Chelsea & I take the a7R II to Peru and pit it against the Canon 5DS-R. We've also spent the last 7 weeks using it as our primary 4k video camera. In this video, we'll tell you exactly who the a7R II is right for, and who might be happier with a different camera body.

Thank you as always.. for this fantastic video... I am holding off on the Sony lineup, but am definitely watching them. Sticking with the D5 for now, but I would be negligent if I didn't pay attention... I'll be looking hard at Sony when I am up for a new body. Thank you you two! Always GREAT and informative videos! The low light hunting focus is something I just couldn't see myself dealing with for now.... I also appreciated your discussion about the zoom lens problems.

Tony, I agree with your assessment about the A7R2 being a great landscape lens with primes and even more so with the new Loxia and Batis lenses, however are you still arguing for adapted Canon lenses for zoom quality now that Sony has the G Master series in 2.8?

Thanks for getting this follow-up video out. This totally nails it. Last week I gave up on my 2nd A7R II in the last month. My 5DSR arrived yesterday and I'm happy as can be, love it. Detail and IQ spectacular and they're all in focus. Ditto EVERYTHING you said in this review. Not having any desire to shoot video made the choice even easier. Plus now I have two 5D versions with near identical settings and controls. Shot an event today with a 400 on the 5D3 and 70-200 on the 5DSR. Did not have to think about anything but when to press the shutter.

Thanks for the up front summary! That is incredibly respectful of the viewer - and unprecedented on the internet, as far as I can tell. Important point that I think you overlooked because of the nature of your shoot: face recognition and eye autofocus. I find that the face recognition even just on my Sony a6000 is far better than that of my (beloved!) Nikon D750, and from what I've heard, the A7RII ramps this up with superb eye autofocus as well (if you can find it in the menus and map it to a button). Then add in TRACKING of face/eye.... The face recognition and eye autofocus, along with tracking, have the potential to be a game changer in terms of photographing people in general and children especially. Downside will be - I suspect - that it falters in less than ideal light. Perhaps you alluded to this when you discussed using AFC that worked "80% of the time". But I could see myself grabbing the A7RII over a FF Nikon or Canon for photographing people, provided, as you suggest, that I can use fast primes in the situation. BTW I'm thrilled that you discovered the Sigma 24-105mm F/4. That lens lives on my D750 when wide primes are not ideal. Very sharp with beautiful character. Truly a gift.

+waipahutube We tested this in our earlier reviews, but we used *all* the focusing modes, and then selected the mode with the best results. I recall that face detection didn't impact the results. The a7R II did really good in that test (with native lenses).

Great videos as always... Question please.. On the clip, between 1'49" and 2', I don't understand the difference between the right and left of the screen.. Are they both shot with the Sony? Or are you comparing Sony to Canon? And if they're both shot with the Sony, then what accounts for the dramatic difference (all washed out vs saturated colors) between the two? Thank you in advance for the clarification..

People keep on saying how there is room for a extra sd card slot but that can't be certain. Just because on the outside it has room doesn't mean it does on the inside. It may have to be made even BIGGER. I know it's not perfect and it has it's cons. That being said it offers quite a bit. They also sent it out in short time. I just hate when people say "Pro's wouldn't use it because..." That's a load of crap, there are many pros who use the a7 series right now. Not everyone shoot's weddings and sports. The thing that bugs me is no usb 3.0. Otherwise it's a pretty damn good camera.
@kingalias
@kingalias 8 жыл бұрын
+skatertwig26 Insert the word "some" in front of pros and you've fixed your problem. Tony isn't far off, I've heard many photographers say they enjoy two slots. They use it for duplication, or RAW to one and JPEG to the other.
@skatertwig26
@skatertwig26 8 жыл бұрын
kingalias I agree for "some pro's. I worded it like that because many reviews say "Pro's wouldn't have it because". Not some pro's, which I think is bull. I would love 2 SD card slots but it could lead to larger camera which people will complain about then haha I personally would take a slightly larger camera for better battery life and a second sd card slot.
@kingalias
@kingalias 8 жыл бұрын
+skatertwig26 yeah, it seems the message of why to switch to Sony/mirrorless is changing a bit. At first it was about saving size and weight, but now it's shifting to the "tech" of mirrorless. I think people are finally realizing that physic are, well, physics lol. If you want fast, full-frame lenses, then you're going to have to have a big lens (zeiss 35/1.4). If you want better ergonomics and room for more cards and bigger batteries, then you'll need a bigger camera. If you want to save size, then you're probably better off going with the Fuji system.
@Noparticularcontext
@Noparticularcontext 8 жыл бұрын
Your right, I stripped my a7r and there wasn't any room left inside that, the a7r ii is slightly bigger to accommodate that ibis. It wouldn't matter if the camera had two card slots, bigger batteries and made you a brew in the morning some people still wouldn't like the smell of it. It's a camera and for those one or two negatives the pros far out weigh them.
@skatertwig26

kingalias Right, it depends on your needs and what you shoot. No one can say that one thing is simply better. One of the biggest reason's I stick with Sony is the EVF and their sensors. I could not use a optical, I hate them now.

Regarding the focus issues at 3:30, which focus mode were you in? For me to change focus points on the A6000 is very easy. (depending on the mode). If I am in single point large, I press the middle button (of the wheel) , move the point around, and hit the button again. I dont own the A7RII. Is this not a feature on that camera?
@kingalias
@kingalias 8 жыл бұрын
+The Post Color Blog (Dave's Tuts) Judging from the video, it is a feature, however, I think he's saying it just works faster with DSLRs b/c they have controls dedicated to solely moving the AF points. So instead of hitting a button, moving it around and hitting the button again, you just move the joystick/rocker and shoot - no need to engage, move, disengage.

Tony and Chelsea, I love your channel and you both do such a great job! I have a question regarding the latest Sony mirrorless offerings. I'm a long time canon shooter and I do mostly portrait, event and wedding photography. I love what I see with the Sony A7rII so far but I'm concerned about compatibility with all of the third party speedlites, triggers, studio lights, etc. Sony has a reputation for making all of their products strictly proprietary and I'd like to know if I can quite literally pick up A7rII in store today and have it work with my Yongnuo and Pocket Wizard triggers? Or even Canon/Yongnuo speedlites? What's your take on this? I'd hate to have to transition into Sony and the mirrorless world and then find out I am limited in my lighting options. And one other question: I know this camera only has a single card slot. I'd be worried about not have a backup slot for professional/paid shoots. What is your experience with card failures in the past? Maybe you two can do a video regarding data redundancy or backup options to hedge against data lost from card failure! (Just an idea) Thanks in advance, I appreciate the great work you both do!

Is there any way to adjust the exposure while the (back button) focus is pressed? I can't seem to find a way to scroll the shutter wheel or anything while in focus. This is helpful in continuous focus for moving subjects changing from a dark scene to a bright one or vice versa. Apparently you can't do this with the a7rii and you can only dial your exposure without focusing. I hope I'm wrong.

@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 8 жыл бұрын
+liam nikosigmani I shot that panorama with the a7R II and the Canon 16-35 f/4. For that shot, the Sony's dynamic range really helped. Re: the weight and size, notsomuch, because I ended up using Canon lenses and an adapter, so the difference was minimal. The EVF is really fantastic for that type of work, though, because it lets you get the perfect exposure without chimping and re-shooting.

what type of video work are you doing? are your clips long or shorter? I assume you dont do interviews or such? thanks for the video!
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 8 жыл бұрын
+Kaos Sushi The short clips definitely aren't a problem, but we frequently run against the 30-minute time limit when recording tutorials. The heat warning came on once, but Justin had forgotten to tilt the screen out. He tilted it out and we kept recording and it was fine. I can't promise it won't be a problem for others, all I can do is share my own experience with it.

Nice video ! A battery grip is a great idea imo, not only it doubles the battery life but it gives more grip when holding bigger lenses. The a7rii can be tiny for some people. It's good to have a choice I think.

Tony, the a7rii might even be a better option for video than the a7sii as its got better focus system and from what ive seen the high isos of it are quite decent as it seems quite clean up to 12800 isos. Just a thought!

If you guys could please answer my question it would be of amazing help. How are you supposed to work with the ARW files that come out of Sony cameras??? I use Canon, and editing the CR2 files is as easy as double clicking them. Buy my computer doesn't open ARW files on Photoshop or Lightroom. My A7Rii is my first ever Sony Camera, so if you could shed some light onto this question that would be amazing. Thanks! -Anthony

At time stamp 2:47 you compared the Sony 24-70 f/4 to the Sigma 24-105 f/4, Sigma being the sharpest by 50%, which mount was the Sigma & what adapter were you using? So many adapters to choose from, you get what you pay for & want to purchase the best. Love your videos btw, very direct, informative, & to the point.

Actually check out the Olympus E-M1 II (sdp.io/em1ii) and its high-res mode. It's the best. I discuss it a bit here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8t8itap0rmtgHU.html

Tony, I have one really important question, I am going to Bangkok Photo Fair to buy a A7R2. Will the FE PZ 28-135 work as my still zoom? I am happy to buy any other prime FE that I might need for street stills etc. I dont care about weight or $$ as I was looking at the G70-200F4 & thinking I have to hump that thing around when most of what I do will be below 135 in stills & video.. What do you think? & Cheers from Thailand, Ed
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 8 жыл бұрын
+Ed Smith We'll be posting a review in a week or so... but I already know the results. The 28-135 (sdp.io/s28135) is FAR less sharp than the Sigma 24-105 (sdp.io/s105). For us, we're using the Sigma 24-105 with the Metabones Mk IV and getting much better results.

Hi. I have bought this camera on release with 50mm f1.8 and 90mm macro. So far I'm in love with this camera and I have no reason to complaining maybe except battery live. I would like to start shooting night sky and milky way but I have really bad time to choose lens for it. What would be best possible choice in price range in about 2000$ (it can be with adapter, and manual focus)

+Lukasz Pawlak I prefer the sdp.io/r24. It's wildly popular for astrophotography. You can spend more, but you won't get better results. If you need other focal lengths, check out the other Rokinon lenses.

Tony, I recently came back from Costa Rica where I brought the A7Rii and the Sigma 24-105 F4 OS with the Metabones IV T - everything with latest software. I have used many of my favourite Canon L lenses and never had a problem (almost never) but the Sigma 24-105 / Metabones / A7Rii keep falling into MF mode because the F-Stop information stopped being passed to from lens trough adapter to camera - I had to constantly, and I mean constantly, dis-attach lens and then re-attach it - over and over and over again. I know you guys own the Sigma lens - have you had this problem? Many thanks. Paul

+Paul O'Neil I could never get the Metabones IV adapter to connect with the A7R2. I sent it back. Found out later from my local camera store that they stopped carrying them because of so many returns. I picked up the Fotodiox -- doesn't have what Metabones promised to have, but it works every time.
