Zebras set at 109 is a recipe for clipped highlites. I am a TV Producer for 40 years and all our professional cameramen set zebras at 85-90% to protect highlights for broadcast quality footage!! Try it you’ll see

@@tokhenz perhaps but it’s less risky than losing any definition in over-exposed highlights like clouds and sky. Mine is set at 90% so any higher is asking for trouble

I saw something that says the base iso's for A7IV in PP11 are 125, 500. I'd prefer the 2000 on the Siii.

Using a 0.0 meter equates to about 75 on Zebras. At least on my A1 when shooting people. When you say “skin tone” zebras do you simply mean using the zebra function on skin? I don’t see a setting for “skin tone zebras.” I’m not holding my camera right now so maybe I’m getting a brain cramp. A couple other things. One, you kind of went through the whole range of zebras. I couldn’t tell which one you settled on. And two, why was your 109+ zebra shot so dark? Shouldn’t it be the brightest? Is my brain a pretzel this morning? Finally, thanks for making this. Even if I disagree with or don’t understand your suggestions I’m glad to see this topic covered.

Great video thanks Jason! Quick question, have you graded at all if you underexposed the subject to make sure you don’t blow out the sky? Variable ND would probably handle but just curious how well the underexposure handles noise etc. thanks man keep it going!

Perhaps - also depends on how fast a lens you're using too. You can go higher but you'll just get more noise.

Any idea what the zebras for s cinetone should be for a 18% gray card? I know for slog3 sony says 41% for a gray card. But for s cinetone? 50 or something? Thanks

I think "pretty skin" is also about the quality of the light on the face, hard light is not as nice as soft light, and the direction of light - with S-Cinetone because you don't need to color grade it like S-Log3 for example, you can judge what looks "pretty" in the camera monitor/viewfinder.

Thanks Jason! When I vlog on the go in S-Cinetone there may be times where the exposure changes a lot. In those scenarios should I set shutter speed or aperature to Auto if I want to keep at the base ISOs? I suppose if I'm vlogging I should just go auto ISO and not worry about the base ISO advantages...

I am playing a lot with s-cinetone for vlogging because of the lower base iso than slog3 so as not to have to worry about a variable ND - also need to dial in the "auto vlogging a7s3" settings - I'll make a vid about it when I'm happy I've worked out the bet settings :)

For vlogging you'll probably want to let the ISO be on auto and don't want shutter speed or aperture on auto. Shutter speed for live action when not using green screen you want at double your frame rate. ie. if you are shooting at 24fps, then set shutter at 48 (or 50 if your camera doesn't have 48). For aperture, you also don't want that fluctuating as it will cause your depth of field to change during a shot. Do some noise tests yourself where you vary the ISO manually in different lighting conditions from 100 to 2000 and see if the non-base ISOs are acceptable to you. You will be suprised that under most conditions other than low light you will not feel too bad about noise at even non-base. The other possibility is to get a VND and rotate that between shots if lighting conditions change, that way you can leave ISO on manual as well.

Good video. Thanks. Question about the lower-limit zebra setting. You suggest setting lower limit to 109. Does S-Cinetone clip at 110? On the old firmware, there was a "bug" (or feature?) in the zebras. If you set lower limit at or above the clipping point, the zebras would not work. For example, HLG3 clips at 100. If the zebra lower limit was set to 100 or above, you would never see zebras. You have to set it at 99 for zebras to appear. Same with S-Log3... that clips at 95, so zebra lower limit had to be set at 94 to work. I can't test for myself because I'm on a Mac and Sony software doesn't work on the current Mac OS.

Thanks for the video! So for SONT A7S3 s-cinetone there are 2 base iso. ISO 100 and 2000, but what if you push it to lets say iso 3200? is the noise similar to pushing it to iso 200?

Hi you're welcome! :) Yes you will get more noise as you move away from base ISOs - I haven't done an exact comparison for eg 1 stop above both bases - that would be an interesting experiment to do!! :)

Zebra lvl at 109+ clipping is not accurate. You might want to correct that. Everything is blown up at that mark. Setting at 100 seems right.
