus problem, otherwise I'm going to go with a Sony camera.

The GH5 has very problematic AF, but the G9 has excellent AF and the GH5 M2 is better again. I have both Sony and Panasonic, and the G9 gets shots hand at night that is just a shaky mess on the Sony. When you factor in stabilization and the rest of the feature set, plus usable AF on the latest Panasonic bodies then the balance swings back to Panasonic.

using 2x gh5 + gh5mii (latest firmware) on gimbal for weddings , etc. Shot around 30 jobs already. GH5MII is far better camera in terms of everything, including AF,screen, but still far behind sony, tested with 12mm f1,4 (can just go blurry on a group shot) ,15mm f1,7 struggles almost the same way as on gh5m1. stiil want to test it with sigma 56 f1,4. Just don't have time. Livestream is a new cool feature, but you cannot record it internally.

@@niltons.spagnuolo The GH5 is much better than at launch but is still not trustworthy. The GH5 M2, on the other hand has very usable AF. While I cannot agree with Vincent's arrogant comment about "real videographers" not using AF because that attitude comes from the luxury of the old idea of working in a crew and the videographer always being behind the camera, and not accounting for today's one-man videography where you need to set and forget a camera and rely on it working without user input, he does have a point. Not only is the GH5 M2 have very good AF, there is a lot to be gained from fine tuning camera parameters. I am a one-man operation and get excellent AF results from the latest Panasonic bodies. While Panasonic takes more effort to get the results, the poor stabilization on Sony bodies is the thing I find most frustrating about Sony. I like hand held work and that is where MFT really shines. That and the lack of video features compared to Panasonic. There is no perfect camera, and focussing just on AF ignores the many limitation in the Sony world. I shoot both Sony and Lumix/Olympus, and the cameras that I enjoy the most are Panasonic, mostly because of the excellent video oriented feature set and superb stabilization.

The GH5 has way better colors and the image looks better. Full frame doesn’t mean anything to me. I have a A7SIII, A7III and GH5. I like the GH5 image because it has a film look. It is more of my artsy camera. My Sony cameras I would use for commercial work.

Low light, compact size, far more robust for photos with great dynamic range and high iso and affordable fast glass makes the A7c a more mainstream and convenient option. The AF is a BIG DEAL, it'll make the whole process slow, imaging vlogging and constantly having to check on the AF, especially while zooming in and out. Also those fast lenses for MFT is super expensive, whereas you can get Samyang AF primes/Sigma AF primes for very cheap with the E-Mount. 10 bit and all is great, but the overall experience is more clunky. If Panasonic doesn't improve on this aspect, they DEAD.
