I chose the A7CR over the V because of the size and weight. I chose it over the A7Cii because of the ability to crop even more and get away with just one prime lens. Why? I want best possible image quality while paragliding and bike packing (sometimes in dim light). Weight, size is obviously a big factor.

I think Mark Bennett has a video with that specific comparison. The a6700 is my main driver for wildlife because of the 1.5 times crop and 4K 120. If you're a birder, that camera may be a better choice than the a7r5 since that model does not have 4K 120. If you're not frequently shooting at 600 mm focal lengths or above, or you don't prefer a smaller camera, the a74 is probably a better choice with better Ibis, generally better image quality, better handling experience, and many other things. Comparisons of cameras are difficult since we're individuals so I would watch videos on each camera and see which one checks the most boxes. If you have a lot of excellent Sony glass, the a6700 is a high performance beast at a very low price point, but I would rather have the A74 for Astro, landscape, portraiture, concerts, indoor low light shooting, weddings, and travel, but that last one may be better with the a6700 if you have fast APS-C glass and you want to be more inconspicuous. If you haven't already, try watching videos by Gordon Laing, The Hybrid Shooter, Dustin Abbott, Christopher Frost, and the aforementioned Mark Bennett's Camera Crisis. Also, the a7c2 should be considered if you like that form factor.

Got a Olympus OM1 for 1100$ + Olympus 12-40 f2.8 for 400$ and since i use it for hiking/mountaineering on rough conditions on temps like -25'C or climbing i think it was a smart choice going for a tough light system.I could never see myself dragging a Sony A7R5 + 24-70 f2.8 (around 5000$ combo) on this conditions and the extra bulk.The IBIS is just insane so low light is really not a problem for me. Handheld exposure of 2-3seconds no problem. Heck it does really well on astro with a little Laowa 7.5mm f2!

The best Sony camera to buy now is a used a9 if you could get one at around US$1500. Stacked sensor, still one of the best autofocus, 20fps (15fps with third-party lenses), very good battery life. It's as affordable as a used XH2 or OM1 here in Taiwan. Downside: asymmetrical card slots (one of a reason that kept me away from many Canon and Nikon cameras), only 5fps in mechanical shutter, micro-USB port, poor smartphone control compared to models older than the a7R2 or models newer than the a1.

I’m still using A7R2 for stills, the sensor is just so good still, miss the joystick and latest autofocus but i can still shoot 4k video if necessary. Really considering the A7r5 but it sure is a lot of money

I took a7r5 over the A1 because it is too expensive and without monitor's vertical-flip. Or I'd choosen the A93 had it say 33MP. I keep A7r2 despite their other (bad) battery type, and same sensor a7r3 : for my not-af-requiring work. These can btw be found second hand mint condition ..."4 for 1" (one per lens...), a best option sometimes for even most critical work and that many forget

most interesting with Sony line is that their old camera models aren't discontinued and its a bit unfortunate they aren't included here (but I understand that you have to cover new models and it would be too many camera compared in one video if all currently produced options were included). I would prefer A7III over A7IV for example. IMO no tilt screen is a dealbreaker and flipscreen is just horrible to use and improvements in photos dont justify price increase (and I dont do video). I would rather buy A7III and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art, same price as A7IV body only...

I am shooting while travelling..My first Sony- combo with 3 primes (fe35 2.8 , 55 1.8 and batis25 )and A7r1 was only 1200 Gramm total - by impressive iq- but changed to A7r 3 because of the shutter Shock- and added the 24-105 for travelling- to protect the sensor better- i am happy with that…

@@kevinrtres Nah. I'm just a ordinary software developer - nothing special at all :) But I'm 62 and I did save up during the years to buy the gear I wanted (be it Canon then and now Sony)! I thought "I can't afford a Ferrari or a Mclaren" - but I love photography and I can afford the best gear if I can wait long enough and save for it.

I would agree with your assessment. I own the A7R5. As a general assignment focusing on portraits and events photographer the A7R5 more than meets my needs. Exceptional image quality in a camera that checks many of the boxes that I am concerned about. I believe that the A7R5 is the right camera for the job.

@@IRFAN-po5sz (Here at least is a visual clue : A7RV is among those body-design évolutions (among the different A-series), where it"s "top big wheel" is now "double layered". Thus here, custom mémorisations (any?) adress/switches either video or stills modes of these cameras specifically. Selection of any Custom1, C2, C3 no longer affects necessarily both as tied. Now, sensor-type wise: it's design puts it on the rolling-effect prone (unesthetic/transforming distortion effects) cameras, meaning, prone/systematic ; "only" if you have to use it wile in "those many" conditions, where these effectd get triggered. Perhaps never in your prioritezed working environments /situations. But those priorisations of yours, myself I am NOT expert on the video side, so You have to define elsewhere what categories fall best in line for You, and generally or speciffically .)

Thank you for the breakdown of these cameras. From the photography perspective point of view, I would breakdown even more on the shutter noise level which extremely few people actually mentions yet an extremely important topic in real life camera usage. As an event photographer, the A7 IV and A7R V's noisy mechanical curtain shutters (~3.5ms) both got quiet a few BIG eye rolls and official complains in many events and locations I had photographed that involves both flash and artificial/indoor lighting photography. Both cameras can not operate the flash without the mechanical shutter curtain and the silent electronic shutter does not have the Anti-Flicker feature to operate without getting bending effect in indoor artificial lighting conditions due to their slow sensor readout speeds at ~66ms for A7 IV and ~99ms for A7R V unless the facility has invested in high quality LED lights. On the other hand, the A1 and A9 III both have fast silent electronic sensor read out at ~3.8ms for A1 and ~0.0ms for A9 III that can activate the Anti-Flicker/Variable Anti-Flicker feature to operate flashes at 1/200s or 1/250s for A1's Full/APS-C mode (1/400s & 1/500s with mechanical shutter) and 1/800,000s or 1/160,000s for A9 III depending on the lens used. Of course when using the silent electronic shutter the mechanical curtain shock vibration is eliminated as well as no mechanical actuation count or ware and tare are involved with the mechanical shutter mechanism system which also product cleaner images with higher resell value when upgrading. These are amazing useful features that many owner like me found out too late after purchased the less expansive models.

I bought the A7Cr as a travel camera. Ive had the A7Riii for some years and wanted to get something lighter to take on a Europe trip. Ive teamed this with a 17mm Sigma f/4 lens that I love using. All metal construction and a magnetic lens cap. At 17mm I can get closer to subjects than those using phones so can avoid the “someone is in my photo” syndrome (although I am careful to get my shot quickly and move away for others). Great for all those tourist icons I’ve been viewing. I also picked up a 28 to 200mm Tamron that is not as nice to use. I do wish there was a modern 24 or 28 to 200mm that had good optical quality in a lightweight body - and yes give me a magnetic lens cover again.

Thank you for your insightful reviews, this one was fantastic. I came over to Sony from Canon with the Nex-5N as my first mirrorless and soot landscapes and cityscapes. Upgrading over the years I was sold on the A7R system and have an A7RV. But I also splurged and got the A7CR as my backup. As I have gotten older I love the light weight and combined with a Tamron 28-200 it is the perfect travel outfit. I carry a Sony 20mm for night and wide angle landscapes.

Hey Matt. I bought the A7RV when it was released. My budget may have not yet recovered. LOL. And I added the A7CII for street and urban photography. I am a b it lazy and I must admit that I am startled how good the files out of A7RV are straight out of camera when I shoot in Auto mode. For portrait and landscape, the images are really really good.

For me i am primarily a wedding and real-estate photographer and i do some video as well also i do drone video For my cameras for fast photo and good video i use the fujifilm xh2s with the new 1.4 primes the 8-16 2.8 for indoor video and wide shots of the event halls and the 80mm 2.8 macro for the ring shots and any other detailed close up photos i need And for low light photos portrait some product shots on occasion and for real-estate stills i use my gfx 100s with the 50mm 3.5 for group photos and portraits and i use the tilt shift lenses for the real-estate stills

I won’t buy the FX3 because it doesn’t have any EVF, I’m waiting for the A7S 4… which I think will be their ultimate cinema mirror . NAB is just around the corner so I’m hoping for some kind of announcement.

Matt I appreciate your in depth analysis of all the systems. I've shot with an A7 IV since it was released along with the Sony 200-600. I just recently acquired the Sony 300 GM/2.8 with both Sony TCs wanting better IQ and was blown away! I shoot a lot of wildlife and birds and I found the combo remarkably good but wanted more. Namely better AF. Better speed. A good friend of mine got an A9 III and I observed what it could do. I was impressed to say the least. He has an A1 also and after shooting with the A9 III has become very enamored with it Yes, like many others I always wanted an A1 but thought $6500 for a 3 year old camera was too much considering what else is out there. Well after much thought I just recently acquired an A9 III and an A7R5 and sold my A7 IV. This was after much consideration of my shooting goals and needs and multiple hours of watching videos like yours and many others. I participated in many Sony groups on FB and discussions and the bottom line is, I feel happy with my decisions and love both systems! I did consider the Nikon Z8 but I am so ensconced in the Sony ecosystem that I felt switching would be too much. At least in my case. Well after shooting with both Sony systems I’m excited at the possibilities going forward! The tech and form factor updates are amazing. The IQ is really good with the A9 III and the DR, ISO and resolution issues talked to death IMO are overblown and negligible really. It’s just a great camera hands down! All these changes have to surface in a new A1 II I feel. But when? My friend doesn't think it will happen anytime soon as the current A1 is still selling well. Nobody knows. I’ll have to address that occurrence if it ever happens but in the meantime, I’m very satisfied. Thanks again for all your in depth and informative reviews! It helped me a lot! 👍🏻

Thank you for the video. I’m both a Sony and Canon shooter but not a videographer. I’m really happy with ma A7RV ( landscape and architecture ) and A1 ( mostly wildlife and BIF ) but also enjoy my A7CR and A7CII as both travel companions and as a backup for the full size bodies. The variety is great lenses is a huge plus. Easy to find a body and lens(es) that fits your needs. Take care.

I own the A7RV for mainly family portraits and studio work while I got two A7iv which is genuine used for outdoor events like parades or community support. For my EDC I used an A7CII.

I'm seriously considering an a7iv at the moment as i contemplate migrating from my Canon DSLR system. I'm an amateur stills photographer. The a7iv is affordable (just), has great performance , image quality and sensible file sizes . Sure , i would like the higher burst speed and pre capture of the A9 , but short of selling a kidney , thats not going to happen. The availability of 3rd party glass and reasonably priced used Sony lenses is a bonus.

A7iv for mostly sports here. In this application, it should be described as a 6 FPS camera because of AF capabilities. But it has a full mechanical shutter that lacks to the A7cii. I wish Sony wiĺl create a camera with great tracking, 33+ MP, 15 FPS an a vertically tilting screen. None of their current cameras meets those requirements.

For me, the A7RV was never an option, as at that time, I already owned the A7S, A7RII and A9. I got the A1 when it was available 3 years ago and now i bought the A9III 2 month ago. Apart from the resolution, it is by far the best camera in the SONY lineup. It's low light AF is even better than on the A1. This matters more, than the lower ISO performance. The sightly lower DR is no issue for my fast action sports and concert photography, as no output media can reproduce more than 12 stops at it best, with printers and displays at around 10 stops anyway. Not even to mention jpg, which can only reproduce 8 stops.

And the a9iii is a better video camera than the A1. It has the best dynamic range in video than any other camera in Sonys mirrorless line. Yes this a a fact that is supported from lab test from CineD and my own personal use from me owning an A1 A7rv a7siii and fx6

@@AR-vf7vg For me, 24Mp is ok, as the the GS is far more beneficial than 33Mp. And I still have the A1 and A7RII, if I need more Mpx. Yes the A7RII is still one of the best cameras for high resolution and the price is unbeatable, if you can get one second hand.

@@renestaempfli1071 just clarify for eventual newcomers to sony cameras ..that I meant writing more clearl before; that I still use (2x) A7R2 to best advantages, but also a r3 (aboth models have the same sensor, as you know). I'd however stress that I definitally recommend find r3 over the r2 just only because of the immensely better battery type, and that are interchangeable with all their 'current model cameras'. (sure, not an issue for setups that allow or requier to bypass the batteries.)

Hi Matt. Is 61mp really an advantage in image quality over 33mp, other than for cropping? I shoot mostly portraits and family, often with children. You suggested that 61mp is an advantage for portraits. Is there a real world difference in results or is it more a matter of cropping flexibility. Thanks! Art

Is still worth to get an used A7Riii with the sony 16-35mm f/2.8 (GM) both going together for 2k??? I’m trying to decide what’s going to be my first camera, and I want one hybrid camera that I could use for at least 5 years, and I will probably be using only this lens in the first 2 years so Idk if is a good choice. (The shutter count of the camera is 21,000)

As I am not making money with photos, but share an enthusiasm for nice photos of travel, hike, family or any events. I have limited my budget to 2k USD. This is where it doesn't hurt too much when putting money aside, I am getting paid for working. A7CII is perfect for me. it fits the price tag, all requirements to shooting photos. And most importantly, it is very small. less weight and less volume to carry around.

I will have to say not sure. I am using A7R4 right now. For less than $2000 I think if you want a high res camera this is the one to buy, auto focus is still good. A7R3 is still good for most of the shooting it has a very good 42mp sensor. I would not buy an A1 or its replacement, I am more interested in the Nikon Z8. Sony for me is now just a camera seller, they only want to sell their new cameras with very few upgrade, they are now charging for firmware upgrade and they rarely release new firmware upgrade. If I want to upgrade then I will probably go for a Nikon Z8 rather than a Sony A7R5 or A1, with Z8 you get a camera that has the speed and video capability similar to a A1 you loss a bit in resolution for still to both but Nikon has been consistent in providing firmware upgrade that enhance the features of its products. The price difference between a Z8 and an A1 is enough for some native Z mount lenses and E mount can also be adapt on Z mount Nikons.

9:17 This seems to be eyelash autofocus. I thought Sony didn't make that mistake? ;) If I were to consider Sony, I'd probably go for the A7 IV. But it would have to have the A9 III grip.

So are you fully switching ? :) I am concidering the A7 C II / R for size and I/Q , would be better in many ways than the over hyped X100VI. BTW I own the Z9 for 2 years love it! but recently it let me down a bit... The Af tracking for most subjects is great , Eye AF still needs some improvements compared to others as it seems ( by what I see in reviews here on youtube) I used the 135 Plena , granted it was at 1.8 because that's the point of this lense , I was about 13 -15 ft. away from the model. And I got mostly Eyebrow / Eyelash AF rather than Actual Eye AF (pupil). Any advice? tried on forums but I was mainly blaimed for improper technique and I was advised to use pin point AF like a DSLR... which defeats the point of a good Eye AF system , would Sony preform better in this scanario ?

Sony wasn't in the camera business during the film days. However, the alpha line were from Minolta. If you were shopping for Minolta film camera, I'd recommend the Minolta a7. It supports Sony a-mount SSM lenses as well as traditional screw drive lenses. It has a special ability to rewind/fast forward film, emulate STF function for stationary subjects, and unlike most Nikon film cameras, it can leave the film header outside. It also play very well with bulk loaded film like the Kodak Vision 3 which would otherwise be problematic with Canon or Nikon film cameras with automated film winding features.

it's indeed somewhat tricky, a7r4 questions. For video and c's I have no insight, but for stills, and for more electronic shutter application types, and for more lowlight applications: I prefere the sensor type of the a7r3 (same as on a7r2) Drawbacks of A7R5 and r4 sensor's technology type, theiy are often not even alluded to : ( some good serious reports/studies 'out there". : Many. inherent consequences such as most prone to banding, least versatile for electronic(silent) shooting applications, and more.) I took a7r5 over the A1 because it is too expensive and without monitor's vertical-flip. Or I'd choosen the A93 had it say 33MP. I keep A7r2 despite their other (bad) battery type, and same sensor a7r3 : for my not-af-requiring work. These can btw be found second hand mint condition ..."4 for 1" (one per lens...), a best option sometimes for even most critical work and that many forget

Instead of the FX-3 I would recommend the ZV-E1, which is basically a FX-3 but at a much better price point.

@@holgerkrieg3587time code, shutter angle (which is coming by the end of the year), a body with a fan, extra mounting points, dual sd / cf express type A card slots. Cf express type a support for faster read out, Cine Ei mode, and I can keep going. They have the same sensor sure but if you’re a professional it’s really not a competition. The fx3 is for the working cinematographer. However you can get a lot done with the ZV E1. Just not as reliably.

Why? Has the smaller e-mount impacted Sony's ability to make good glass? I suggest you compare the Sony 50mm F1.2 GM vs Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S.

@@silvestrocrino3256 Sony heavily in camera correct their lenses. Nikon have the biggest Mount with lenses that are optimized and take advantage of the larger aperture. Where's your 35 1.2?

@@Ben_Stewart ... 1) Nikon, Canon, Leica, Panasonic, Olympus also correct their lenses in body, 2) The quality of many of Sony's G and GM lenses surpasses anything that Nikon offers. 3) Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox, etc, etc. all build lenses for FF e-mount. And obviously don't seem to have any problem doing so given how many are available. Does the Sony body correct all those lenses too? 4) Ah... where is your Nikon Z 35 F1.2? I don't see it for sale anywhere?

@@silvestrocrino3256 No. I am a Sony user and I actually agree with Ben on this. Sony has very good glasses and it also has a large following with great third party lens support from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Viltrox etc. But Nikon is getting much needed third party lens now with rebadged Tamron zooms, Viltrox and shortly Sigma. Most Sony users I spoke to are particularly interested in Nikon Z8 camera because if you look at Sony camera line up there is only 1 model that is comparable to a Z8 that is the A1 but cost almost 50% more than a Z8, that is enough to get a very good Z mount lens and Sony E can also be used on the Z.

I changed a A74 for a A7C2 with AI autofocus and it is absolutely dreadful in the autofocus just can’t get accurate focus have to resort to manual focus.I don’t know if mine has a internal problem but I’ve had 6 Alpha cameras and have been in to photography since the fifties .I have had hundreds of cameras video and photography cameras.Absolutely useless camera .Each one I buy they seem to get worse.On my A7C 2 I use the 24 mm G master 1.4 Tried other lenses and it’s the same story.

In 2024, almost none of the above. Folks should just wait for the a7v or the a7siv. All the latest higher end releases will have the BIONZ XR & AI Processing Unit. Pointless to buy new any Sony camera that doesn't have that. The a9iii and the A1 are just too expensive for what they are. The a7rv might be the best value since it is currently $400 off. Concerning the cropped Sony cameras, pointless to buy into that unless Sony brings out a proper pro Level STACKED version. Again, currently the a7rv, $3,498.00 Regular Price $3,898.00 Instant Savings $400.00

Honestly this is what I've also been thinking at the moment. The a7 iv price is what I prefer at the moment but currently the 7rV is the latest with the new AI/AF chips paired into it thats getting it so much praise however the 61 megapixel is already overkill. I do in between low light/band venue events and daytime photography generally but with 2024 coming to half of the year already so best bet is too wait and see what comes around soon.

The Sony A7R5 doesn't have a better sensor than the Sony A1. The A1 has a stacked sensor with a much faster readout speed without practically any rolling shutter effect with the electronic shutter. The A7R5 has no stacked sensor which much slower readout speed and with electronic shutter you get in different situations rolling shutter effects (e.g. bending). Therefore the A1 is the universal work horse for everything (landscape, sport, wildlife, portrait, etc.).

If you use the mechanical shutter you (I) don’t haven’t seen any rolling shutter. I bought the 7RV in addition to my A7RIII (kept it as backup) for best image quality & handling (especially in the menu with touch operation) instead of the A1 and was even in sports events not disappointed. The AF system is awesome and the fully articulating LCD screen is the best since A77II / A99. To be honest, if there will be a A1MK2 with the new menu, the screen and the global shutter and hopefully the base ISO 100 with all the functions of the A7RV I’ll switch one more time even if the resolution would be a litte bit smaler at 50Mp.

@@duffy2512 With mechanical shutter you have (I) less FPS and (II) noise and (III) mechanical time limitation. I guess my mechanical shutter might already be dead with the number of pictures I've already taken. Also it is NOT blackout free. Therefore that isn't a valid option. The A1 has already the new menu although the old menu system I liked even better. And I practically don't use the menu at all as you can configure a lot of buttons for normal work. And you also have "My Menu" which is great for your favourites.

@@gerhardwiesinger sorry but his is bullshit! Yes you may reach the lifetime of your mechanical shutter (if you just use it all the time), but that’s all. I have no decrease of the FPS or increase of noise by just using the mechanical shutter. I don’t say using the mechanical shutter is an option for anyone, but from the photographical view there is no disadvantage. I also don’t say that the A1 is bad, it is still one of the best cameras on the market, but it was not my joyce.

@@duffy2512 Nothing is bullshit. Everyhting can be proven. There is: (I) Mechanical shutter is NOT blackout free, (II) 30fps with electronics shutter vs. 10fps with mechanical shutter. Sony A1 shutter is rated with 500k. I'm already over that number and my camera might already be dead. And also reselling value is much lower with a worn out mechanical shutter. And with the Sony A7R5 you have to use the mechanical shutter to avoid rolling shutter effect. With Sony A1 Stacked Sensor you can always use the electronic shutter. Therefore a camera without stacked sensor (or global shutter) isn't a real option for a photographer which photographs moving subjects.

When the A1II comes out, integrated grip or not, it will definitely be an amazing camera. There is no need to get all bent out of shape as to whether someone calls it "Flagship", "Professional" or bambi.

When was the last time you picked up and shot with a Sony body? None are slow... some are complex...but that is because they are powerful and very flexible... still once you have them setup, they are fantastic.

@@silvestrocrino3256 - almost every day... as a sony shooter a65 & a6000 for more than 10 years and in a mixed camera brand photo amateur group I try other bodies... and see the advanced speed fps ot the other brands for less than sony is asking... Canon r6ii with 40 fps for 2300$ here and sony with an a1 for over 6000$ here... could buy some good lens for the diff...

@@macbaar6073 ... the A65 is from 2011... the A6000 from 2014... Things have advanced quite a lot in capabilities, quality, performance since those cameras were released. You can not judge Sony imaging based on using 10 and 13 year old cameras. As to prices, a Sony and A7VI can be had for $2498, so not much difference in price. It gives you 33mp at 10 frames per sec vs the Canon r6ii's 24mp at 12fps with shutter. How fast either of these cameras shoot with Electronic shutter is not important due to rolling shutter and motion artifacts. You can of-course buy any camera you want, but judging Sony's cameras when you are shooting 10 and 13 year old bodies is wrong.

Slow, as in FPS or operation? Unless you need those high FPS Sony is tough to beat. Nikon’s AF except for the Z8/9 is subpar, and Canon has no 3rd party lens support. All that being said as an a7Riv shooter, I just picked up a Z8 after waiting to see what the a9iii would offer. At the $4k price point it’s a no brainer if you shoot action. Basically if you want to shoot sports with a camera relevant to 2024, you have to pay $6k plus only native lenses to make the most of those bodies.
