Video Description:
In this video, we take a close look at the Sony HVL-F20M external flash, one of the most popular budget-friendly flashes on the market. I'll cover its features and functionality, do a quick indoor test, and share my personal review.
The Sony HVL-F20M is a compact and lightweight flash that's perfect for everyday photography. It has a guide number of 20, which means it can light up subjects up to 20 meters away at ISO 100. It also has a bounce head, which allows you to bounce the flash off a ceiling or wall to create softer, more indirect lighting.
In addition, the Sony HVL-F20M is compatible with Sony's ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) system, which automatically adjusts the flash power based on the distance to your subject. This makes it easy to get well-exposed flash photos without having to manually adjust the settings.
For our indoor test, I used the Sony HVL-F20M with my Sony A7R V to light up two toy model subjects in a dimly lit room. The flash performed well, producing even and flattering lighting. I also experimented with bouncing the flash off the ceiling, which created a softer, more natural look. I also show off how it looks on a Sony ZV-E10.
Overall, I'm impressed with the Sony HVL-F20M external flash. It's a great value for the price, offering a good set of features and functionality in a compact and lightweight design. If you're looking for a budget-friendly flash that will help you take better photos in low light, the Sony HVL-F20M is a great option to consider.
Personal Review:
One of my favorite things about the Sony HVL-F20M is its compact size and lightweight design. It's easy to carry around in my camera bag, and it doesn't add too much weight to my camera.
Another great thing about the Sony HVL-F20M is its bounce head. This allows me to bounce the flash off a ceiling or wall to create softer, more indirect lighting. This is especially useful for indoor photography, where I don't want to overwhelm my subjects with harsh direct flash.
Overall, I highly recommend the Sony HVL-F20M external flash to anyone looking for a budget-friendly and versatile flash. It's a great value for the price, and it will help you take better photos in low light.

It's a great flash. Just know how far you are from your subject to know how to set your power for the flash. It's cool to use as a trigger but you only control one channel. I own this, 2 Hvl f32m and one Hvl f28rm and if you want to use multiple flash at different power then using this as a trigger is bad. Same thing thing with using off camera it has to be in line of sight. Still a great piece of gear but understand your a bit limited when it comes to off camera flash set up. But I've done some great work with it and highly recommend it

Thank you for your comment and for sharing your experience. Yes, I as well like this flash, good as a trigger for one channel. I love the form factor, hate its recycle time. So convenient to bring along. So much more can be said.

Thank you for doing this video. In portrait orientation, can this flash be twisted up? Or would this generally be only for landscape orientation? Thank you.

Thank you for your comment. It’s generally for landscape orientation. You could DIY a rubber to cup a bounce reflecting. However, the flash is quite powerful and sufficient for most cases.

Great video! I'm curious - which Samyang lens do you have on the 2nd body...?

Hi, thank you for your comment. It’s the Samyang 12mm f/2.0 AF Compact Ultra-Wide Angle Lens for Sony E-Mount. Works really well. I like it a lot.

Thanks for your comment. Yes they can. However from my research, there have been complaints about them (in camera flashes) that they can become flaky and hot. I haven’t tried them myself, so I can’t say much more.

Can I use this flash in tilt down position? Or it needs that position as a switch OFF?

Hi, thanks for your comment. When in tilt down completely, it’s would always turn off. However when tilt down a little, you can still use it.

@@TossSong I have EF-X20 from fuji and I love its default position (permanent actually) to be close with lens for “point n’ shoot look” direct flash. Still on fence for getting this flash for my Sony’s a7c.

For me, the compact size is the selling point. If you want something light when traveling, can’t anything better. Other than that obviously there are more options with more features. And also price wise.

i dont think red eye is caused by light bouncing...

Thank you for your comment. It’s when a camera's flash reflects off the subject's retina and into the camera lens. Or you could educate me about it.
@mmdday
@mmdday 6 ай бұрын
that's correct, it's light shone through the retina. Your finger gesture on your video made it sound like the flash being reflected off of the body of the lens.

I see, I got it. Yes, could how my gesture could be confusing. 🤔 Thank you nevertheless for your comment. 😀
