Just a friendly reminder to everyone that HDMI 2.1 is not required for Dolby Vision. It is only needed for advanced frame rate features like ALLM and VRR.
@thenonexistinghero6 ай бұрын
Didn't they essentially change the definition in such a way that all HDMI from 2.0 is now 2.1. Though that's just definitions, having a fake 2.1 won't help you with stuff that requires real 2.1 obviously. That being said, for Dolby Vision you can even use HDMI 1.4 for movies and the like. Well, outside of that Will Smith movie that runs at 60 fps on a 4K blu-ray. For gaming at 60 fps in 4K with Dolby Vision you do need HDMI 2.0. And for higher fps than that you need 2.1 and also for variable framerates. Even then I think the limit of current cables and ports max out at 60 fps at 8K (but it's pretty pointless to game at those resolutions for the coming years. All but just a few people are even able to notice a difference between 8K and 4K when it comes to normal viewing distances for regular-sized TV's. You'd be looking at 100+ inch TV's if you want to actually notice a difference.

A lot of reviews say the lack of 2.1 ports isn’t a big issue for most people, but it is for me and not sure if this is a deal breaker or not. If I was to get a HDMI switch, would the TV save the picture settings I set up in each HDMI input or would it just use the same settings and I would have to change each time to my liking depending what I was using? I’m assuming as the switch would be plugged into HDMI 1 on the tv, it would use these same settings whether I was watching SDR or HDR, movies or cable? Or am I talking rubbish ?

Easy solution. Either don't subject yourself to news channels for 10 hours a day or buy a diff type of TV. Even LCDs are subject to burn in watching static images or constantly using closed captions (looking at you Applebee's TV).

Two issues on my A95L, 2/3rds of the screen went black when I was switching HDMI inputs. It remained there on other inputs but not on the home screen I had to reboot to correct this. A replacement TV did the same thing. I removed the Firestick (with recast box) from the HDMI input and resolved this issue. A Sony engineer was very interested and supportive. The 2nd issue is the very slow switching to ATSC 3.0 channels, typically 13 seconds. Hopefully this will get resolved in a firmware update. Still love the picture so I'm keeping it.

Rtings, question for the team: When a TV hdr peak highlight is different at 3%, vs at 10%., let's say 500 nit difference, what do you set your hdr game calibration to? The 3% nit value or 10%? If you set it to the 3% nit value, will it clip the medium sized highlights, but if you set it too low, you wont use the high brightness from small highlights? Whats the tradeoff your team recommends?
@thephantom90806 ай бұрын
I have the same question as well! I think based on hdtv test recommendation for the A95L, due to the lack of HGIG support on sony tvs, you should first turn off hdr tone mapping then use the hdr calibration (all the way down for dark as tjis is oled, and until the sun disappears for bright highlights which should take 17 clicks from the bottom for the A95L). As turning hdr tone mapping off without the option for HGIG, you will be undertraking the PQ EOTF curve but the reason for this calibration is to reach the clipping point, after that turn hdr tone mapping to gradation prefered which should track the curve as best as possible (given no HGIG support).

5grand is just crazy. 77 inch Samsung S 90c Qoled is less than half that price for slightly weaker image processing and slightly less image accuracy. Two things that I guarantee you personally would not notice unless you have both screens side-by-side showing duplicate content. Most people are not watching up scaled content these days. If you are in the know of these high-end TVs, you’re most likely streaming high quality content more than 50% of the time. Sony is charging this much for top shelf processing chips at a price that is far beyond normal profit margins.

The G3 was $4500 at launch (I'm including the additional $200 stand/foot in that figure since that is what it cost me). There has always been a Sony tax so launching @ $500 more vs. G3 was fairly reasonable when you look at it. Especially with it being QDOLED vs WOLED. The price will come down eventually, like it did for the G3 and S95C. Samsung and LG had their chance to scalp us early adopters.. can't blame Sony for doing the same can you?

@@martinchitembo1883 I've only listened to it through my surround sound system. I briefly heard it without the surround system but I'm so used to my surround system that anything would not appeal to me especially since I watch in a large room with 10foot ceilings. Not sure who this TV is for in some ways. Best at low content like cable (who still uses this?), and has a deal-breaking amount of HDMI 2.1 ports. Better they invested in fixing that over the always mediocre speakers on TVs. So you’ll spend a considerable amount on a TV that’s the best sure, but is also stuck in the past. Very strange.

@RTINGSdotcom6 ай бұрын
Both of these TVs perform really similarly in our tests and it really comes down to personal preference and what you plan to use them mostly for! The G3 is the brighter OLED, it can reach a higher peak brightness in HDR and performs better in SDR when bright content takes up a large portion of the screen. However, the LG G3's HDR brightness drops quite a bit in Game Mode, while the S95C maintains its brightness well in that mode. The S95C officially supports 4k @ 144Hz, giving it the edge over the 120Hz G3. The S95C can output much brighter colors overall, so, typical of Samsung panels, its colors will be 'punchier' than the G3's. and with its wider color gamut, the S95C will be the more vibrant TV in most cases!

@@craiglyons2314I went this route for an older LG that I lost the stand legs for. Cheap solution and definitely recommend it 👍. I hear yuh though.. I always love when a TV has a center stand that way u can set it up on almost anything.
@moniquemonet9826 ай бұрын
Keep in mind, the s95c for example actually didn’t stand straight with its centre stand, my 55” tilted down to the right, not to mention the screen was warped in the back. Needless to say it went back and I am looking forward to the a95l… the “end of screen feet stand” mean it should at least be straight.
