This is my short review and user experience in using the new Sony FE 200-600 lens in comparison to the FE 100-400 GM lens.
I had the lens for 4 days and went out to find some wildlife and birds.
I will be uploading more videos in the future, so please subscribe!

Trying to decide what telephoto lens to get for my 7iii, however I shoot videos mostly, and I really want to do more wildlife videos, so I think longer reach comes in handy for that purpose. Have you tried these lenses for videos? If so could you please give any feedback?

@mrmschaa 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, thanks for watching! Yes, i filmed with both lenses. But by no means a lot. So my experience is limited concerning filming with both lenses. On the A7R3 and A9 filming was easy and they both kept the focus very well. Only thing that was very hard ist to keep the image smooth and without shake when panning. I use a Rollei and a Manfrotto fluid head on a normal but sturdy tripod. With these focal lengths one should use video tripods and very good heads i guess ;-) Hope that helps a bit...sorry i can not give you in depth information on this topic.

Excellent review and thanks for comparing this to the 100-400. You answered some very important questions without a lengthy blah, blah. Thanks! I shoot Sony for landscape, however because Sony would not commit even to a 100-400 during the A7r days, I decided to replace my heavy Canon (1DMk4, 500 f/4 & 100-400) with the Fuji 100-400 for wildlife. However, now that Sony has the 100-400 and a reasonably priced 200-600 I may replace Fuji with Sony. Especially if Sony provides a nice weatherproof crop sensor body upgrade over the A6400. :-)

Dave Behrens Thank you very much for the kind words Dave! I was a Fuji shooter before too... A 6400, waterproof and with IBIS would be great. I hope we will get that soon. But in the end the A6400 paired with these lenses is already very nice ;-) and delivers excellent quality. AF is great too.

Very nice review and presentation. Photos were outstanding examples. I ordered the 100-400 GM approximately 3 weeks before the 200-600 G was released. I returned the 100-400 Since it was still not n the return window. Now, I am sorry I returned it. I could have used it on my a7iii with aspc mode and clear image zoom and would have a great reach. I did like the fact that the 200-600 had internal zoom. So, not sure what I will do. Maybe reorder the 100-400 and see if it will fit my needs. I really don’t want to use the 1.4 x TC if I can get good images with clear image zoom and aspc modes. I have the 70-200 and love it.

Excellent presentation and comparison. So am I to understand that the 100-400 is sharper till 400mm and the 200-600 is sharper at 600 than the 100-400 with the TC? How big of a difference are we talking about in sharpness between the 100-400 with TC vs the 200-600 at the far end of the focal length (600 mm)?
@mrmschaa
@mrmschaa 5 жыл бұрын
Sasidhar Pamganamamula Thank you very much Sasidhar! Concerning the differences...did you download the RAW files on my blog page. This might be the easiest way to see it. It isn’t a big difference and it would not be something I would be concerned about. The bigger difference between the lenses is the versatility and size. If you want maximum reach and weiht and size is not a problem the 200-600 is for you. Otherwise the 100-400 GM is a great choice. I have the same „problem“ and so I will own both soon ;-) Hope this helps!

@@mrmschaa I missed the link to your website. Thanks again! I appreciate your input. I think I'll go with the 100-400 GM first - it feels like a more 'indispensable' lens if you will - especially for someone who is primarily a landscape photographer (like myself).

Great review but at the end still confused about which one to buy (not your fault of course). Since the image quality apparently has not a big difference between the two lenses and having already a 70-200 it seems more obvious to go for the 200-600. Said that though, be able to have a telephoto lens that can focus at just under a meter compared to the 2,4m it's a big bonus too. At the same time if you want to use a teleconverter you loose a lot of light and from my experience with the SIGMA 150-600 i can tell you it makes a big difference. Buying both lenses? Best choice but it's a hell of a lot of money and for just an amateur do you think it's worth it? My conclusion? Probably I'll go for 100-400 and renting 600 when I'll know i need it (maybe I will change my mind after the next couple of videos of comparison) :-P :-P :-P P.S. really enjoyed your video Michael, good job!!!!!

@@mrmschaa I had the same plan, but both of them went out of stock in Ukraine. It is one of the greatest combinations of Sony lenses. The 200-600 is available right now, but I am not a professional photographer, for me, it is a way to relax after a working day and supportive actions for our army to fight against russia. It is good enough to take pictures of birds with some cropping. I planned to get Sony 24mm f/1.4, Sony 135mm f/1.8, Sony 70-200 f/2.8 II, and Sony 200-600mm. If we are talking about birding, reach is king, you are always shooting at max focal length and max aperture. The 100-400mm is simply not long enough at the end of the day. After you have shot at 600mm or 900mm on a APS-C body or using the APS-C crop on the A7R III, I don't know how you can go back to the 100-400mm, you would feel inadequate. Unless you are talking about a fixed situation such as shooting from a hideout at birds 20 ft away in your garden, then 400mm may well be enough. I am not even a Sony shooter, at least not yet and I want this lens.
@mrmschaa
@mrmschaa 4 жыл бұрын
This is true, the 200-600 is a gem, also concerning the reach. 600mm combined with the 1.4 TC and the crop mode of the A7R4 and it‘s spectacular good AF makes it a wonderful lens for bird photography and other wildlife. Of course you need some light... I sold my 100-400 GM in favour for the 200-600 combined with the 70-200 GM with 1.4 TC and crop mode (makes it F4.0 which is still good).
@Rascallucci

@@mrmschaa When time comes to upgrade my 90D body, this lens could well make me migrate to Sony. Even if the coming Canon R5 might be a great camera, there is simply no Canon super zoom for me to go to and I will never drop US$13K for a 600mm f/4 or 800mm f/5.6. The Sony 200-600mm's quality is good enough to slap on a 1.4x TC, with the Sigma 150-600mm you can't, is terrible actually. Besides, Sigma currently doesn't make any lens for the RF mount anyway.

Hallo Georg, vielen Dank! Da ich selbst keine Makros fotografiere habe ich die Naheinstellgrenze tatsächlich nicht genutzt. Aber für wen es wichtig ist der hat damit natürlich einen weiteren Punkt PRO 100-400 GM.

This is an awesome lens, I was able to test one out recently and I really liked it. However I am a Nikon holdout as I am a photojournalist and I have tons of gear including two D4s' and a 400mm 2.8 VR lens. So my only complaint besides Sony's bad ergonomics and menu's is that this lens is a 200mm F6 and for the same amount of money a Nikon shooter could buy a mint condition 200-400mm F4 VR lens. Which is slightly faster to focus, sharper and better build quality so it just reaffirmed my excellent decision to stay with Nikon and I couldn't be happier that all of the rest of the photography world is switching to Sony!!!

@Sundaystroller Not sure what you're talking about, but if it's about the Nikon 200-400mm F4 being $2k than your wrong. I just sold one for $1900 and had a hard time getting that much. My point was that for photojournalist's like myself, it's awesome used gear is so cheap for Nikon and Canon.

@@patricksmith2553 In general, mirrorless lenses are more expensive than DSLR counterparts, if there's one. Comparing price of a new lens vs a used lens is not a fair comparison. The reason for the Nikon 200-400 f4 loses its value so fast is it's not a good performer for the price. It does ok with close subjects but at 50ft+, it can't hold its sharpness, which is weird. I mean, you can't really compare apples to oranges. For a super tele mirrorless lens, at $2k is actually very affordable and it's great at all aperture, distance, unlike the Nikon 200-400 f4 which is only good for close subjects.

How do you like Nikon killing all your DSLR gear?

@@Jakevoss96 Huh? Killing it? People still buy Nikon F6 film cameras. Mirrorless cameras and DSLR all do the same thing, and in the right hands…make great images. What are you even referring to or were you joking?
