Amazing! Just purchased one of these in a charity shop. Not working and this was the first video I found. Managed to reattach the drive belt and all is well. Where can you buy replacement belts if need in the future? Thank you!

There's various suppliers on eBay. One is Malvern seems to be the best

the name is just an abbreviation that supposedly sounded better in the marketing. It came from the old open reel machines that were known as 'tapecorders' after the simple fact that they recorded to a magnetic tape. It's kind of stupid really as many of the catalogues desired them as variations of 'cassettecorder cassette recorder'. They must have sold millions of these 939s, I've seen tons and tons of them.

how do i get to the motor speed control pot for adjustment? just had mine cracked open to try to set it at correct speed (it's actually been playing close to correct speed i think maybe just a lil fast). I didn't realize the PCB comes off like that though, good to know. Also wanted to hear if you had a recommendation on changing out the speaker for something more efficient in both saving power on the batteries and also something that will project better sonically? figured we've come a far way in speaker technology to throw a better driver in there. i use mine pretty regularly for going to the park or the pool/picnics

I've no idea I'm afraid. Is it a pot directly on the rear of the motor? If so, use an insulated tool when adjusting. With regards to replacing the speaker, you need to be rather careful, as more modern speakers tend to have large magnets, to enable more throw. Not what you want in close proximity to your precious tapes! Some efficiency gains could be had from switching the output amplifier to a small class d module, but I suspect the vast percentage of your battery consumption goes on driving the motor.

Maybe they were trying to copy a bit of Star Trek with the Tricorder? According to Wikipedia, the first full--sized toy Tricorder was actually a cassette recorder designed to look like the TV Tricorder.

When you first asked why it was called a corder I wondered if it couldn't re-record ie no erase head or erase bias, but obviously I was wrong.
