Hi Patrick, this Sunday 19-2-23, I took some photos of my favourite young up comming soccer player in Melbourne. Was full overhead sun on a synthetic grass surface lots of glarely light , so I used the P11 profile as you suggested and it worked a treat! re Linden

Thank you for posting this Patrick, I found it extremely helpful. I’ve just received my A1 and have to say I was not looking forward to setting it up given the amount of bad press Sony menus have received from some reviewers. I really don’t know where these people are coming from - this camera is far more intuitive than my (now sold) Nikon D850. And, the custom menus/buttons offer a fantastic amount of personalisation. Anyone worrying about switching systems, really need not. What a fantastic piece of kit. Only recently found your channel and really enjoying it.

hey Patrick, we met when you were doing a demo trip for the (at the time) new A9 at Henry's here in Toronto. Getting myself an A1 next week, and I really enjoyed your video. I was a bit surprised to see that you're not using any of the memory preset banks. Nice thing about the camera is that you can set it up to suit your needs. Thanks again for your efforts, always great to hear someone tell it straight and that tip about the profile is definitely something I want to test. It looks like a great feature.

Hello Patrick! I hope you are well. Thank you for the above presentation. It helped me change some settings for my a7r4. This morning, I was the one which asked about seeing ISO when under 1000. Separately, love the suggestion about ADOBE. Last year, i started with C1 and there is such a positive difference with colors from LR. And, bc of you I was on a trail of Pr and decided for 3 three month trial for FC. For Ps, I have to test Affinity. I really push PS. Thank you. a new subscriber.

Thank you for sharing these settings. The A1 is my first Sony camera purchase. While following your recommendations after pulling my camera out of the box, I noticed my camera would not allow me to change some settings like changing AF to Tracking Flexible Spot M. Then I realized I had it in AUTO mode with my 24-105 F4 Sony lens. Was your mode set to MANUAL? I usually shoot in Shutter Speed mode; however, I wonder why AUTO mode doesn’t allow for the AF changes?

Anu suggestions on changing the display quality? I have a lens on the a1 and it doesn't give me an option to choose anything

Any advice for extended the battery life of this camera? Compared to my A7iii, the battery life is atrocious.

It’s so refreshing to see a professional say they shoot jpeg. Fact of the matter is if you’re able to expose the image correctly in camera you don’t need raw. Raw can save your ass but you can learn if you’re in a situation where shooting raw might save you vs a situation where you’re likely to get very close to what you’re aiming for. Raw in some cases is just an unnessicary waste of sd card and ssd hard drive space

I changed to sensitivity 5 fro soccer games and it was great , thank you!!!!!!!!! for wildlife I using for my eagles fishing otherwise will focus in the water

Thanks for this video! 21:33, Aperture Drive in AF: Standard might be better, need to test, the help guide says this: "When [Focus Priority] is selected, sound from the aperture drive may be audible, or the aperture effect may not be visible on the monitor. Also, the continuous shooting speed may become slower or the screen may flicker. To avoid these phenomena, change the setting to [Standard]."

Excellent video (and videos). Just a quick question/verification. Your reasoning for setting to 5 (in responsiveness) is because your are simply trying to get the subject (ANY subject) in the center of your frame in focus, correct? If you were trying to maintain focus on a specific individual, I would assume you would change to 1 or 2, correct?

Hi, Patrick! Thank you so much for the helpful and informative video! One thing that I'm confused on -- I'm a former Back Button AF photographer. It was fantastic on my old Nikon DLSRs. Now that we've got this great Sony Tracking, I don't understand what BB-AF is still doing for me? I feel like my thumb is just resting on AF-ON instead of my index finger half-pressing, but it feels no longer necessary. Am I missing something? TY!

Pat when you shoot arena sports and there are multiple photographers how is the strobe priority determined for each photographer, might be a good video?

This is better than watching someone on the same subject for hour and half and still come away with nothing.

Nice work - don't have the A1 and will maybe upgrade from my A9 to A9 II but will you cover how the A1 low light image quality is for indoor sports compared to A9II? I also have the 7R4 and when going over 1600 the noise starts due to the 61MPs - being the A1 is 50MP I would expect the A1 to be similar to the A7R4 and not as good as the A9II using high ISO in High School gyms without strobes.

Hi. Great video. For some reason I cannot get tracking: expand spot bc it states this operation or setting not available as follows: focus mode DMF. I went to focus section and cannot find anything with DMF. Is there a fix for this? Thx

Patrick I shoot rodeos but am starting to get into more sports. My question should I get for my next lense the 200-600 or the 100-400? For rodeos I’m using the tamron 70-180 and it’s works great but want a little more reach but want to buy the one that will grow with me I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. Does the tracking sensitivity only apply when you are actual tracking modes in the camera or in all modes ?

I wish you could tell us if you use shutter or aperture plus ISO (minimum/max) for action/wildlife/dogs running...

Hi Patrick, first of all thank you for the info. If I may just offer a few corrections; - S-Cinetone isn’t a profile that offers more dynamic range, Slog3 is the profile for that. However, what it is known for is having a slighter lower black level. This increases the contrast in the lower luminance areas, it can also roll of the highlight tones a little better. However, like I say, it doesn’t increase the dynamic range. I’m also a little confused that these profiles are being mentioned by yourself for stills, as they are made for video, previously Sony have the creative profiles for stills, has this now been replaced in the A1?? - definitely better quality using the 4:2:2 option ;-) this is to do with chroma sub sampling and is a higher quality than 4:2:0. Although that doesn’t confirm which option is 10bit colour depth. Thanks again, I’m very lucky to be one of the eager photographers that have the A1 on preorder, looking forward to making use of it! :-)

Patrick, what body produces a better image when cropped in to 300% - A7r4 or A1 ?

Great video! Clarification on the HEIF 4:2:0 and 4:2:2… that refers to the chroma subsampling within the compression, in which case 4:2:2 has more color data than 4:2:0. A RAW file has no chroma subsampling meaning it’s 444 which is full pixel data. Hope that helps!

Solved my question at 27:00 about the auto viewfinder brightness switching. Yesterday I noticed the “exposure” changing depending on if I were pointing into the sky or into the trees and I could not figure out why. Those sneaky engineers, haha.

Absolutely loved the video tutorial. Great explanation of the important features in sports photography. Only one "concern". You keep referring to the inability to access certain settings because there is no lens attached. Just wondering, why you never at some point attached a lens so we could see those settings. Otherwise, really enjoyed this!

Patrick how is possible that a bonafide sports shooter AND Sony artisan like you, gets Sony's new flagship sports camera a week after Gomez and Morticia Northoftruth to review? Bad management decision at Sony HQ!, they give this camera to know nothing youtubers who are not even decent photographers and don't understand the complexity of Sony's focus system at all

If you use AF-C Priority Release for 30fps, you might missed following focus and get blur photos. Jared polin doesn't like Jpeg and he might hate jpeg shooter.

AF Area registration , if you do not used you are losing a lot of benefit of the Sony system, I use all the time one button and change the focus from wide to spot for sample in a fly
