I sit down with Shane Ruggieri from Dolby to get an insight look at what a colorist does and also better understand what Dolby Vision is and HDR while he color grades Sony A7SIII Footage.

Well you said it, this just emphasizes when Armando said "I don't mess with this kind of stuff". This proves that most youtubers stick to the basics, be it photography or videography, while the pros play it on the big league where there are teams and the quality of the content needs to be way up there

As a colourist I find my self more of a therapist between the director, the producer and the DP. As long as everybody walks out of the room happy I’ve done my job. I’ll fix the noise in the shadows and roll off the highlights when they’re gone...

Now that we're on it. What's your go to strategy to fix noise in the shadows?
@ChrisdeCastro
@ChrisdeCastro 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that would be different on a case by case basis but if I have the raw source I would start by checking exposure settings or redoing the first light to match the rest of the scene. That takes care of most problems and is also really tedious so I don’t want to do that during client time. If the footage is in a not ideal format (4:2:0 8 bit junk...) or was just shot underexposed I’ll nudge up the NR, unlink the chroma if it’s really colour noise and abuse the temporal NR cause that thing is brilliant. Also doing luma keys if I want to keep details in areas and matching back in a bit of grain. ...but y’know, whatever works
@SchaffnerMovies
@SchaffnerMovies 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisdeCastro Yeah that's what I guessed, thanks for the insight. 8-bit is by far the best footage I can work with (camera wise), so best I can go with will still be with NeatVideo NR. The more I film and do post I realize how important the amount of information in the raw footage is. Over or underexposed? Well gotta find a way to get the footage to a level it's not too weird. Hopefully I can upgrade from the S II to an S III at some point. Really want to get my hands on some nice 10-bit. Really want to know how different it will be to correct and grade.
@ChrisdeCastro
@ChrisdeCastro 3 жыл бұрын
@@SchaffnerMovies you can get a great image with a lesser camera, you just have to do more work before you start rolling. Working on getting lighting right for a good exposure in camera will make you a better DP. I’m finding lots of DPs getting lax because they know they can recover in post when they shoot raw. Understanding how to get that image on set will also make you better when working in post. Good luck and keep at it

I like the talk of focus on feel, and intent..that’s the mentality of story tellers. Discussion 22:50 is beautiful. “ Yes you can shoot in raw, but does your story need it?” Always start with the story, the feeling that you want to convey.👏👏👏👏

it's actually a very good and humble advise. he basically said that you don't need all the gimicks (fancy equipment and/or heavy/elaborate post production) if your purpose don't ask for them. it's just like what he said, a hammer for nails and screwdriver for screws. the right tool for the right job.

@shanemario13 3 жыл бұрын
You're right on! Our fields are intimately related, we just use different tools. Great thing is, we can and, often do, compliment each other, cueing off each other with out really "working" directly together. One of my favorite sound mixes is ROMA from Alfonso Cuaron, his ATMOS mix of that movie was hands down the most amazing experience for me. We played it in our 1275 Market St in SF Dolby Cinema and I was blown away at how much I was transported into the moments he created. He used panning sound scapes...one scene, it was raining outside and you could hear the rain from the living room, the open downstairs and the kitchen (and each had it's own quality), as the camera panned the placement of the living room, downstairs and kitchen were panned to remain logically where they should be as if you had just turned your head.... yes others have done this, but not to this level... EVERY conversation in the movie was scripted. YES... EVERY. ... such realism... and that's exactly what we try to do in the color bay when we can. ...so yes, I imagine you know exactly what I was saying.crazy indeed...

I'm very impressed by Shane. Not only he seems to be a very kind, well spoken, nice guy, I just love the way he thinks about his job. Even though I'm a working music composer and have no idea about color corection and found myself on this channel by accident, the way he describes his process is inspiring and could be easilly adopted in my field. Which is focusing on a story and emotion rather than technicalities. The amount of time I wasted worrying about my computer, software and gear often makes me forget what is the thing I do, or should do, in my job - co-create a story and use all the electronics as tools, nothing more than tools.

I'm an audio engineer who only dabbles in video, but I find this all very interesting. As in my profession, the kinds of questions on the minds of amateurs are so different from the questions on the minds of professionals who work in their field day-in and day-out. There's a tendency for amateurs to be so focused on the technical and the tools that they lose sight of the overarching purpose of what we're all trying to do here in the media... tell a story, and tell it in the most compelling way possible. The technical matters up until the point that it doesn't any more. I kept hearing him say this, in one form or another, with every question that he was asked.

Thank you so much for such an amazing workshop dissolved in almost 35 minutes that I could watch in the comfort of my home. if you don’t wanna deal in post production with noise for low expose then don't underexpose. As simple as that ! Gracias Armando, con este vídeo sacaste la pelota del estadio. Un abrazo desde Panamá 🇵🇦

@@petrub27 I got the opposite-people who worry too much about technicality and equipment tend to lose the soul and story of the project. I respect Tyler Stalman’s question, but I love the answer to it: focus on the story! My ethos, and my company’s ethos, is that story IS everything

(Gets to the end…) “what do you mean it’s already over?! More more MORE!” Great interview. Only slightly sad my question didn’t get asked. Also that 3D face tracking for the power window makes me want to learn Resolve for grading.

Pls learn resolve. I was scared of the interface at first, but in two days, I know where each tool was and could find my way. It is an interesting software and makes color-grading an exhilarating experience for every colorist. The 3D face tracker is boss. It's so powerful for it makes your face pop...

I love this type of video. So many youtubers, even the big names like Peter McKinnon and Matti Haapoja just kind of gloss over the basics of the color grading process. This offers a better insight into the process. Also, another great channel more specific to color grading that offers great color grading and color correcting tips is "color grading central". Thanks for sharing Armando.
