Sony Handycam CCD-TR517 Test Video

9 жыл бұрынUltimately I'm not sure how successful of an endeavor this was. (The corollary being that you never know if you don't try.)
Video quality leaves a lot to be desired. The image sensor seems very noisy and there are definitely some transport issues. I'd guess that the recording head may be dirtier than I expect or starting to wear out. It's not a good idea to get too rambunctious when doing a manual head cleaning, and so I didn't.
Quicktime had a hard time with this file, whose size ballooned up like crazy. This was probably a result of all the video noise fooling the compressor into thinking it was fine detail that needed to be saved.
My test of the Sony CCD-TR91, a much older machine: • Sony CCD-TR91 Video8 H... . I think you'll agree--even without the extra resolution, it's doing a FAR better job than TR517 in this video.

The low-end Video8 and Hi8 Handycams lacked SteadyShot all the way until end of production. In fact, in the last few years, the only real difference between the low-end and fancier Hi8 Handycams was that the fancier models had SteadyShot. Another thing common to these later analog Handycams is that they all really boost the gain in low light, to get a brighter image at the expense of video noise. Manually turning down the exposure a few notches helps keep it at a more sane level.

that kind of video quality brings me a lot of memories. I still have a panasonic VHS-C camera from japan, and is huuuge!! sadly, capacitors are the killer of these cameras, I sent that camera to repair but they could not fix it, at least I got a mini DV JVC from 2004 :)

Did you have the white balance set to indoor? The camera quite obviously did not re-white balance when you first peeked outside.

I have a Sears ( RCA ) VHS camcorder and a JVC VHS-C camcorder. I have been thinking of making a few of my videos with these. In this day of 4K, 60FPS and HD, and being my channel is more tailored to old school gadgets, I think it will be fun to make videos with the era of camera that would sort of go with some of the stuff I do videos about. It is funny how, even though time travel hasn't been invented ( AFAIK ) and I have not seen Doc Brown or Marty Mcfly show up yet ( now that we are in 2015 ) that taking video with these old camcorders is sort of like going back in time. I think the video quality of this Sony really isn't too shabby, and the sound quality is quite good to my ears. I would agree it seems a bit washed out, more noticeable when outdoors. Still fun to play with.

Well that appeared quite normal for analog video recordings :-)) The lack of colour and contrast can be gained back in the editing filters, but lots of light is the thing for older ccd's, quite typical. The head crossover switching synk at the bottom of the picture seems reasonable too, it does lose tracking sometimes but thats often tape control track problems only. You could not compare it to moden recorders, that would be very unfair, the analog recording is lossy and artificial playback sharpening also creates problems. How good is the source cvbs output when shown on a propper monitor bill?

i have the TR-510E and a few years back it lost its record capaillitys it records sound but no picture. is that due to dirty heads?

It's very unlikely. Audio is recorded using the same heads as video.

This video doesn't look too bad for KZfaq; for a Video8 Camcorder, that has pretty good quality; great sound, except for the lack of digital technology, like USB, FireWire, and SteadyShot. My grandpa had his old Video8 Camcorder for a number of years until he upgraded to a Mini DV camcorder that records on DVDs.

It's a decent camcorder. Video quality lacks somewhat but it gets the job done. Seems to have some interesting transitions built in, but not too practical unless they're easily accessible. I like the night vision feature it has. Sad to say my Samsung SMX-C20RN camera isn't much better, even in digital, and I'm glad they got retired for a Sony HD camera.

Some Digital8 camcorders could also play analog tapes. When they do, they also output a digital data stream to an attached computer. As best I remember, I played the tape in such a camcorder.

Thing is, these older Sony camcorders might've not been the highest falluting thing about, they were well made and reliable, I do like the video quality of these older units just looks more natural to my eyes (or eye as I can only see out of the left one LOL). Modern cameras are good but on the whole just don't always think the quality of the video is as easy to watch as older videos just cause they're soo sharp and whatever modern camcorders do, espcially phone ones just makes modern videotaking gear look quite wearing on our eyes, atleast that's the way I get it dunno about anyone else.

No, this is an analog camcorder.

There are some Digital8 camcorders that can play the older analog Video8 and Hi8 tapes you have. This is the approach I would recommend, as many of these machines will greatly improve the stability and quality of the video as the tape plays. If you haven't already started, I'd do it now while those machines are still fairly cheap and easy to find in working order.

Yes. Push the date or time buttons until both indications have disappeared.

Hmm. The microphone on that thing also doesn't seem to be very good. I find that the sound sometimes buzzes at times.

***** Interesting. Is it mistracking because the video heads are dirty? Or is it because the tracking hasn't been adjusted very well?

1980sGamer My guess is the tape is degrading for a lot of usage, or slight crinkling of the tape itself causing the distortion of the audio. VHS tapes are like that, too.

Its possible , i usually watch everything in HD and your videos do look find dont get me wrong but this footage somehow looks smoother
