It's sitting on a copper strap because dissimilar metals prevent resonance - they have different resonant frequencies and so cannot resonate as one. Essentially its a damping method.

Absolutely brilliant to see your video.I have 2of these cd players ,one exactly like yours with the red UK badge and one without the UK badge.I wonder if that's why the copper mountings were used,for maybe to cater for the British liking for smooth sounding cd players.I love how well this player is built with quality components ,no wonder it sounds so good .I prefer mine with the filters set to number 1 or 2 for a Really smooth detailed as sound .I will not be getting rid of to these wonderful cd players , especially after your video revealing the high quality components.thsnks very much

I like tear down videos the most, and you're doing awesome detailed videos, you literally removed all screws :D . I hope you keep going with more devices. In this particular cd player we see really high grade audio components all over, not easy to find in these days. Only Marantz latest releases have such audio grade capacitors.

Thank you @fluxcapacitor ! I have planned more videos, but production is very time consuming. Hopefully with time and practice I will manage to release them more often.

Just wanted to say a big thank you in appreciation for all the work you have put into this. I have this CDP since it came out and was always curious about how this special mechanism would work. And now finally I know plus I have seen it working! Top vídeo! But this raised some questions: 1) I am using it as transport with external DAC so I was especially interested in the shot where you can see the wobbling CD. Although the laser mechanism is clearly designed to compensate, I wonder what kind of modifications could be done to minimize this. Heavier weight maybe? 2) regarding the DAC chip if I understood correctly there is no information about anywhere, correct? 3) in what condition was the rubber band that spins the disc? Would it be recommended to replace it after all these years? Thanks again for your time and dedication.

Thank you for watching this video. I'm really appreciate your comment! 1. About the CD wobble. I believe that it's completely normal. CD are not perfect, also it's extremely hard to load it so it's perfectly centred. So don't worry, automatics will always keep laser in focus. 2. Yes, I couldn't find any specs. 3. Rubber band that you are talking about is only drives the sled. There is a separate motor that spins the disc. So if your disc loading mechanism works fine, you don't have to worry about it. My rubber belt was in a perfect condition.

Back in the 80's, balancing and damping materials were sold as aftermarket tweaks. Purpose was to create a more balanced, less wobbly disc. Some of my early CDs still, to this day have these plastic/rubber rings. Some applied around the top perimeter... perhaps 15mm wide, others applied around the outer edge. Sims was one manufacturer.

@@FOH3663 I used some of them rings you put on the top outer edge, cant say they helped but I did try them, they are still attached to my albums now :)

Great video it would be fun to see how you clean the parts what kind of products you use that does not damage the boards and if you make some modifications like more dempening and exceptra.

If you fancy a challenge, I have a Technics RS-A6Z that recently decided it had enough... Taking that apart is a pain, I stopped on the main cover.. These loading systems were quite popular in late 90's, most big names had at least one player with a quirky transport mechanism. Cheers.

This is insanely good implemented video. A pleasure to watch... I have a question, i have the previous model Xe900 which has the same mechanism, but it does not spin and sometime when it spins it does not recognise the CD. The laser seem to light up, and the motor seems to work. However i have a small impression that the mechanism that holds the cd icannot move back and forth (as the laser stays in fixed position). Any further ideas?

Hi, thanks for your feed back, I’m pleased that you liked it. Unfortunately I don’t have this player with me any more. I can suggest you to find a Service Manual, maybe there you will find some troubleshooting tips.

Thanks for a greath video. Do you know how to adjust this player? In the service manual it says that an adjustment terminal TP21 (ADJ) should be used. I cannot find any info on this terminal anywhere. TIA.

Ive just purchased this from a friend (not got it yet) its a silver Sony CDP-XB930 QS, but my friends also has a headphone port on the front I guess yours does not for some reason but same model number. Would you recommend my friend ship it with the puck removed? Do you have any information about what the mechanism does for playback if anything. Can it give better performance with a static laser? Or is it a fancy design with no performance gains 😉
@boredtech
@boredtech Жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe it safer to remove the puck and secure it outside the unit. CDP-XB930 has very interesting design but I don't think that it would do a massive difference. Overall it's is a great player. By the way. I saw a CD player which need the cd to be loaded upside-down. Would love to tear that one down.

@@boredtech I assume that's the Pioneer Stable Platter model. That was so cool when that came out that I went down to my local hifi shop to see that one in person. It also features legato link processing. It had a different sound, but it was not night and day between my current player at the time, which I think was my Philips or Marantz (maybe Technics); my memory is a bit fuzzy now, so long ago. But the Pioneer was super cool to see in person at that time. I never did get one, but a few years later I got a Pionner LaserDisc player, and that had a legato link, so I was able to test it. It was not a massive improvement in sound; it just sounded different. Thanks I will get it shipped with the puck outside the unit.
