When Sony entered the PDA market they chose Palm OS (I do wonder how the pocket PC would have evolved under Sony) immediately adding new functionality to the hardware and improving upon the software supplied by Palm. The result was a long line of innovative handhelds which all started with the Clie PEG-S300.

5:50 That was Memory Stick to Floppy Disk adapter not minidisk, I got one, but it isn't easiest thing to use. Only works with direct access floppy disk drives, no USB floppy disk drives for me to read my memory sticks.

Thank you for letting me know! I knew there was an SD to floppy but wasn't aware that Sony had done the same thing with a memory stick 😃

@@HandheldComputing They were meant to be used with sony cameras, to transfer photos from MemoryStick to computers before days of USB. I am sure it works for pda too, but i mostly saw them in camera context. It was a transtitional gadget during Mavica cameras, which recorded directly on floppies.

@@TheKsax That would have been a great gadget at the time! Its probably like the SD to floppy though where you need special software on the PC to use it

It really was, 1999/2000 we had the second launch of Minidisk, Sony had a line of MP3 players and digital photography was just starting to take off and the Sony design team were doing great things!

@@pupi-pupi It was an exciting but somewhat short future before all the great design just disappeared from Sony and they stopped making premium quality products and started making ordinary stuff...

Sony really pushed Palm OS to its limits. They were way ahead of their time!

Honestly I doubt Palm would have survived against pocket PC if it wasn't for Sony pushing the OS and Palm slowly taking note!

Good video, thank you! As far as I know, the European version of S300/E has a 20MHz processor, opposite the 16MHz processor in the US model S300.

"I have one of these." Well, dagnabit, I absolutely CAN NOT find the dang thing. I've got the cable, got the cradle, and I've got every cell phone and gadget that I've ever owned. I don't get rid of them. But I sure can't find my Clie. Some day when I move out of this place, perhaps then I'll unearth it. It was certainly my favorite Palm device, before I moved on to cell phones and other things.

Sadly I didn't keep most of the devices I owned so have been buying them again over the last 10 years... One day it'll turn up and then you just need to replace its battery!

I was really amazed back then that we can even view pictures on a monochrome screen... 😂 There were also some PDAs that can take pics using such screen!!

OK I must admit back in 2000 I thought being able to take images on your clie was pretty ground-breaking... but not so much now and honestly at the time Pocket PC did a much better job!

Great review. I really like the purple color scheme, there were VAIO laptops and desktops using it too so it’s something I associate with 2000s Sony designs. Oh, and perhaps SGI workstations. But we can’t all like the same designs though, that would be boring. 🙂

The crazy colour choice is reminiscent of some of the contemporary Sony Ericsson phones that were released at the time. What’s the crazy deal with that power adapter? It’s like the just want to make life difficult. Is there a reason for so many pins just to supply power?
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 4 ай бұрын
The power adaptor is daft! I guess its so you can plug it straight into the unit but most device manufacturers would have supplied a standard 5V barrel and an adaptor. Just glad it works as they are not easy to replace

Sony really banked on a memory stick ecosystem. I completely avoided using it for every other device.

It wasn't the 1st time someone had tried to push a proprietary memory format, it wasn't even the 1st time Sony had done it, you can't blame them its a way to make a lot more money, but as history shows SD and then microSD wins....

The Palm, Sony, Palmspring models were a bit confusing. I suppose there was a lot of overlap.
