Dude I think your comments about its environmental impact is terribly off. If i can just cool my body instead of cooling my whole house or room or car it will save tremendous amounts of energy. If it can save me getting an Air conditioner the amount of CO2 emissions save will be tremendous again

Just opened up my Reon 4 fresh from japan. Agreed, don’t replace air at the moment. But tech is an iterative process. Maybe in 3-5 years with stronger output & the addition of some sort of suction feature to help circulate cooled body fluid. Maybe then we can set the thermostat a bit higher.

Yeah, guy is just another one to jump on the " it's cool to be a greenf@g" wagon without actually researching anything. He complains about a little plastic bag, while he should redirect that complaint to the likes of Nestle who literally destroys rivers and produces more emissions than 1 mill cars would a day. I cringe at ppl like this. They are just victims of the corpo capitalist machine. The machine urges them to be mindful and buy TEslAs but nobody tells them that the machine itself is the cause.

@@goodereader Actually it CAN. If your body is just marginally warm it will make it be and feel cooler and just that tiny bit of less AC usage would pay for it over time. A typical house AC unit uses 7,000 watts/hr. This unit uses less than 50. Yes, it won't cool your HOUSE, but when it makes your body feel even marginally cooler, you could run it for 70 hours in place of a home AC unit for 1 hour, and that's doubling it's wattage to accommodate for charging losses. Marginal cooling is nothing new. We do it all day long with fans on the floor or ceiling.

I think this looks amazing, especially if you are good with your hands and can make your own bracelets or neck chains to hold it. You could also attach it to your ballsack to get that extra strong cooling

Hmm, I'm surprised it worked at all. I wouldn't buy one but it would be nice to try it in the hot and humid weather we get in the South Eastern US during the summer. It hits points where I just hate to go outside because of that heat/humidity combo.

Is it more effective than wearable fans? I have impression that this device makes you feel cold, but not actually cools you down. If it has typical phone-size battery(4Ah), full battery contains energy equivalent to cooling by drinking 0.5L of cold water.

No, the wearable fans are probably better for cooling, but this does have a very good sensation when it comes to heat, Peter says.

This is obviously a Peltier device in custom packaging with battery, fan, temp sensor and a logic board to control it and provide a bluetooth interface. Cool idea (pun intended)

i noticed over covid if you buy wipes that use alcohol and then use the new readers technique to stay cool of putting a damp towel on the back of your next it also coold you down. I use the wet wipes to wipe the back of my nexk and ears when hot. the alcohol evaporates and cools you down. wipes are a bit wasteful though.

Not sure which region you're in but I live in the US and had my friend get this for me when she was in Japan. She actually got the Reon Pocket 4 for me but Sony limits the use of the app to only in that region. I also tried to VPN through Japan and couldn't download this from the play store.

@@dannguyen5265 Unfortunately I can't. There's no way to bypass the region settings unless I change my phone completely to be set in Japan from what I'm reading. VPN is not working, there's no third party app to allow me to install the reon pocket 4. At this point it's just paperweight on my desk as you can't control the device without the use of the app.

I'm in HK right now and was upset that it dint let me download it from my US phone. After about 10 minutes of frustration I sideload the apk and it works great! Haven't gotten to really use my reon pocket asking I just bought it last night, but the app is surprisingly good, and I say that wondering how long it's been since an app impressed me.

Kind of, you can run it off a charger, but it cannot charge and operate at the same time (Edit: I'm using the latest model the Pocket 5)

@@petergriffin4629 Probably didn't do a good job of explaining that! What I meant is you can run it off mains (USB wall socket/charger etc) but it will not charge the battery at the same time. If you stop using it and leave it plugged in, it will charge.

It's obviously a Peltier device with a fan and logic. Larger units could be built, but unless you're in something like a space suit, it can't effectively cool the air around your body, so that's why they went with body contact where there's lots of blood flow up into the brain and elsewhere, and cycling it on and off, since Peltier's can get quite cold (they are in those mini USB soda fridges and also the fanless dehumidifiers for sale). We're stuck with just body contact unless someone invents some clothing with tough flexible tubing to circulate a liquid around something like a shirt since that would cool the arms (long sleeves) and torso. It's definitely do-able, as years ago I thought water cooling a PC was a suicide mission (putting water near electricity to risk leaks), but if they can make that work, they can certainly circulate water in some tubing in a custom shirt...

That's kind of lame. I was hoping it could suck warm air in and blow cool air out. As a sweaty dude from over exerting myself at work a fan blowing cool air down my scrubs sounds like a life saver. Instead of having an ice cube on my neck and the rest of my body hot af lol

I live in Texas and just bought one of these from eBay on the chance I could get it working manually without an app or with IOS somehow. I’m still trying to figure it out. I wish they would have designed this to be manually operated by the one button to go through its temp settings. It does turn on and is set to the lowest cooling setting which is noticeably chilly. I guess my only option is to get an old android phone and set it up in different region or download the APK way as you said in earlier replies. There must be other ways to hack into this!

@@whitejtw I ended up finding an old Samsung phone and downloaded APK and then Reon app. It works great for how small it is. I’m just still annoyed that I have to carry another phone around with me just to access the temp control. It does have a setting in the app that remembers and starts in the last temp setting which hasn’t worked in all restarts. The app needs a little work in my opinion but does the job. I had it set on the coldest setting and it lasted for almost 6 hours and the best way to describe the feeling is like a little ice cube without the wet on the back of your neck. Another interesting thing I’ve noticed is the pulsing effect of the cold and hot settings, maybe a safety feature. Overall very happy with this little thing and actually thought about ordering another.

Hey! Not sure if you'll see this but you can get it to work with your iPhone. You gotta make another apple ID and use a country that the Reon is available (like Hong Kong), then install the app. Once it's installed you can switch back to your old apple ID. This is kind of a barebones explanation but it can be done :D

If you have an Android phone you can easily side load the .apk and it works fine. If you have an iPhone you are out of luck if you live outside Japan because neither App store has it if you are in a different location.

Kind of a few months too late but hopefully this will help anyone who comes across this video at a later date. This is a kind of a long term review of the Pocket. Im from India and I guess in the target climatic zone for the RP. I picked up the Pocket 2 from eBay and got it shipped to me because its only available in Japan and HK. I got the cooler + neckband combo because I wasnt keen on spending a ludicrous amont of money on the Pocket undershirts. For me, the neckband doesnt work too well because of my poor, hunched posture which doesnt always allow the cooling plate to make good contact with my skin. Instead, I did a bit of measuring and got suitible pockets sewn onto bamboo cotton vests (which add a bit of passive cooling and moisture wicking) and these are what I use when outside. As for the cooling, it works pretty decently and even more so when I pair it with a belt clip fan up front. It keeps me just at the border of the comfort zone when Im out in the sun with hot, humid weather rather than being a sweaty sticky exhausted mess. It does cycle through intensity levels a bit but thats just how PELTIERS work, it needs to slow down or downclock when the hot side gets too hot for the heatsink and tiny fan but its jsut for a short duration. You do lose the cooling SENSATION after a while just like the way you cant smell your own perfume after a while but its still working. Ideally keep it in Auto or custom mode where it cycles through cooling intensity levels so you keep feeling that cooling sensation for longer intervals and sending the right signals to your brain. Which brings me to how I BELIEVE the Pocket works. It is doing 2 things - 1] Actually cooling the arteries carrying blood to our brains, keeping us from getting exhausted a feeling the heat to a lesser degree and as we know, we radiate and lose a lot of body heat from the head and 2] By cooling your brain, its TRICKING it into thinking that its cooler than it actually is. So when the rest of your body sends the brain a signal to sweat more, the brains like "Nah fool you trippin its not that hot. Im only authorizing 50% of the sweat you requested" so that keeps you comfortable as well because when its hot and HUMID, the sweat doesnt evaporate well enough to cool you down and just adds another layer to your discomfort. So. Does it work ? YES but not in the way you think or expect. Would I buy it again ? YES if there were improvements to the current model in several areas and also NO not at he current US$150-200 price point for the current design. Would I recommend the current model to someone else YES, if you spend a lot of time outdoors in the heat with no easy way to cool down then the Pocket can make your life marginally better. You can get longer run time by connecting it to a power bank in your pocket. If $200 wont pinch you then go for it but pair it with a fan like I do. Ideally a cooling fan with a peltier would be the best product for personal cooling if the waste heat could be exhausted effectively. Im really surprised no one has made something like this - a true pocket/personal AC. There are some handheld fans with peltiers in them that I have seen on AliX but they dont cool down the air stream and instead just cool a metal plate on the fans hub that you are supposed to use as a cold compress. I know peltiers arent as efficient as refrigerant based cooling but its 100-150W of inefficient cooling to keep cool one person vs 1500-2000W of efficient cooling to cool one person and the entire room he is in.

Spot on. I have a van conversion and have several times thought to buy one of the AliX fridge quadruple Peltier units and rig it up into an enclosure over just my bed in the van using foam insulation board to enclose the space and insulate it a bit. Rig the Peltiers at the top, tiny PC fan to circulate the air over the fins, put the hot side outside the enclosure, add a drip pan below it for condensation capture with a hose drain (I have 2 of the dehumidifiers with Peltiers which gave me the idea) and cycle it on and off at whatever frequency works well. I have a 3D printer and full woodworking shop so can custom make it into a nice assembly to just build the foam insulation board around it via some slots that led the foam board slide in for easy assembly. Hinging the front panel for entry exit (say, running nearly the length of your left side while sleeping), means you can just put it in place and use all summer with an LED over at the handle to see it in the night and exit. If the panels are removeable, you could leave the main unit with Peltiers/drip pan/controls suspended from the ceiling. If I can get a 10-20F drop in air temp, along with some humidity drop it would be a game changer for van travel in wider climate range comfortably to sleep and my 200ah Lithium will laugh at it's 200 or 400 watts cycling on and off all night. I believe there's a commercial product for just cooling a bedspace like that that would incorporate even 8 of the Peltiers (2 sets of 4 from AliX). Since van/RV roof vents are a standard size (and would accommodate 2 of the 4 Peltier strips AliX sells) it could easily be made into a product to fit into that space, and then benefit from exhausting the heat out the open roof vent. A similar unit with an adapter could work over a bed in a house to give cooler sleeping for low income people. Guess I need to do a Kickstarter!

I think it may be bad for the environment to build and run, similar to air conditioners in general. But I would say it (or something similar) is going to be crucial in the coming years for people who have to work outside on 40 degree plus days for example. We’re seeing heatwaves in spring and autumn, and particularly dangerous ones in the humid summers in Japan and around the world. So yeah, it’s definitely going to be needed. The neck band looks super uncomfortable though. They need to change that.

Unfortunately no, the fans are the size of a toothpaste cap So it essentially uses the fan to dissipate the heat to add as much cooling as possible to the contact patch

a shame the review is not done for the main target audience, people all suited up during the hottest months. I see that as more or less the one situation where this really would prove its worth. From someone getting soaked daily walking in 100 degrees in a suit I would genuinely love to have seen how it looks on in that attire etc.

That's because cold is removing heat and heating is adding heat. You can't 'add' cold to a system.

In my country we learn from a young age that subjecting parts of your body to localized cold (ice bags, stream of cold air, etc.) will lead to rheumatic problems, getting a cold, etc. I don't know how true this is but it sure feels like walking around with a cold patch at the base of your neck is not a healthy idea.

In my country I have been taught to spray or splash water back of the neck if your body becomes too hot in summer. Cooling back of your neck actually cools you down .

Medical educator here! :) I'm happy to expand on this information and/or provide scientific sources at request. However, I can answer your initial statement: No--exposing your body, localized or otherwise, to colder temperatures will not cause nor increase your chance of contracting rheumatic conditions/diseases, nor does being cold increase your chance of contracting viral infections such as the cold. Neither air conditioning nor this tool would result in rheumatic diseases nor viral infections of any sort--assuming the guy that sells it to you isn't actively smoking and coughing into your mouth while you're at the register. Again I'm happy to provide sources for any of this if interested, but ask yourself: Citizens of Svalbard, Greenland, Siberia, Antarctica, or the colder regions of Japan have never shown higher rates of rheumatic diseases, viral infections, or any other similar illnesses or diseases, nor have individuals who have moved from warm climates to cool climates. The gist is that being cold may exacerbate joint pain--such as that caused by rheumatic conditions but could not cause them. Genetics, hormone disorders, autoimmune disorders, exposure to certain chemicals (smoking for example), etc. cause rheumatic disorders, but not the environmental or body temperature. The cold is a viral infection and cannot be caused by the environment or body temperature. Various inconclusive studies suggest being cold may reduce your immune systems' effectiveness, but even in those instances, of more impact would be poor nutrition, poor sleep, stress, etc. And even then, still of more impact are the seasonal impacts of staying indoors longer and more frequently, colder conditions being more beneficial for viral reproduction, etc. Hope that helps!

Viruses will cause viral infections in low immune systems. The environment does affect your inmune system so does stress and lot of other factors.
