I have never used a really posh video camera. Stills cameras, yes, but not video. The main reason is that I never want to lug an expensive camera around with me outdoors and I don'y like lugging something heavy around with me. So more often than not, I use a GoPro; especially when going abroad because it takes up so little room.
This video is just an example of what can be done with the camcorder. They're kind of out of date these days with people all using DSLR cameras, but I really like their convenience, ease of use and above all their cheapness!
I bought the cheapest at around £175. Half the price of a GoPro and in some respects, it's actually better.
So this is for you if you'd like to get into video on a small budget and still retain some control over the picture. I'm showing some of the advantages with a little demo video tacked on the end where I literally sat in just two spots by a pond and used the zoom lens to do the legwork for me!
If you ever consider a cheap camcorder, please use the links below to help this channel continue to develop. They are affiliate links and so cost you no more but allow me to buy something else to demo on KZfaq for another video.
Sony CX405 - amzn.to/3gt5S0A
Sony CX450 - amzn.to/2Pc3qjd
Sony CX625 - No longer on Amazon
All three of these cameras can be bought online. In the UK, Argos have had some good deals on the CX450
Sony ax53 - amzn.to/39LC4d3
SIRUI 3T-35 Table Top/Handheld Video Tripod with Ball Head - amzn.to/30fAJYR
Adapter rings - amzn.to/3gl8LRn
The Sirui tripod is excellent. Not cheap but solid and counterbalances the camera. It works as a tabletop tripod, short pistol grip, longer pistol grip and as a shortish selfie stick. You can also buy spare plates to enable all of your cameras to be quickly attached to it.

This is a quick overview of 4 camcorders from Sony with a cx450 demo. In the links below, I have listed what can still be bought from Amazon. Please use them if you are considering any of the bits I’m using since they are afilliate links and help my channel and cost you no more. Sorry for the lobster look at the start. I was sitting under a red umbrella with the white balance set of the daylight and didn’t want to do it all again because being old, I’d never remember what I said!! I choose my camera according to what sound facilities I want so ... Cx405 with a separate recorder. (Very light and mobile) Cx450 with lavalier. (Light. No hotshoe on camera but there is an input) Cx625 with shotgun mic or wireless mic. Also lavalier. Ax53 mostly at home because of its size and weight. With any mic. Often use studio mic or shotgun mic. Adapter rings - amzn.to/3fmf59Q Sirui tripod - amzn.to/33fTVb2 With video, the more I develop, the more I realise that it’s not just the picture, but the story that is important, so I made a demo using the cx450 just sitting in two positions by the local pond to demonstrate how a zoom lens and a reasonable camera produces such a wide variation of shots from a fixed position which makes for a great memory video after being out and about or on holiday for instance.

Super video, and I think you make the point very well that camcorders are very much overlooked these days. One point I would make is the ease of use compared to an SLR, and cost of lenses ! I've got both and find myself using either my Sony camcorder or the Panasonic V750 camcorder more often than not.
@iancraig
@iancraig 4 жыл бұрын
Spot on, Alan. They are incredibly quick and easy to grab a shot. The ease of use is a big thing when you’re out and about. The only thing that isn’t so good about the cheaper ones (and even more expensive ones) is the size of the sensor. I guess having a small sensor makes them easier for companies to whack on massive zoom ranges. I over demonstrated the zoom. It was too close and as seen on the video, it goes a bit blocky. So care is needed with the small sensor size. However, comparing them to the mini cameras like GoPro for general videoing, they stand up really well and honestly, while I was out in the sun, I could see the screen easily while videoing and had a little more control over the exposure. They also record forever and don’t seem to overheat. So they have their uses, but I think they have dropped out of vogue and as someone mentioned to me in a comment ... ‘middle aged man with a camcorder’..... At least he was calling me middle aged! I’m 66, and don’t really care about my image!!

Thanks Bob. The pond os a lovely place to go. The people living around it are very lucky. I always worry about the animals because in fact, they are so tame. The sheep is a daft old thing who follows me around like a dog every time I see him. I often worry about poachers who do occasionally visit. Same for the light coloured ducks. They follow me and I have noticed that one is now missing. The dogs are a couple of saddo dogs. They’re kept as ‘ratters’. They go for rats which can be a problem in the country. As guard dogs, they’re rubbish as you can see! You can easily bribe them with kindness!!! They know me now though because they see me nearly every day. They try to keep up the pretence of being guard dogs but soon calm down and want to play .....

There are too many people with DSLR's out there who don't know how to get the best from them and continually produce poor pictures on them because they often don't know what settings to use really. Excellent, Ian. I use two Sony R800 camcorders to make videos at a shooting range, one on the target and one on the pistol or shooter. Both subjects are stationary. Then I use a small audio recorder and lav mic on me to record all I say or do at both locations. What I love about camcorders is that I can set them up on tripods, start recording, and they will run for nearly two hours with small files without card or battery changes. I can sync up all three tracks very quickly in post, gun shots are as good as hand claps, then edit out all the dead time to make a 2-5 minute video from an hour's worth of footage and sound. I don't have to start and stop the cameras at all, so I can concentrate on shooting instead of video. My audience couldn't care less whether the video was 4k or 1080. I am always in good light outdoors. The R800 has hdmi out as well as a microphone jack so I can use wireless hdmi transmitter and receiver also at longer distances if I want to see the target from the shooter position. I can also use these as webcams but low light performance is not good. The prices shot up during lockdown but are returning to the more normal $200-$230 range in the US now. I may buy a backup in the Fall. Just in case someone shoots one. They aren't bulletproof!
@iancraig
@iancraig 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you’ve basically summed up how I feel about them. All too often, people buy cameras because their specs are massive or they’re worried about their image. I couldn’t care less. I just want videos that tell a story or have a satisfying structure that captures the audience. No one, other than a ‘nerdy’ type is going to analyse the picture unless it’s a boring video. My opening shots are red. Big deal. I was sitting under a bright red umbrella with blazing sun coming through. So the camera showed what it saw. 4K is the new hd I guess. For me, the editing, file size etc is not yet worth the cost in cameras and computing power. I’m not poor, but I do consider the usage and end target. I’m watching on an hd TV or on KZfaq. Does that warrant 4k at the cost? I guess if you’re a techie type, it does but mostly, for me, it’s theoretical. We’re talking about a £220 camera here. Less than a GoPro. Better dynamic range. Better exposure control. Almost as light. Big screen where you can see the picure plainly. A massive zoom range. It takes massive files and keeps its cool. I love them. The video content is more important. I have seen so many poor videos taken on much better equipment than mine. For me, sound quality is important. That seems to define what is perceived as a good or poor video if the content doesn’t hit the spot! I recently completed a 12 part music series for kids totally on camcorders. We have a music business and during lockdown, I had to film and edit one 25 minute episode every week. That included music composition, recording and mixing and filming with a soundtrack. I used an ax53, the CX450 and for outdoor shots, either an Osmo pocket, Action or GoPro. Sharp as anything because I lit it properly. These cheap cameras are capable of much more than people give them credit for.

The cx450 is a good value camcorder. I like the fact that it has a mic input, although no way of fixing the mic to it. No coldshoe. That means it’s a lavalier so the mic is close or a mic on a lead, again getting you to place the mic close. It stops you being lazy and plonking a mic on top of the camera! It’s small so is really handy. Generally, I use this one in preference to my Action although it isn’t as small.

Recently I was reading about the Dogma 95 movement in filmmaking and they all made interesting films using entry level camcorders..
@iancraig
@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
There is something rather nice about the Dogma 95 movement. Kind of compares with ‘minimalist’ music in a way although they don’t limit the amount of material that they use. There’s a lot to be said about ‘story telling’ rather than relying on effects. Straight forward with a focus on narrative and direction of the video or film. All too often these days, people worry about how to shoot with drones, effects, and how to get a video to look ‘glitzy’, when underneath it all, there is something lacking in the film itself. One of my real ‘hates’ on KZfaq actually is the way that some smack in a load of ‘b roll’ footage, normally in slow motion and that footage has nothing to do really with what the video is actually about. Kind of sticking in some glitzy filler with no real purpose. Normally, they think that they’re giving the impression that it’s this new thing ..... cinematic! I often go back to much older movies myself because they often tell stories much better than modern remakes. There’s a lot to be said for camcorders. They’re built for video and they actually do the job pretty well. More than once now though, I have had messages from people saying that they wouldn’t like to be seen out and about holding a camcorder. They associate it with tourism. They are missing a trick because these camcorders get the picture with a minimal of fuss, leaving you able to create a video that has some sense of direction rather than continually worrying about settings ....

They are so easy to use Andre. Big screen. Bright. Menu at your fingertips. Pretty light for vlogging. Stabilisation is pretty good. Even better; even the cheap ones give a good picture. For the next one, I’ll use the bottom of the range one .... the cx405! Thing is, people hopefully watch the video and don’t even consider what camera you used! Story is more important.

@iancraig
@iancraig 2 жыл бұрын
No. Never superceded. The ax100 or ax700 are a good step up from it. The ax53 only does 4k at 25fps. Really annoying because I often video at 4k 50fps and render at 1080 50fps for Tv. On KZfaq, recently I’ve been videoing in 4k 25fps and rendering at 1080 25fps. Gives me zoom capability without moving the camera.

Ian Great video. I currently own the cx405 which I use to video my daughter's soccer (football) games here in Florida. The problem is when it rains. I would like to add a step filter but there are no threads. That way I can add a rain cover without it falling over the lens. The cx450 would be a great idea. Can you tell me the size of the filter closest to the lens. Also do you get vignetting with multiple rings? Thanks for your videos.
@iancraig
@iancraig 2 жыл бұрын
The cx450 filter size is 37mm. The rings flare outwards so they don’t get in the way. You can glue one ring with a thread to the cx405 and then use the others as normal if you want. I would also put the camera in a plastic bag with a hole for the lens/filter. Held on with a rubber band just behind the lens for when it really rains.

I think it will run as long as you like. I would plug it in though. These camcorders aren't like DSLRs with a 30 minute limit. Not certain how a very long video would record .... whether it would split itself or make a long video. Long time back, I used the 405 to record a show and I think it just went on and on. I used 3 cameras and jumped between them so didn't need a full video with one shot. For a gig, I would use a separate recorder for sound.

I don't stick with one particular mic. To set it up, I use an adapter that fits into the Sony hotshoe so the mic fits on and is raised. The Sony cameras only take 3.5mm plugs. Great video Ian, I have a sony ax53 a great camcorder but I don't use it nearly enough. Liking the tripod can I ask what's the max height it extends too and would it support the AX53, when I do a piece to camera I sit at a table and I'm wondering if this would be suitable for putting the AX53 on stood on the table instead of getting my full size tripod out , I think I'll be putting one in my Amazon basket. The setup you are using for a lens hood can the same thing but used for the AX53 as I've been looking for something suitable. One thing I found with my AX53 is the screen's not good in bright sunlight, and the flippy door on the hot shoe cover makes it a fiddle to fit a non Sony Mic, I've got a little extension accessory also in my Amazon basket just waiting for the next time I place an order. Stay safe best wishes Jon.

Thanks Jon. The Sirui is fantastic. It does support the ax53. It’s not cheap but very substantial which is why I use it. It’s not the lightest because it is made from metal but actually, it helps with stabilisation because it counteracts the weight of the camera; especially when you hold it above the legs and extend them straight out, when I use lightweight plastic selfie sticks, they’re so light that the camera swings about! Extension is quite short. Only about a couple of feet but enough for a self shot. Further away, I just put it on the floor on its legs. If you get one, it’s a good idea to get some plates for other cameras. Two reasons.... they’re small so you don’t notice them left on your camera and quick to attach. But also, the replacement plates have a grip ring on them where the stick one needs a screwdriver to get it on tight so only really good for one camera. The extra plates aren’t that expensive, but it is actually a brilliant mini support. Oh .... I forgot, the adapter ring trick does work on the ax53. It works will all cameras that have a screw thread. The beauty of it is that you can slightly alter the lens hood depth to match whatever filters you might be using. I’ll put a link in my description to the rings. They’re great. Link is there now in my description. Thanks - you jogged my memory so the Sirui and rings are there now!!

@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing Paul. The cx40 is a great little camera. It’s pretty sharp. Bear in mind that it only offers ‘semi-manual’ like all of the cx and ax range. That means you can only adjust aperture, or shutter, but not both. Having said that, the exposures are really very good so I tend to use it on shutter mode and allow the aperture to deal with exposure. Otherwise it has a menu thing to lower or raise the exposure if you want to. No coldshoe so it’s a lavalier mic camera really although there’s nothing to stop you using an L bracket for a mictophone. I think it’s a very nice little camera for home and vlogging because it’s also pretty small and light.

Hi Mr Ian. First, thanks for so much great information and great detailed explanation. I have been looking for information that eludes me. I own a HDR CX- 130. Before that a cheap Hi 8mm and then a nice Hi-8 in storage. My point is, I turn 69 in 3 weeks and my eyes get worse every day. I can't see the flip out screen to frame and shoot video DOES ANYONE KNOW an affordable Sony Handycam that still has an eye piece? I assume that is what you call it. My old cameras, both have eye pieces. Thanks for any info.

Thanks Mike. There are no Sony ones until you get to the ax53 which isn’t cheap. I must admit at the age of 67 myself, I often wear my reading glasses and look over the top for long distance! My long distance vision is better than short, but not brilliant. I just fold up the reading glasses and stick them in a shirt pocket when not videoing. The only camera I have with a viewfinder is the Canon M50 which still isn’t cheap, but its viewfinder isn’t as good as the ax53. Try using the DJI Pocket 2. That’s a joke for my eyes with its tiny screen!!! Small screens often cause me to make mistakes like I did with a recent video I did showing Osmo Action profiles. I filmed at 240FPS instead of 50!! Couldn’t see it on the screen...... They don’t cater for us lot. Another idea is to buy a small compact and add a viewfinder onto the back. I’m demonstrating one here .... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8qnhtSgzbzXeKM.html

Is there much difference between these two (besides price!) Which one would you recommend? Thanks again
@iancraig
@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Maree. The CX625 is a more future proof camera in that it can take a microphone so audio massively improves. I generally ise the cx405 for a lower profile in public but retain a fairly good picture and the Cx625 when I don’t mind about having a higher public profile and want really good sound. If you do get one, try underexposing by half to one stop. They all have a tendency to bring everything up a bit high and highlights get pushed out,
@iancraig
@iancraig 2 жыл бұрын
@Laven The internal mic on the Sony cx405 would capture more of you as long as the camera is closest to you. The further away from you it is, less of you it picks up. For best audio, a separate microphone would work way better but the cx405 only has its own internal mics, so is a slight compromise. Sound is ok though.

Hey Ian, I hope you can help me. I am filming mostly skate videos and I read many reviews and can't decide now between the cx405 and cx625. What would you recommend me for these purposes? Is there a big difference when it comes to stabilisation? I would like to add a fish eye lens from time to time and I would have to use tape to adjust it on the 405, but that seems to be the only con right now,..
@iancraig
@iancraig 6 ай бұрын
The cx625 is a nicer camcorder and has the moving lens assembly for stabilisation. If you are skating yourself, I would use an Action 4. If you are videoing from the audience, then the cx625 might work well with its zoom but low light performance isn’t great. That’s because of the small sensor and it quickly becomes noisy. It’s a fairly cheap camera though so I guess you get what you pay for. Really, the ax33, 43 or 53 might be better. I use the ax53 which allows control over the iso or amount of gain so you can lower noise to some extent in camera.

The Sony input is pretty good for audio. It's a 3.5mm stereo plug so you can send stereo in for music. So whatever you output from to 3.5 will be great. If you need a long run, it 'might' be noisy and pick up rf because it's not a shielded xlr, but you could run a long xlr to xlr and put a short patch into camera if noise is an issue.

How do these cameras fair indoors or in low light situations??
@iancraig
@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
Up to a point they are pretty good. You have no control over the ISO though so once light really starts to drop, you will be introducing a load of noise, just like any other camera and these camcorders have small sensors. Pushing a cheap camcorder in low light conditions isn’t really the best thing to do since they’re not designed for that really. The ax53 is better than the others in low light though, but you pay for that; it’s a £650 camera. For low light performance (proper) I’m using an F1.4 lens into another camera. That’s unfortunately the case for all cameras. You need a wide lens and that’s it. Camcorders are designed for ease of use and quickness in operation. Especially these cheap ones. An F1.4 lens for my camera cost £350 just for the lens! You pay a lot of money for good low light performance really. Having said that, I can easily use these indoors with no extra lights and they do pretty well. Better I think than a GoPro.

Probably. But if you have to use an editor to string it all together, might as well adjust the colour too. Most cameras will produce a ‘flatter’ result so they are able to cope with varying lighting conditions. Then you can tweak to taste later.

@iancraig
@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
I have 4 camcorders and without a doubt, the cheaper ones do really well and do keep costs down. The only thing is with the cheap ones, there is no audio input, so you are left with on board mics or a separate recorder. So cheap cam £200. Recorder £90. However, excellent results even on internal mics which I tweak in post. The bigger camcorder is expensive, but very good. Excellent for beginners because it is actually hard to get a bad exposure! I flit between the camcorders and the GoPro 5 and 7, and of course the Osmo Action and Pocket. I also now have a Sony ZV-1 which is an amazing camera. I tend to choose according to what sound I want and where I’m going. (Visibility and all that because some people play up to cameras outside on the street) Last week, I was photo bombed twice. One shot I couldn’t do again. I was shooting stuff for tourist board and one of them was quite annoying because I couldn’t easily do the shot again. (Kitesurfers) The best compromise in my camcorder collection in the CX450. Great picture and it actually has a mic input. No mount for a shotgun, but great for lavaliers or just put it onto an L bracket to hold a mic. That is a cheap setup for sure. You also need to learn how to expose for good results though. Generally, I find that they expose too high so I end up lowering it. Same for the GoPro. I tend to underexpose by .7 or 1 stop depending on the weather. GoPros blow out the picture very easily and so do the cams!

Hi. It sounds to me like you may have a slower computer than necessary for video. You could try setting a lower bitrate on the Sony. I think there is a choice in the menu. If that runs well then it is probably the computer. In that case, go back to a higher bitrate and render as normal, just trying to ignore the choppiness. If the software does it, try using proxies. These are low res copies of the originals that the computer uses to edit, but switches automatically to the high res version for render. One programme that works well on slow computers is Magix Movie Studio. It seems to use less resources to run. Another giveaway for a slow computer is render time. If it takes a long time to render the video, your computer is slow. I use a newish laptop for editing. It just about copes with 4k 60p but if I slap in a load of effects, it stutters. So I make the video first. Run it to check and then edit/colour correct etc afterwards before rendering. In other words, just put the video together first before doing anything else in order to make it easier on your computer.

That really depends on whether you want to use a mic or not. They are basically the same camera, but the 450 has a mic input. So you could use a lavalier or get an L bracket and mount a shotgun mic. So the 450 offers better sound via an external mic. I think the 405 is slightly quieter on internal mic than the 405 which seems to pick up mechanical noise from the focus system.

Interesting video. Thanks. I am interested in a camcorder mainly for travel and on holiday, also some family videoing. I am not into creating my own videos and doing lots of editting. However, I do like a good quality image. Back in the day we used a Sony Digital 8 (3 of them as they needed replacing) on high setting and the quality was pretty good, even after digitising it. I guess these are the modern equivalents. The circa-2010 SD card Pansonic we got for a couple of hundred was rubbish in comparison. Now we set our sights on a new camera. I have found in the past that camcorders may last 5+ years but often die after 3 or 4. So, maybe the top one here would be my absolute max. For my needs, there's no point shelling out mega bucks if it dies in a few years. I have a few questions if I may: Would I need an AX53 or would I actually be fine with a 625? Which set of step rings do you use as lens caps? I use lens caps on all my Olympus SLRs, so I know how important this is and I've read that it's hard to find a proper cap that fit these. What about battery life between the AX53 and the 625? If necessary I would buy a second battery. Would I get by in very bright sunlight with the 625 and the screen turned up to max, or would I miss a proper viewfinder? Thanks in advance.
@iancraig
@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
The AX53 is a very superior camera to the 625. However, if you don’t want to edit in order to put videos together but use what you get, I wouldn’t personally go for an ax53. You wouldn’t be getting the best from it. The technology on it would be wasted. It is capable of brilliant results where I’d say the 625 gives you a good overall ‘average’ on auto. I’m suprised you don’t want to edit films. It improves them dramatically. I even used to edit super 8 video back in the late 60’s. Anyway, the rings I use are some bog standard cheapos from Amazon. Battery life is similar on both. I have a big battery on both so they last for ages. Standard batteries have a shorter life. You can see the screen on the 625 in sunlight. It can be turned up, but that shortens battery life even more. The AX53 has more control over exposure so the picture you can get is a lot better than the 625. However, this requires some editing. For instance, I often expose for highlights and then bring up the black or even take it down, in order to get the best contrast; even in bright sunlight. Nothing gets blown out. That gives a breath taking images. My own preference is the ax53. It is a superb camcorder. But, if you just want family videos so quality isn’t the most important thing, then the 625 would be fine. TBH, you get what you pay for and a £200 camera isn’t going to be that great really. I paid over £300 just for a lens!

In the end, I took your advice, Ian, and shelled out for an AX53. In any case, most camcorders are in short supply right now, so this made sense after hours of searching. It looks like a great camera and I took to it straight away. It'll be used a lot of holiday as well as around the house at family events. I have a few quick questions, if that's ok, as you seem to be someone with a lot of experience and there is maybe too much noise out there on what to do with this camera. When I do come to shoot in bright sunlight - say with sea or lots of blue sky, will it tend to blow out, and if so, is the best solution using Exposure Compensation of half or one stop, an ND filter (if so which one?), a lens hood, a polariser, setting white balance away from auto to sunlight etc? Maybe a combo. I've bouight a 55mm UV fileter which will protect and help a tiny bit. On my SLR, I'd use a grad filter and a histogram for bright light, but I am newish to serious camcorders and don't know the best solution here. If I do go for a second battery is the Sony one a must or do you find there are good quality makes elsewhere? I've currently got it set to 4k 100 frames a second and Active stabilisation. I'll try that out. I feel maybe best quality HD maybe easily enough in practise. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

@iancraig 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David. I was wondering what you would end up with. TBH, you’ve really made the best choice because the ax53 is sharp and it has a nice mic preamp. As far as settings go, I would use 100fps for normal video. You would use that for slow motion. I have made a video on settings. Normally, I use 50fps at 1/50th on a tripod or 1/100 when handholding. There are reasons for this since 1/50th gives really nice motion blur but isn’t great for hand holding. Motion blur plus camera shake at 1/50th looks horrible so I up the shutter to 100th as a compromise when hand holding. Leave frame rate at 50. For sun and getting overblown bits this is what I do. I have set the front ring up as exposure compensation. I have zebras turned on. When exposing, I always expose to where the zebras come on and then turn the ring slightly to bring it down. It’s called exposing to the right. In post, you can always alter contrast ranges or the overall brightness of the picture. It works every time! With a histogram, this is the equivalent of having everything to the right on the graph and then in post, you can bring blacks down to what you want. (Or up) For sky, I use a graduated or if it’s sunny, a polariser. I try to avoid white out if I can. Sometimes though, you can’t. Just depends on the brightness. The AX53 is a brilliantly thought out camcorder and you can get fantastic results from it. I prefer using it very often to my Canon m50 because it’s SO quick to set up. Ideal for holidays.

@@iancraig Thanks, Ian. I will experiment with that. I may get it set up nicely for me, but mainly when we are on holiday, I am taking stills with my SLR (Olympus Em1) and it's my wife who is doing the camcorder stuff. I will try to trach her re the zebra. If it's too much fiddling for her, I may try just setting it to sunlight and Exposure comp. Sounds like setting to Shutter Priority and 100th is the way to go as we will be shooting hand held 99.99% of the time. Even moving indoors this should be fine most times. Maybe 100 frames a second at HD rather than 4k will be enough? Or even 50 frames a second at HD? Plus then you get the full camera stabilisation, which i think you don't on 4k. Any battery thoughts or is this really an individual thing? If I get two hours out of the one we get with the camera, that may be enough anyway at the rate we shoot, but a spare can be handy.

Well, I'm 67 and si far, not too bad for me with the joystick tbh. There should be no difference in size ratios between 60p and 60i. The only difference is the scanning. Interlaced (I) just shows half of the screen, every other line and then the other half, every other line. Progressive shows all of the lines in one go. I would suggest sticking with progressive which gives a proper, full HD. Size ratios should be exactly the same. By 'burly' do you mean 'fat'?

Oh, ok. You're seeing the interlacing. These days, interlacing isn't generally used. The main UK TV stations still use it but that's more to do with bandwidth and sending a signal out efficiently. Interlaced HD is actually half of HD on each frame so not actually as 'HD' as progressive. Personally, I never use interlaced.

Difficult to choose. Panasonic also make some nice little cameras. I stuck with Sonys just because I am so used to their menu systems and all four of my cameras arevery similar in the way that they’re set up. Ease of use is a major factor for me because when you’re out and about, being pushed to get footage quickly, you just don’t want to be playing with menus. I will be demoing the cx405 next video.

I'm interested in the Sony CX450 it's brilliant for me it would do everything I go hiking and camping and having a plug-in mic socket makes it even better. Keep doing video on this low cost camcorder like you say you get a lot for you money. @iancraig
@iancraig 7 ай бұрын
Hi Colin. I can’t remember exactly what I was using for this one. I tend to revolve around a few, one no longer available from Sony. The thing about software is that so many recommend these massive programmes that have a complex learning curve and some cost a lot or you have to subscribe. I hate all that and just want something simple and fast. I don’t need bells and whistles software so I use Magix Movie Studio mostly at the moment. They’re all pretty much the same thing tbh and a lot more important are your videoing and editing skills in the way that you put videos together. The software has no bearing on that. Some of the free editing packages are too basic, but I find Magix a nice mix of dead simple with basically useful editing features. Nothing special, but then, for me, the video content is more important than any software. A long while back, I used to video with NO software involved, other than a free stitch together programme. It’s a great discipline because you learn to plan and take shots with the video in mind. I still do that now. Many people talk about taking a ton of shots and cutting as much as possible in the edit. I rarely cut a ton of shots out. I just don’t take them because I learned way back to plan. I use Epidemic Sounds for music or I record my own music. I’m a retired musician. Sometimes I want to Taylor exactly for my video and other times, just backdrop stuff. These are the cheapest cameras I use, so don’t expect miracles. They’re ok. They do benefit (like most cameras) from sharpening in post. Dead easy to use though and fast to get shots.

The video quality is similar but as you say, there is the added Coldshoe mount on top. There is also a little more in camera control of the picture on the 625. The Sony cx450 if you can still get it or the cx625. My own favourite is the ax53. A cheaper route is to use a separate recorder and use video editing software to sync it. I leave the recorder running and sync video to the audio track, cut the audio track and sync the left over track with the next clip. It sounds convoluted but it’s actually quite easy.

Yes, I do post-edit my videos, since I often record bellydancers in dance videoclips. But all my cameras are photo cameras, and I would like to add an actual video camera to the roster. My current setup is an A77II - with the Rode mic, an A68 and a small RX100 IV for handheld videos with smooth zooms, while the two alphas work on tripods. So I end up doing the sound sync anyways. But if any of my cameras is to be connected to the mic, I would prefer if it could be the video camera, since there will be times I will be recording with only one camera (like in a live show or concert, where I am taking photos and leave the video camera on the tripod alone). I will check on those two cameras. Thanks!

Hello once again! I stop by to let you know I have found a nice 2nd hand camera from Sony, but a very different model (one I didn't even knew it existed). I bought a used HXR-MC50. In fact, should be the MC50E but is really the MC50U (I guess the girl who sold it bought it in the US and came back to Portugal). But the recordings are nice, has a built in mic plus a dedicated mic and mic line-in when I want a better sound, and it lets me change every parameter to Manual setting, if I want to. From ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Focus, just about everything. I'm pleased with this camera, altough it has one detail I do not like: it records 1080i, and I would have prefered a 1080p capable camera. But for the price tag, it was not that bad: less than 200€. On most of them, there is a choice of 25 or 50 fps. 50 is smoother but 25 is more cinema film like. The important thing if you use 25 is to set the shutter at 1/50th or it will look jarring and move the camera less. With 50, it’s way less touchy and you can leave the shutter on auto really. Use 25p or 50p, not 25i or 50i. That is an old tv format for showing smooth pictures on tv at (effectively) 50 1/2 frames per second. Most people use p these days….. progressive video, not interlaced. The camcorders are great for learning video technique. Quite different from stills.

On all of these cameras, I use MP4 at 50mps. 1080p is HD so as long as you’re not cutting in to the picture when editing, it’s fine. AVCHD can be difficult in some editors and footage won’t always play back smoothly with it. As far as editing goes, I always try to get everything right in the camera to avoid unnecessary editing. The worst thing is taking poor footage and trying to fix it in post. You have to remember that all of these cameras are 8 bit so pulling the picture around too much in post will affect the picture quality. Sorry. I’m really glad you didn’t pay for it...... Up to the cx625, they’re pretty similar as far as picture goes. Ax53 is a bigger jump in quality. The 450 is smack in the middle. Between the 405 and 625, the main differences are in audio. 405 only internal. 450 - mic input but no mounting system. 625 mic input and mounting system. 625 also has a few more picture tweaks but quality of picture between those three are pretty much the same. If you think about it, 4 cameras in a 15 minute video isn’t a lot of time which is why it’s a quick overview. I did a separate cx405 but still have the 625 to do. Wasn’t sure if anyone was that bothered tbh which is why I quickly ran through them at the start.

The cx405 is like a ‘sweet spot’ for me. It’s dead cheap. Internal audio. But, picture is nice as long as you tweak sharpness and saturation in post. (I do that with most cameras tbh) The internal audio is done pretty well and again, with boosting in post is perfectly useable. I recently videod a 12 part music series for kids during lockdown. Each episode was 25 minutes and to video, I used all three Sony CX cameras and an ax53 with a separate recorder for sound. I really couldn’t differentiate picture between the CX range in all honesty. The ax53 has a better lens but with the cx range, I think you’re paying more for sound and just minor tweaks as you go up the range. That’s why I really like the 405. It’s quick to get going with no fuss. No real ‘manual’ mode in any of them. They all work ‘semi manual’ but actually that’s a great thing. If you want to control say, the shutter, the aperture looks after itself. So you can really set the shutter speed and let the camera sort out the rest. It’s extremely light and I honestly prefer using it to the GoPro for vlogs. Better screen because you can tilt it and it has relatively good internal sound with a nice zoom.

Now my day is ruined (jusy received it) and the seller day is ruined since I'm returning it package open. Oh dear! I hope you didn’t buy a camera after watching just my video. Before investing in a camera, I always scout around loads of reviews and definitely look at the specs. They give 25 or 50i/p. Or for USA 30/60i/p . That’s consistent with most cheap cameras. I have paid way more for just a lens for for my Canon cameras! These camcorders are dead cheap. I’m guessing you want 24p? The frame rates are in the Sony UK specs …. www.sony.co.uk/electronics/handycam-camcorders/hdr-cx405/specifications I’m also wondering why you feel it’s limited to PAL/NTSC. What system do you use? The cx405 is quite an old model now, but not a relic. It’s also extremely cheap. That’s a bit harsh. It has brought many people into video production due to its cheapness and ease of use. This is a total beginner camera and tbh, most beginners don’t play around with 24p. Even if it did offer 24p, you can’t get much bokeh with this sensor so for ‘cinematic’ video, it’s really the wrong camera.
