Sony Clie PEG-TJ35 Revew

A review of the TJ35 running Palm OS 5. Palm OS 5 was a complete rebuild of Palm OS, designed to run on much more powerful hardware and integrate multimedia into the operating system.
This is my first Palm OS device and being a Sony has some great extra features not found on Palm devices.

i'm on a nostalgia kick and in the market to buy a clié in 2023. how nice to find such a thorough, modern review of one of the models i'm considering!

@@HandheldComputing i wanted something with built-in wifi so it came down to either the tj37 or the th55. i ultimately went with the tj37 because of the physical buttons. i want something that inspires feelings of yesteryear, and the th55 looks too much like today's flat flabs to take me back

Love the design of Clie devices. Just that they're usually pricier than their Palm-branded counterparts

Its true they were always premium compared to Palm counterparts but sometimes you get what you pay for and the Clie range add so many features

Sony's CLIE range of PalmOS handhelds were great devices for their day. Sony really pushed the capabilities of Palm with different form factors and multimedia features. After the 68k T615, I moved to the ARM-based NX60 and settled on the compact UX50 for several years. Outside of the stock apps, I used FileMaker Mobile to sync with FileMaker Desktop for a pocket copy of my comic book collection. Later I moved to HanDbase. I don't think I did much in the way of gaming on the devices beyond standards like Bejeweled and the Acid card games like Acid Solitaire. Many apps used a license key you'd need to purchase through Kagi or similar service and these days I think you need to use an existing key or find a workaround.

The UX50 is AMAZING! One day I might even get my hands on one! Sony really pushed the limits on Palm OS right form the 1st Clie with its innovative jog dial, Its amazing that Palm didn't try and do the same... Good suggestions I will check out filemaker and handbase (I've used this on PPC) and everyone needs Bejeweled in their life!

Great display, ive noticed that even before you mentioned it. However, i think transreflective LCD is good for the outdoors and room-light, but not very good for poor lighting and dark.

This is very true for reflective TFTs but the transreflective screen means its backlit so even brightness distribution and good viewability even in low light
