This is a hands-on preview of the brand new Sony a9 III. A camera that does things in a full frame mirrorless camera we've never seen. We're talking a 24.6 megapixel global shutter. Global means, when you take the photo, every pixel fires at the same time. That means, no more banding, no more bent bats, warped balls or jello in your videos. On top of that, they have Pre shooting and 120 FPS RAW SHOOTING with full time af and metering. INSANE is an understatement. This is just a first look, we will have way more information as we get to use the camera more.

THIS! My thoughts exactly, it's a bit pricy, but honestly I don't mind saving up for this camera. It would make concert photos soooo much easier for me. used A1's were going for around $4500 and I was planning on waiting for this release before I bought one, and im glad I did.

The issue at the moment with this camera for theatre production photography is the reduced dynamic range and higher noise levels than the previous two models. The real torture test will be photographing a musical, a play in a large theatre and smaller plays in fringe theatres under various brightnesses of lightings using all different brands of LED theatre lights. Photographing concerts is a simpler test for the camera.

24MP has been good enough since the Canon 80D days and probably even before that. But of course there might be some who need more. For me, 24/26 are totally ok. Exciting to see what the next A1 will do. The only time in my style of work that I found extra MP useful was at an indoor event in a pub on a loaner XH2. I didn't have the luxury of time to keep switching to my 75mm and so in some cases the 40MP came in handy in post. I must also say that I was really struggling with the horrible lighting there and Lightroom's AI handled the high ISO images really well. Having said that, for wildlife and birding, a capable high MP camera is of course amazing to have.

Y'know, I was disappointed when the R6 was only 20 MP but since I've had the opportunity to use it I'm realizing just how much you can really do with it. Plus, that sensor is a BEAST! And I'm betting that the Sony sensor is just as good. I've printed 24x36 with 20 MP and it looked great! I've seen huge prints of 24 MP photos that looked amazing! So 24 MP is more than we think. Of course, I still use my R5 when I really mean business...

I was thinking maybe password/pin protection and or a finger print reader, maybe work like a phone or laptop, you can set the screen timeout, or choose to lock it as you please. Tracking would be nice on the higher end models, for a 5-6k device, you shouldn't have to buy your own air tag, that kind of stuff should be built in, if phones can have it at a 500-1500 price point, there's no reason high end camera's can't have it. Thanks for the preview and cheers to Chris (was Jordan also there? :D ) Great to see Sony pushing the technology forward, finally! I think Canon could update R3 with pre-shooting in raw and a few other features the R6 MK2 brought in, via firmware update. It's already quite a nice piece of gear anyway (damn that SD card slot though slowing things down!). But overall it's not that far off, really. The R5 MK2 and R1 though, the expectations are high. Interesting time and can't wait to see what Canon will come up with. Nikon though, I think they have already proven they are right up there with the top stuff. What we are missing is a proper refresh to Z6 and Z7.

@DaveHaynie
@DaveHaynie 6 ай бұрын
Here's at least part of the story. The base ISO of 250 sets some of the DR question, because of course, every camera increases DR as the ISO increases. I can tell you why there's a base ISO of 250. Every 24 FF sensor will have basically the same size photodiodes on the sensor, producing essentially the same output. The photodiode output is continuous ... you need storage, too, because an exposure integrates light over time. So there's also a thing called a charge well -- in electronics, we call that a capacitor. It's a charge storage element. Every sensor has charge wells for each pixel on the sensor. When you shoot a photo at base ISO (no amplification), your base is basically determined by comparing what the camera does to chemical photography (there are detailed ISO standards nearly every company uses). So you have an ISO100 base if you can take essentially the same photo at ISO100. You'll also notice that as sensors get smaller, base ISO tends to increase. My Micro Four Thirds cameras have a 200 base ISO. Why would side matter? The size of the photodiode isn't the issue, it's the size of the charge well. Smaller photodiodes mandate smaller charge wells, everything being equal. In the same light, a smaller charge well will "overflow" sooner than a larger one. In shot, an ISO 100 sensor can store twice the charge per charge well, peak, as an ISO 200 base sensor. So this chip pretty clearly has smaller charge wells than your typical 24 megapixel FF sensor. Why? Well, I think part of it is the optimization for speed -- which is kind of the point of a global electronic sensor camera, eh? The camera exposes the sensor, charges up the charge wells, converts charge to voltage, reads those voltages out to an array of analog-to-digital converters, sends that data over a high speed bus to your camera's image signal processor and, voila, a photo! There's an inherent time constant with any charging or discharging of a capacitor in a circuit. To increase the base ISO, Sony would probably have to lower the top shutter speed and maybe (depending on any other bottlenecks) the sensor readout speed. Sony's selling a whole line of cameras. In fact, with the A7 series, they were really the first company to go after the idea of "you need more than one version of the same camera" at least to professionals. If your main need is resolution, you have an A7R. If your main need is DR, you have an A7S ... assuming, of course, you're a Sony shooter. They were pushing the idea that one size does not fit all in capabilities, rather than the high/low-end scale used by most companies. This is one more option for those who want this, knowing that any body choice represents some kind of tradeoff over other options.

Interesting to see global shutter pushing through. Nikon filed that patent for global shutter sensor with 1000fps and huge dynamic range couple years back. I'm sure Canon is coming up with their solution in R1. Sony didn't mention nothing about the dynamic range (usually always mentioned) and as the base ISO starts from 250 there might still be some cons on this technology

Wait for the A1 ii! They say it's registered a second top of a line, and until now, nobody really knew what new real development a new A1 could bring. Now we know, it's global registration and that awesome sync flash time that will expand creativity a lot 🎉! Just the samples, my word! Instead of 120fps, probably going on to stack images, for depth of field with blur effect for those macro shots! Well done Sony! You pull off an Ace in an era where all brands are great!

@@photobunny It's the bus. Type A of the same Gen will never be as fast as type B (which is not as fast as type C). Just like PCie 4 is faster than earlier generations, and the old architectures can't even use them. A bit of mental math. A twenty five mp image at 16 bits will be at least 50MBytes. Twenty images is a gig. 120 images per second is 6GB per sec.
@danncorbit3623
@danncorbit3623 6 ай бұрын
@@photobunny 120fps for 16 bit raw is 7gigabytes/sec so even type C is not fast enough to sustain it. There's probably a huge RAM buffer to hold the data before it goes to card. Type C could handle 100fps continuous without slowing down. Type B 50fps, and type A 25fps. So after your RAM buffer fills, I guess the camera will drop to 25fps. Next Gen type A may possibly raise it to 50fps, but the type C next Gen could handle 120fps without slowing down. And with a firehose like that shoving data, you are going to want big storage. We'll see when they measure it.

The fix in 10 years from now: The new Sony A9 mark 10, 50000 frames per second. While I'm quite impressed with the specs, am I the only one who thinks that things are getting out of hand in terms of how many frames per second cameras can shoot? I mean I almost exclusively shoot with the mechanical shutter at 12 fps on my R6 mark2 and it still feels like overkill at times, even when I'm tracking people or animals. Wish they'd put as much effort into developing revolutionary sensors with better dynamic range and high iso performance instead of focusing on the 120 shots, 119 of which you're going to be deleting anyway.

Nikon can't follow. For many reasons: 1. They depend on Sony's mercy: why will Sony give a modern sensor to Nikon? 2. They don't have the money to fly around KZfaqrs, which means that the likes of Tony and Chealsy don't see anything special in Nikon's telephoto range 3. Nikon lacks an entry-level camera that can focus at least as well as the other brands did 5 years ago. They don't have a set of inexpensive lenses that one can recommend to someone starting photography. This means Nikon has issues attracting the new generations. This machine basically kills the Z9 and the R3 (but no one is going to underscore that, because Canon also flies KZfaqrs all around the world). Nikon could cut the prices 20% to try to compete, but they don't have a healthy source of income outside photography Sony and Canon have the costumer electronic devices etc. Sony can also invest in advanced technologies because they dominate the smartphone camera market.

@@questioneverything680 yes, those are all pretty much the same as well. Based on the silicon currently available.

Hi Jared, please please do a motorsport video with this new sony along with the 200-600 would be great to see how the images look at speeds, from a zoomed in & zoomed out all hand held....also with 1.4 extender to see how the inbuilt stabiliser stands out to what you use currently. All the best mate & enjoy the tests.

I’ll pay money for a firmware update. There is nothing holding back the A1 other than it’s locked down firmware to protect the A7IV (no focus breathing comp) A9iii (no Pre-Capture) a7C (no Animal/bird eye AF in video) & A7RV (Focus Stacking in body) it’s all firmware... the A1 has the hardware and its crippled because nobody has jailbroken it

No Animal Eye AF in video, no Pre-Capture, no focus stacking in body. It is a joke or a FW update that will slow down and cripple the A1, just like how Apple slows down and cripples their phones through forced obsolescence

Sony did not mention the dynamic range of this camera which is very odd. As is the reduced ISO range which starts higher and finish lower than the A9II

Global CMOS sensors have typically been much lower resolution, lower DR, and noisier than their rolling shutter cousins. Canon's had one since 2022, but it's only 19.4 megapixels, sold for industrial applications. I sounds like Sony has solved most of those issues, but I think a reduced ISO range is something I'd expect, at least for the first generation.

Maybe DR is taking a hit. At the same time, DR has been so huge these years that we have a bit of margin to be honest.

@@Maxime-ho9iv not sure I would want to take a step back in IQ, not when paying $6000. We will have to wait and see. I wonder if reviewers will get the camera before it's released in 4-5 months. Another odd thing and the this release, why the wait

@@nickwilliams7867 it all depends on what « quality » is for you. We just took for granted that our sensor reads line by lane but if you think about it this is the worse quality you can get :) DR is an order magnitude less important than having straight things straight. I think global shutter will redefine everything.

@@Maxime-ho9iv that depends on what you shoot. Can’t say I’ve ever seen a photo from an a1 and thought the lines are not straight. If the dynamic range and high iso are no better than the A9 mk1 from six years ago I can not see me getting this. Sony now has the two most expensive full frame cameras . The A9III is a huge 50% more Than Nikons Z8. We will have to wait and see if Sony has given up on stacked sensors. I would love a A8 with stacked sensor and aimed at wedding and event photographers . Especially if it close to the Z8 in price

Absolute game changer. I can’t wait to see what the tech in cameras will be like a few years from now. It’s so hard to upgrade when they release cameras on a yearly basis now. Rip to our wallets 😅
