This is a KDL-46VL130 4 year old 46 inch Sony LCD TV with a defective LCD Panel. It started out with no picture at all when first turned on (cold) and after this repair when cold the picture had a shaded picture. I am looking for anyone that has reliably repaired this problem using whatever means the average tech has within his means. I know that is a company in the San Diego, CA area that will "Re-Tab" the panel but the cost including shipping the panel is cost prohibitive in today's market. So if anyone has any ideas please leave detailed comments. Thanks

My 2007 Sony Bravia started doing this a couple of months ago. Your double sided tape and latex tubing worked like a charm. A friend and I tore the TV apart and put a length of tape and latex across all ribbons in two pieces just leaving the center portion uncovered. Let's hope it turns out to be a permanent fix. Thanks so much!

Sony KDL-52W3000, after removing the shroud and LCD sheetmetal frame, it was found that one of the short ribbons between the LCD panel and the PC board on top of the panel was intermittent. Small wonder, these things run hot; there must be a lot of current through that little ribbon...

Have you tried heating the flex cable with a heat gun to reflow the solder?

They are just attached there with no solder, trying to apply some hot air might get the ribbon to come off the panel

About the only thing to do is to use high temperature padding and sandwich it between the flex cable connection point and the panel assembly's metal housing. There doesn't appear to be much else you can do to fix a failed contact bond on an LCD panel.

I repaired my Sony Kdl52 same problem, using silicone heat sink padding they use on computer chips. So far, so good. Fingers crossed. Paid $2,500 for it in 08 and there was no way I was gonna just toss it! I was never home and hardly watched it. If I was lucky, it couldn’t of had more than 400 hours on it. If it screws up again I’ll take it apart and try something else. I was told these TVS all have the same problem. I swear they make these parts to fail on purpose!

in China they fix these. I watched a video on the repair but there was no audio. he basically removed the ribbon cable from the board with heat and use a solution to clean the connection on the cable and board then used another solution to bond the cable with heat bar. I wish he mentioned the solutions he used to clean and bond, didn't look like flux. I searched LCD SCREEN REPAIR

What you is is call cof bonding repair, they repair it by clean and remove old cof glue with acetone. Then using acf film which look like double side tape "AC-2056R for stick cof and pcb", AC-7206U for screen glass with cof". Using pressure and heat at 230' c to bond both.

I have several TVs using folded up alum foil to help dissipate heat from those ribbon cables that seem to overheat. I've tried a thin piece of craft foam paper size sheet also wrapped in aluminum foil. Some TV have some type of IC or metal "pill?" in the ribbon middle that seems to get real hot.

Great Video! So i have a KDL52v4100 and had the same horizontal line ghost image issue. I have taken the tv apart and followed your quick fix. It was working well with the fix. I flipped the tv over to put the screw back in etc and now when i turn the tv on i get a black screen -.- I took the back panel back off to check if i had any disconnected cables but everything seemed fine.. I hope i didnt short the tv.. When i plug in the power cable and press power the back light turns on but nothing

Always the problem is in the pcb side.The connection is made using a two sided thermal adhensive tape its name is anisotropic conductive film (ACF) which is making conduct only in the Z axis from bottom to top and this poor contact causes all the problems.Maybe somewhere in the market there are some of these tapes that no special machines with heat and pressure is needed and can be used same as the simple two sided adhensive tape which it could be a magic.

Thanks for the great information. My KDL-46VL130 has the exact problems as shown in the video, black and white dots with "No Signal" displayed. I press on the outer top left metal frame in front of the panels and the screens composition improved. I apologize, in advance, for being a novice, but I have couple of questions before I proceed disassembling. (1) How did you remove the speaker wires from the frame? I am afraid I will break the solder if I try and pull the tabs. (2) How do I remove the "No Signal" and get a real picture on the screen to test before I reassemble the TV.

What about using thin single strand wire and the pulling the plastic off of it and use that for the space between. So wires don't touch each other. Then using the double sided tape to press down on it.

You would think that lcd manufacturers would install a connector on the lcd and a connector on the board with a replaceable ribbon connecting the two together. Just poor designs in my opinion. This is a common problem on many brands of TV's. Sometimes this temporary fix works and other times it will not depending on how loose the bond is on the panel or on the board.

That would be soooo ideal. but of course it's like they want the tv to fail eventually so you'll be force to buy a new one. I had an 80" sharp aquos that became paperweight just because one of the side ribbons got loose.

this is great , im gonna try this, i have bravia kdl-46Z4500 in europe it costed 2700 euros quite expensive , after 3 years of work 1/3 of screen got pixelated,repair shop said is gonna cost 750 euros to change the screen, so is just too much, but this looks promising thanks for the upload

Try Solar Seal #900 it comes in assorted colors. It used to hold windows inside window frames for 20 years.

I have to say that it could be permanent but sadly it is not a sure fix. I had 2 bad ribbons on my monitor. One of them is working perfectly now but the other ohhh.. the other, I kept trying and trying my method, I tried yours too, I even tried 3M 9703 tape with pressure pads together but Nothing! It kept flashing, and after all that rework it became worse. At the end I have to assume that it wasn't just the board-ribbon con fail but possibly the driverIC-ribbon too.Sure thing COF very delicate.

Then after a couple months of using it as my computer monitor, (mine was the 130/ 52" model just bigger same thing. I tried to connect something in the back one day, i put stress on the housing and then it started doing what YOURS is doing right now out of no where. The click by the way when looking at the screen, seemed like it was coming from the back top left corner.

What I use to fix this problem I use the pieces of heat dissipation used below some boards on plasmas(it's like rubber or some kind of gum) just cut it on the right size

If only one side is faulty(one bad tab), and it is driven by ic's down both sides of the panel, it is possible to remove the driver IC's from the side of the panel that has a faulty power connection. The drivers on the good side of it to be drive the whole panel. it removes load and lets the other ones drive all the way across. This can only work if only one half has gohsting or slow refresh, and if you remove the drivers from the incorrect side, the set will be trash. it is a risky solution

If the ribbon is ripped the LCD panel is ruined. I just picked up a 24" monitor and found the user had ripped three of the tab bonds. Thought it was a bargain. Argh!

Hey thx so much! I didn't take it apart but got a temporary fix for the college bcs game tonight by pressing very hard on the top left side where the ribbon is located. Is it easy to get the frame off & how long does it take? where did you buy the tubing? also, what kind of screwdriver?

HI. What do you use to stick the yellowish rubber connector to the panel. I have to replace the old board but do not know how to remove the connect from the damaged board without damaging the connector and stick the new board.

Great Video! I have a similar Sony set with some screen ghosting on the lower 3/5 of the display. I tried pressing on the ribbons but have no luck. I also tried swapping out the t-con board and the problem remains. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks!

great job norcal...i have a sony 46 kdl46hx800 that displays on just half the screen. it leaves the other half blank...so i opened it up and figured the right flex wasn't properly positioned..i attempted positioning it but the result i got was a full image with no pictures or displays of any sort...i reverted the fix and got it to display on half the screen again...have u any hint on what could be wrong

i had Samsung LED TV UA40D5000PR, it has screen problem. when i switch it on sometimes its shows vertical lines starting from center of the screen from top to bottom and then goes to whole screen. but this problem is not always. then i power it off and make its power on after 15-20 minutes it works fine. so this problem is not always but comes and goes by power it on or off and restart after 15-20 minutes. kindly guide me what to do. i had already unplugged the ribbon strip of t-con board and cleaned it and again put it back, but the problem exist as it is. awaiting your kind advice. regards Nitin

Hi. I was wondering if super glue would work to put under the tab and then press till its dry? I have repaired a Bluetooth headset by super gluing the wire to the speaker because every time I tried to solder it, it would just burn the wire. do you thinks it will work to reattach a lifted tab to the driver or do you think it would cause a chemical burn on the tab itself?

put a small a mount of conductive paint under the tab dot size but dont short out connections i used to repair printed circuit boards with it

...I have a Sony KDL 32SL130 paired with a Sony DVP-NS77H...for some reason the remote for the TV does not get ANY reaction from the set...yet the set will respond in a very limited way to the remote for the DVD player ( on/off and volume up only)...And weirder yet...the DVD player only responds to its remote with on/off only...Batteries new and contacts of remotes cleaned...I cannot figure this out and I am certain a repair would be more than a new TV and DVD player...Do you have any ideas?

Sounds like a panel problem. Try and flexing the ribbons as in the video and see if you get anywhere. You may have a failed drive pack(part of the panel) Sorry

I have an 24" asus computer monitor that is showing white distortion in a similar way. The unit powers on fine, but as it warms up it begins to have this same white distortion problem. Could this be my ribbon cable as well? I guess I need to get into it and try some things.

Hello. I saw that one is a little corroded ...I think it was cat urine that got wet.. the one that is failing. This technique did not solve. Is there any way to change this flat cable? Does any flat cable work or needs to be model specific?

norcal715@ Cant you reseat the connectors on the back of the LCD panels .There glued on right Not soldered on . Im betting there glued on You can find a way to get a good electrical connection on the ribbon cable it self . the ribbon cable have lead fro different part of the panel or is it just one electrical connection for the hole lead on it .

wow they really build the tv like that with the ribbon cable like that? what a cheapo. Might as well build a TV with it all gorilla glued, it still would last longer

I have the same exact TV, and i got the TV in this condition, It has goast image originaly, HEY try this on this model. Let it Warm up for 15 mins then shut it off and turn it on again, then shut it off just before u see the bravia stamp, then turn it on again and let it fully start, The problem on mine went away and it worked fine for months after warm up. I could literally hear something sound like click when its about to turn on correctly after warm up. When no click, you get this crap image

get super glue press on it put the glue hold it for 30 seconds and that works fine for me. get the glue around it and not under it

I got a 47 inch sony smart tv. No pic no sound but I got backlights and power light according to repair man he say the board was bad so we replaced it so he say my display panel is bad which he say will cost more than the tv. Have u heard of this before should i buy a new tv or seek other shops

A bad LCD panel will not produce the no sound symptom you described. When you say bad board which board was replaced, Main, T-Con, or power supply. maybe a 2nd opinion wouldn't be the worst idea ever.

@@norcal715 Im not sure the repair man just sat he put in a new board and it still gave him no sound no picture but i got back lights and the green power light comes on so he diagnosed the tv with bad display panel which he say will cost the same as a new tv. What is a display panel anyway. Have u ever heard of that.

Yes unfortunately the LCD screen is the display panel and fail too often. But...it will not affect the sound, only the picture. I would get a 2nd opinion if possible.

It was not a relay click, Power board was fine, personaly i think it has to do with the top of the main board, it was a tick more then a click, it was not mechanical. I checked ribbons the first time and it worked, the second time i tried everything to the damn ribbons and finally just gave in and put it aside until i could find a solution at a later time. I usually get help from you tube and a lot of your videos, but it saddens me that your stumped too. :( DAMN U BRAVIA

Sony manufacturer are selling sub standard led tv spacialy in Pakistan as in Pakisran Customer Rights are not implemented in letter nd spirit. Company is making fool by providing sub standard tv essembeled in Chiina. Inspite of multiple complaints in almost all forum nobody responded but a phobe callonly .

Have you tried heating the ribbon while pressing it over the faulty pin(s)? Just worked on my NEC LCD1970NX ! Check this out [imageshack.us/photo/my-images/31/szlt.jpg]. Easy to find the problematic pins by rolling the tweezers over the ribbon on turned-on monitor.
