Thank you guys for all your shares of this video as well as the comments and feedback. I can’t tell you how often I get great input which helps me learn about what I can do better. I am sincerely trying to do my best to provide to you the most accurate information you can get about both of the top end mirrorless cameras in the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7.
This Epic Shootout took a significant amount of work and resources, and there is also a lot of information I left out for the sake of time. I actually performed a series of Dynamic Range tests that will support much of what I listed, and I will add a link to my blog when it is all confirmed and organized. That test is more scientific and easily repeatable by anyone who owns these cameras.

Production Notes:
- Sony A7s 4K video was recorded to the Aja Ki Pro Quad Recorder, we used the same recorder for the 10-Bit GH4 4K video and were unsuccessful recording 10-Bit through the HDMI port.
- GH4 was a joy to use. The internal 4K recording and $800 less-in-price are really what made it stand out. Whatever magic is happening inside that little camera is special. The A7s takes more time to learn to navigate.

Awesome comparison man. One feature that the A7s isn't getting the credit I think it deserves is the fact that it has an APSC mode which practically eliminates rolling-shutter and gives all of your prime lenses two focal lengths without losing any quality. Great review!

Thank you for the comment- It is an important note. I was trying to focus on 4K for this shootout. Both cameras actually have smaller format recording modes for 1080 (not 4K), but it seems its better to record in 4K and then crop in post on the GH4. Some users may not understand that the crop mode uses a smaller part of the sensor and therefore cannot use the same max resolution as it does for 4K. I can confirm that there are fewer problems with the A7s at 1080 than at 4K, like in the moire example. Thank you again for your input!

Very informative video, good comparissons. About lens selection though. It was said that A7s has less lens selections available based on the preference of wanting autofocus. Though I want to add to that that the A7s has a few important advantages for lens selection. - It's thin lens mount. The distance between the sensor and the lens mount is very short. This means you can fit virtually every brand or type of lens on there with an adaptor without causing vignetting. - Full frame sensor. Because the sensor is full frame, you can use both full frame lenses, and APS-C lenses. With the APS-C can always down-size the effective sensor size by using it in crop-mode to get rid of the vignetting. On a Micro4/3 you can not up-scale your effective sensor size when you use a full frame lens, your field of view will be changed. This essentially means that a bigger range of vintage, prime and exotic lenses are available to the A7s and more likely to fit on the body for cool filmmaking and shots. As well as the zoom and autofocus lenses, where the auto might not always work. So in all, it's a wider array of lenses that would be usable on the body manually. And I think a lot of videographers, filmmakers will be attracted to the A7s and like manual focus pulling and prime-lenses anyway. So not having as much autofocus lenses available to them isn't that big of a deal as they prefer manual to begin with.

This is the greatest camera review I've ever seen. I say that as a very angry, bitter man who doesn't give away compliments for free. Especially not for photography or writing. You answered every question I had about both cameras without coming off as a jackass or looking, sounding, and being like "Roger" from American Dad. I think I've probably seen about 4000+ video reviews since I first started shooting. This was the best by far.

Outstanding Review... All I can say is thank you for such in depth comparison!! You've just made my mind up on getting the GH4... I wanted to upgrade to a "compact size" camera that was a Jack of All Trades but is Genuinely good at them all whilst still being small enough to travel with!! I knew the photo quality wasn't going to match a Full Frame SLR, and that the A7s would be best for low light speciality, and I knew that there were better dedicated 4K Filming cameras out there (for a hefty price and size), but to have one small package that does all of them so well and trumping the A7s as a stills camera... My mind is set. Thanks again Michael.

After many years shooting with my old Minolta AFglass, I'm now leaning toward the A7s. I've tested my stable of old Minolta AF lenses using the Sony LA-EA4 adapter on the A7s: auto-focus speed and sharpness easily out perform over my old Maxxum 7000, but not quite as fast as native Sony lenses. This vid really helped me understand the pros and cons of both systems...thanks so much for making it available, Mike!

This is a very informative video and I really enjoyed your deep analysis. As a person that works in Industrial video, and independent entertainment video I can see myself getting a lot more out of the Sony A7s than the GH4 simply due to the fact that I will need to have to constantly be renting costly lenses for the GH4 to get the same kind of performance in lower light scenarios. Mainly, if I can get away with less lighting kits it will help reduce change over time from shot to shot. Great video!

Steve K I actually have some good footage of them side by side I can post. The gist is, I don't think the cost and effort of 10 bit is really worth it ($2000 recorder, $2000 YAGH, Cables, etc)
