I have a similar recorder the Sony TCM-20DV. works well even after many years. I've recorded many hours of my life on it. I agree with someone below me, mine also has the speaker on the door like this one but the magnet isn't powerful. I used to crank up little motors like this on my electric train transformer which I still have. Man the days before youtube.

coondogtheman1234 I have the same one; got it from my mum when she took it home for me (with permission) during an office cleaning. After all these years the belts were still fine, and I only needed to clean the battery contacts (someone left batteries in) to get it fully working again

Just fascinating how you can fix most anything. I hope one day you work on a Denon tape deck. I have one with a dead motor.

I have that same problem with the Sony Walkman WM-EX10 model. Quite common. Motor issues and not the belt. It plays poorly, and sometimes it plays fine - but the motor will eventually stop, and there will be no more FF, RW or Play on the cassette player.

Yup, motors fail left right and center on these.

I like the buttons on that. Nice, solid feel. That has to be one of the damndest sounds ever I have heard from a piece of audio equipment, though.

There should be a second belt and pulley under the PCB on this model. Worth checking if anyone had other problems.

I had to replace the drive belt on this tcm -200dv one screw I removed to clear the drive belt for easier removal and used a real thin dental double hook to put onto tiny brass circular drive and hooked the rest of drive belt over the bigger drive belt wheel.i don't know if I can get another belt to fix in future.ther maybe a noise from circular gears that maybe underneath.

The double normal slide switch on tcm-200dv when slide to double or normal would make gear slipping sounds as well and I also would take tape out to check to see tape was wound smooth and would slap tape down flat helper to even out tape height to help avoid snags especially on 90 minute tapes I preferred 60 or 30 minute if any problems.

Also on the sony tcm-200dv having a maxil 90 minute tape seemed to drag until i used 60 minute cassette.

Probably worn pinch roller. 90 min tape thinner.

By the end of the video it was definately sounding better, when you first put in the music tape after the repair you could still hear a lot of speed fluctuations. I guess the more it runs the more the motor smoothens out.

Yes the oil will polish the contacts in the motor as it runs.

Not liking the idea of the speaker in the door with the magnet next to the tape.

wonder if a shielded magnet would have helped.

It's a shielded magnet, come on, Sony isn't that dumb.

So many portable tape recorders were designed that way, I've owned and still own several that are like that. I never thought of how the magnet on the speaker could affect the tape, but there's certainly potential for something to go wrong. I even have a portable tape recorder that have both the microphone and the speaker on the door. BTW, are you a ham?

I couldn't help but notice that the speaker is mounted in the cassette door! (15:59) I would expect it would erase tapes!

I think that wet motor with WD40 was picking some extra noise/sparking when freshly lubed. It will sound better when dried :) Actually try to extra lube power tool motor and stop/run it - it will get on fire from sparks - tested :)

I actually like it! I have 2 microcassette recorders, but would like one that uses standard compact cassettes. So I can listen to all my old voice tapes without needing headphones. My earliest cassette recorders had heavy flywheels. I still have those. Btw, what about the bottom bearing? I suppose it's more trouble than it's worth to try to get to that one. Can you do anything about the sparking sound besides replacing the motor? Like a capacitor across the leads to the motor? I don't know, some motors have those.

I used to have one now unfortunately it's now garbage which finally been broken to the point the device is completely jammed and can't get the tape out from the console. =(

I wonder if a black o ring could work as a drive belt well if can get the right size and anotter test i like to record a electric guitar tuner note at a 440 pitch if it plays back the same pitch then great.it was said in past to use a tape head demagnetiser on bigger tape recorders maybe so there would not be tape record playback problems to tape itself. ?

The pause button assembly bent can stick and cause slower speeds and not disengate keeping the tape from turning as well tricky and even the drive motor and or gears etc can slip as well well.check batteries and connections and voltage drops as well.

There are alot of standard tape decks with crap flywheels, it has to be heavy to smooth out the fluctuations, designs ruined by penny pinching :-(

Are you sure the noise is not induced by the switching power supply? At the end, when you put back batteries, it look's working . properly...

The spray you use in 8:19 is a contact cleaner or WD40? Thanks a lot for showing us how to do! Regards from Brazil!
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
No it is just good old WD40. Not contact cleaner at all. WD40 does have contact cleaners, but this is just the basic old stuff that you put in frozen locks, and on squeaking door hinges.

Would contact cleaner be of any help to stop the noise from the brushes? The nutrol that you have used in the past seems to be really good stuff.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
Contact cleaner will work temporarily but the oil in it is pretty light. WD40 has a heavier oil that stays after the solvents have evaporated.
