Similarities:
* Sony E-mount and full-frame CMOS sensor
* 14-bit RAW (compressed and uncompressed options)
* dust and moisture resistant magnesium alloy body
* OLED electronic viewfinder with 2,360k dots and 0.78x magnification
* 5-axis in-body stabilisation (4.5EV for A7r II vs 5EV for A7 III)
* 4K video at 30fps in both full frame and crop mode
* WiFi and NFC connectivity
* They both have the ability to run off battery packs.
Sony A7iii: amzn.to/2Wdttsy
Sony A7rii: amzn.to/2G34PWa
Differences:
1. Battery size and longevity the a7iii is so much better…..I have two batteries for it and rarely use the second one except on really long shoot days. I have 6 batteries for the a7rii…….6………
2. Megapixels - this is the actual size difference when it comes to printing out …… this is an a3 template and you can see the size of the a7iii image size and then this is the a7rii file size (show size on an a3 image in photoshop) 24mp vs 42mp
3. Crop ability with the a7rii being better in crop mode
4. Menus better in a7iii but still huge and easily forgettable….there are a lot of functions, and they have to give them to you one way or another….both cameras are very customisable though, and between the custom buttons and the function menu, you should have easy access to everything you need.
5. Autofocus better in a7iii especially if you shoot with an adapter. On native lenses, the a7rii is really good, but noticeable better on the a7iii….its just basically a newer upgraded system. 693 vs 399 focussing points
6. DR A7iii 15 stops A7rii 13.9 but The difference is minimal
7. Shooting speeds A7rii max of 5fps, a7iii maximum of 10fps with AE/AF tracking. Up to 8fps, it is possible to have live view with blackouts.
8. Buffer speeds - In a burst at full speed, the A7 III can take a maximum of 177 JPG frames or 89 uncompressed RAW frames. The A7r II can only manage a maximum of 24 JPGs or 9 uncompressed RAW files. The A7rii files are considerably bigger though.
9. A7rii you have to wait for the files to be written to the SD card, In the A7iii, he function buttons, playback mode and menu system all remain accessible even while files are being written.
10. The monitor - The resolution, which is higher on the A7r II model (921K vs 1228K).
11. The A7iii has the touch function, so you can move the focussing point to where you want it to quickly with the A7iii….
12. The A7iii has a joystick….which I wish was customisable…..only the push button function is and not the directions.
13. The A7iii has 3 different covers which seem to get in the way, whereas the a7rii only has 2.
14. File sizes are vastly different. If you shoot uncompressed raw files, the a7iii will be about 40Mb and the a7rii will be 80Mp. For compressed raw files halve that and if you shoot jpegs…..just stop the video now, go and change to RAW and come back…..I can wait……If you go for the A7rii your computer may struggle unless its an editing beast!! I have the MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16gb ram and it is noticeable slower with the A7rii 42Mpixl images especially when editing thousands of shots at a time.
15. A7iii 650g. 127 x 96 x 74 mm. A7rii 625g. 127 x 96 x 60 mm
16. The a7rii has one memory card slot where as the a7iii has two.

Great video Mike! I’m coming over from the micro 4/3 world, so either way there will be noticeable changes for me. But I am doing mainly studio work, headshot, fashion and glamour. From the sound of it I think I would benefit from the larger sensor of the AR2, for photography. Would you agree?

It depends on how quickly you shoot. If you’re slow and controlled, then the rii would be perfect. If you fire through lots of shots and run fast paced high energy shoots, the a7iii might be better. Do you have any camera hire shops near you so you could try them both?

Great video and thanks for the raw files. It was the RAW files that made the difference for me. Even though the files on the A7Rii are larger, when cropped in, the details on the A7iii were clearer at high ISO's. Even at ISO 800, there was a noticeable difference. I'm more into astrophotography and low light landscapes where high ISO's are common and I think the A7iii would be a better fit for me. Thanks again.

Hey Mike! Thanks so much for the detailed review, yet I STILL can't decide. The 42MP is appealing, but don't know if it is really necessary for me. I do mostly astrophotography (including 4k videos of the moon because I love being able to crop in 50%) and travel/landscape photo and video. It seems like the a7iii would be better for travel videos because of the more advanced autofocus, but I am also going to get a GoPro Hero7, so would honestly probably use that most for travel videos. I just can't decide!
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say you've already made your mind up! 😁 If you're not sure if you will need 42mp or not, chances are you won't. The a7iii is a fantastic camera and like you say, the autofocus is great..especially with the new firmware 3.0 update. The batteries are fantastic, I only have 2 for the a7iii whereas I have about 6 for the a7rii. I also almost exclusively film with the a7iii over the a7rii as it is a much better camera for video...the experience is just simpler and I can get the shot quicker. That's my extra 2 cents anyway!! I hope that helps!!

I'm just a hobbyist and I mostly like to take portraits and dog photos stuff like that not too many sports photos so I think I'm going to keep my a7r II and maybe later on when the price goes down go for the a7iii thank you for your time I really appreciate it.

No worries Philip, I’m glad the video helped. The biggest difference is the battery really....that’s the only thing I notice on a day to day basis....the other issues are more kind of annoyances that pop up every now and then.....I still keep reaching for my a7rii and I’m sure it’ll be good for years to come! I’m waiting for the price of the a7riii to come down....once it’s a lot cheaper I may consider upgrading, but like you, I’m happy with my a7rii! 👍

Mike, thanks so much for the video! I looking to upgrade from an A6000 so I'm sure either would be a great camera upgrade. I typically like to shoot scenic or landscape images with occasional portraits all non profossional it's all a fun hobby for me. I have been using a lot of vintage lenses and like to focus myself usually. I currently only have the Sony 35mm 1.8 and Sigma 16mm 1.4 with auto focus. My main reason for looking at the full frame is to regain the full frame capabilities of the vintage lenses. The only draw backs for me that I saw for the A7rii were the battery life and low light capability compared to the A7iii. Also the two slots for memory card. What are your thoughts? Thanks again!

Definitely Nicolas, One of my friends has the canon 600d and has had it for years and his photographs are amazing! The newer cameras jut make the process more efficient.....when you know how to use them properly. On professional portrait shoots eye af is amazing and it gives a much higher percentage of useable images, although if it came to it, I’d still be happy using my old film camera from back in the 90s! 😆 It’s all about what’s 6 inches behind the camera! 👍

Hey Davey!! It’s a pretty amazing bit of kit isn’t it! That is one thing I haven’t done yet....I’m trying to get to shoot a sporting event here in December but I haven’t got my press pass yet....if I get in, I’ll definitely make a video on it. 👍it’s so frustrating when the lighting hasn’t been balanced! I shot a wedding video in a castle a few years ago and it had a green tint to the lights coming up from the floor and then bright red heating lamps in the ceiling.....colour balancing was quite an issue with that one so I know your pain!

Hey Mike! I have loved your video! But i'm stil in doubt! Is it an option to use the a7rii in crop to limit the file size if needed and use chaper g master lenses too for general shooting and keeping the larger file sizes and megapixel for portraits? Do you think that would be a shame? Even if its cropped there will be plenty of resolution!
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question and a good point. I use my A7rii when shooting real estate in crop mode with the 10-18mm at 10mm. The file sizes are still over 20mp and the quality is good enough for the real estate agents and companies I do that type of work for. I then switch to the 55mm prime and full frame mode for portraits. The crop mode has plenty of resolution and the images are really useable. 👍

This is a terrific video, thank you! You mention that one can use the touchscreen to focus on the a7iii - is this the case for the a7rii? I shoot real estate photography and pet portraits, mostly, along with some video and landscapes. I’ve been leaning towards the a7rii but I’m worried about the slower focusing with animals who don’t always like to sit still! Or maybe I’m just overthinking this...
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
So the touch screen is only on the A7iii...and all it does is move the focusing square, you have to press the focusing button to activate it...i wish they would make it activate focus on touch. Shooting animals does have its challenges doesn't it!! I used to have a dog and he was my muse a while ago, he taught me a lot about getting the shot before missing the moment as well! 😂... so I know what you mean. 👍 Focusing in the photography mode in the a7rii is still pretty quick...the only thing you'd be missing is animal eye af, which is now a feature in the A7iii. Have you looked at the a7riii? That's coming down in price now.

Thanks very much! I'd say get the A7iii. If you want to do weddings, you want to be focussing on the craziness happening around you, and not worrying about how much battery power you have. And to do weddings seriously, you should look at getting two bodies and two lenses. If you have one with a 16-35mm and the second with a 70-200mm (and a 24-70mm in a bag), you'll pretty much have every focal length you'll ever need and you'll be able to switch from super wide to telephoto in an instant. Hi there! This was the perfect video for me as I needed to compare these two cameras as I need an upgrade. I currently shoot with the canon 5diii and it is really showing its age, especially in low light. The question I would like to ask is which camera would you recommend. I will be moving over from canon and will be using canon lenses, so I initially thought the a7iii would be best, however I mainly shoot landscapes and could really benefit from the greater megapixel count. Which would you say is the better option overall? I still feel that the a7iii is the better choice but just wish I could afford the a7riii and have all the above. Thanks in advance.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Simeon, I'm glad my video has helped! Id still say go for the A7iii. It works much better with the Canon lenses and you can then slowly change your lenses over if you feel the need to. Just make sure you get the mc-11 sigma adapter as that seems to be the best and most reliable. As for the megapixels, if you've come from the 5diii, the A7iii will give you a very similar sized image. I hope that helps 👍

@@mikesphotography I think I will buy the R model but I will have to see how much the price difference is at used market. The thing is that 43Mp gives more flexibility with lenses as you can crop better. Lenses are still very expensive in camera world and this will unlikely never change. I am even considering to start with 16-35mm lens because you can stretch the upper end to about 51mm equivalent when just switching to APS-C mode.(although size of the image goes from 42 -> 18 Mp)

I'd avoid the a7rii if you rely on autofocusing with third party lenses. I did a couple of corporate photoshoots with the Canon 70-200 f2.8 mkii and the sigma MC-11 and it was hard work ... Honestly one of the best comparison videos I've seen. I have the A7r2 and was thinking of selling it to get the A73. I shoot everything really from cars to portraits and wanted a faster burst rate as I've missed a few shots due to the slower burst rate on the R2 also the focusing system is better on the A73 as it has eye auto focus for animals which I know I will use. I also hate the large Raw files and rubbish batteries on the R2. I have also read that the low light performance is better on the A73. However, I love the photos that come out of the A72 they are so crisp and detailed and like being able to crop them a bit more freely (still 40mb though). Are the A73's noticeably different or is it only if I was to print massive pictures out? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Thanks so much Robert! The Rii does produce great images doesn't it. The only difference I've noticed since getting rid of my A7Rii is the ability to crop in as much when needed, apart from that, the A7iii is so much better with all the things you mentioned from better file sizes to the soooo much more practical Z battery. When I had both, as soon as I shot with the A7iii, I wanted to trade my A7rii in for the A7riii...but couldn't afford it... I've now sold the A7rii and don't miss it. I still print A2 and A1 images from the A7iii and they look fantastic. Thanks for watching 😁👍

No worries, I'm glad I could help. I haven't had any experience with the nikon lenses and the sony cameras yet. The A7rii doesn't work so well with adapted lenses whereas the A7iii does work much better. I ended up selling my canon lenses and getting sony native lenses because of this, before I got the A7iii. I think the weather sealing and durability are very similar with these two. For landscapes and portraits, I do tend to reach for the A7rii, but the battery life is pretty awful...I am getting closer to upgrading and now with the a7riv being released, the A7riii has come down in price so if you can stretch the budget, it might be worth going for that one instead. When I arrive home and put my sd card into my 5k iMac, the photos from a 42 mp Sony illuminated sensor is simply amazing and the possibility to having 18,5 mp files in APS-C mode can be enough reason for me to prioritize A7R2 against A7III. Thanks for your honest opinion. I recently bought, second hand, the A7Rii as it is such a bargain it can't be passed along. Also, its bigger pixel count allows using of E mount (APS-C) lenses in crop mode, still leaving enough for editing. My question is about the extra 1EV in dynamic range, the A7iii provides and how much of a difference it makes for landscape photography, over the advantage of the larger pixel count the A7rii gives for same application. Thanks

@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Felice! The extra megapixel count definitely helps, and having the aps-c mode with 20megapixels is a big bonus....almost like having two cameras in one! I haven’t really noticed the increase in DR. I just bracket my shots when needed and that puts the dynamic range through the roof on either camera! I have found myself grabbing the a7rii more and more these days, especially for landscapes.

Thanks for the question...it really is up to you. They are all great cameras and it would be a fantastic upgrade whichever camera you pick. I haven’t had much experience with the EOS R cameras but from what I hear, it is like the 5div without the mirror. Your 70-200mm will work best on the eos r but you will need an adapter. So you’ll have to adapt the lenses regardless. Will the 18-50mm cover full frame or is that a crop sensor lens? Personally, I’d go with the Sony a7iii. They have much more experience with mirrorless cameras and canon is playing catch-up. The low light capabilities are great and also the Sony sensors are iso invariant whereas the canon sensors are not. Check out this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMeFlZiD2M6sdZs.html I only used the 1200d as an example in that video but the full frame canon sensors are similar. The only downside is that Sony lenses are expensive... I hope that helps. 👍

With your a6000 lenses, I think the a7rii would be a good full frame camera to get. You can still shoot 18mp images in crop mode and when you get some full frame lenses you’ll get the huge 42mp images which would be great for food and portrait images. When I go travelling I do take my a7rii over the a7iii for those very reasons. I have the 10-18mm which is my compact wide angle and then the higher mp count is great for landscapes and having the option of cropping in.

What camera would you recommend shooting real estate with? I shoot mainly landscape and astrophotography. I have a Nikon D850 for my sports and wildlife and love the resolution that camera has. But I’m looking for a Smaller camera to shoot real estate work with.

It all depends on the final use of the photos. I've used the sony a6000 and the 10-18mm successfully for online images. When bracketed and stacked, it can give a really good dynamic range. Other times I'll use the A7rii and the 16-35mm f4. This is a little smaller than the D850 but only by a small amount. I hope that helps. 😀👍

They’d both be great for that. If you want higher megapixels, go for the a7rii, if you need a fraction better low light and great battery life, go for the a7iii...to be honest you wouldn’t go far wrong with either camera.

@@mikesphotography thanks mike im kinda leaning towards the a7iii because like you said its better all around. 2 questions.. do you really think the extra megapixel makes a difference? And what's a good lens to start with for night cityscapes
@mikesphotography

The extra megapixel doesn’t really make that much difference. I’ve printed images from both cameras and they’ve come out great. 👍

And for a lens for night cityscapes...I have the batis 25mm which is fantastic quality...if you need wider, I’d suggest the 15mm Laowa. If you’re on a budget, the 14mm samyang is good.

Hey Mike, I'm actually deciding between the a7ii and a7rii (for budget reasons). I was wondering which one to get? I would primarily use it for landscape photography and maybe in the future some wildlife. It's gonna be my travel camera when the world is going back to normal and I can finally backpack again. I found the a7ii + 28-70 kit lens for 1100$ and a7rii body for 1350$ So I'm wondering if it's worth it? Also, I'm deciding between the sony 16-35 f/4 and sony 24-105 f/4 any advice there? I like the wide-angle for landscape but I also like zooming in more to make the background bigger... with the a7ii I can use the kit lens for the extra mm if I go for the 16-35 but with the a7rii + 24-105 it would be better if I come across some amazing wildlife.. decisions decisions...
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, Haha!! The perils of photography shopping...there are always so many choices to make with all the kit that is available out there...so I feel your pain! I'd say go for the A7rii and the 24-105mm. This will give you more reach at the long end and with those extra megapixels, you can crop in on your shot and still have plenty of resolution to spare...so even closer on wildlife. Then for landscapes, the A7rii is such a great camera...loads of resolution and detail. I hope that helps and thanks for watching. 👍

I've got an honest question. Why would one use the 35mm mode if it can later be cropped in post ? Or is it really more for videos?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Good question Randy! I’ve used it for a few jobs where they just had the need for online images.... and 20 megapixels was more than enough. And yes, it is a great function for video. I often use it for Marco shots in these videos and also all of the talking pieces to camera have been filmed in crop mode with the 25mm batis. 👍 It’s just a nice function to have really.

Excellent video, I just subscribed. So here is my dilemma I have an A6000 with a number of nice lenses. The new sony apsc cameras are not a significant advantage for me. Most things I shoot are slow or don't move at all; but I do use available light indoors a lot. If they came out with an advanced sensor (bsi) apsc with a front control dial and a large viewfinder ( I wear glasses) I would go for that, but I don't see that happening soon. My question is would I notice a large difference between the 18 mp crop mode on the a7rii and my 6000. Eventually I can see buying some full frame lenses and I can adapt some old olympus glass (not as old as me though;-). Any suggestions on other alternatives?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Now that is a good question...I think the crop mode on the a7rii and your a6000 would be very similar. I have shot many real estate photos with the crop mode and the 10-18mm, and the companies I worked for have been more than happy with the results. It might be a good way of you getting into full frame gradually without the need to buy full frame lenses right away. You'd also have the advantage of IBIS and if you ever shoot video, 4k options. I hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching, commenting and subscribing, much appreciated.

Hey Mike, I'm looking at upgrading from my Sony A6000 to an A7R II. I shoot photos primarily so video is not really a concern of mine. I mostly shoot portraits, landscape, and cars (both rolling and stills) but I rarely go over the medium shooting speed on the a6000 which I'm guessing is around 7 or 8 shots per second. I have also been able to find the A7R II for around $800 to $900 USD which is very affordable. I guess my only real concern is if the A7R II will be able to keep up with new tech because I wouldn't be upgrading for a few years.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 жыл бұрын
If you're used to the a6000, the a7rii will be very familiar to you. The frame rate in the fast mode is at about 5 shots per second so that would be a bit slower, but you would see quite an increase in quality and in the ability to crop in and getting closer in lightroom to check the focus and details. I still use my a7rii today, especially for portraits and landscape and I think it'll be still good in years to come. You could compare it to the new tech but if you look at the images it can produce, I think it would be hard to tell the difference. 👍

Hi Mike! amazing video thanks so much! Im still confusing about the RII or 7III. I will use it for underwater photography (caves, open ocean, portraits) and Im worry about the battery life, because I will used for photo and video. I was ready to buy the 7iii but Price of 7rii is lower now . so...still confused! I will used it with the Sony 16-35mm f4 lense. What do you think??? thanks so mucho for your help.

No worries, how long would you normally be underwater for? The A7rii does eat through batteries, especially with video so if this is a concern, I'd get the A7iii, that thing seems to last for ages! Thanks for watching. 😁👍
