Cleaning the optical drive is not enough, sometimes it could be the tray motor or the belt. But even if you have replaced the belt and are still having issues then most likely the tray motor is dying in which case you need to either find an entire optical drive or the little motor inside it.

Agree, there are many potential causes for the slow opening disc tray. That said, I've had good luck and have done dozens this way. As these consoles age, there's bound to be other issues and failures unfortunately.

You should link the video that has the disk drive belt replacement. I came looking for that, and hopefully how to grease the gears any anything like that.

Umm, when you put everything back together and turned the PS2 back on (after all the cleaning), the "screen dot" in the menu screen was still not moving. Did you check the clock battery again to see if it was either in backwards or was possibly another dead battery? Non-animated dots on the menu screen are always a non-working clock battery.

I use a Ryobi battery powered air pump w/ a needle that's designed to fill basketball/footballs etc. Home Depot spells them for 19.99 tool only and they work absolutely perfect for this kind of project.

I've got one question I just restored my PS2 and when I plugged everything in a green light just popped up my discs aren't reading is there something I'm doing wrong

hello, I have a problem with my ps2 .. when I insert a disc, the laser normally moves up and down, but the cd/dvd only rotates a little and then stops and you can just see the laser trying to catch somewhere .. don't you know what to do with it please?

I use White Lithium grease in a tube. Most big box hardware & automotive stores should stock it.

I was almost done putting it back together and the plastic connector that clamps down to the ribbon on the mainboard Broke off. Now I have no way to secure the ribbon. FML

@LiamW22 there’s no way to secure a tight connection. The clamp broke that holds the ribbon in place.

@LiamW22 I’m not following, I would need to see pictures on what you mean. The ribbons are not the issue. The plastic connector clamp that is soldered to the mainboard is the problem
