Wow... best "get up to speed fast" camera video I've seen. I appreciate the explanation for the menu choices were made vs many videos that just show that the options exist.

Hi Maarten, a very useful video. I just bought the RX10 and your video gave me a kick start to use it, so I would like to thank you for this. Next Monday I will go to Gilze-Rijen Air Base to test it for the first time on moving helicopters (I bought this camera for its video capabilities only). I find this controls and possibilities on this camera impressive for a 1600 euro camera. Compared to the Z6II of Nikon which I also have it is, which is 2000 euro, it is impressive from Sony. I am heavily attached to my Nikon for shooting video, but I would not be surprised if the Sony will become my primary camera for the quick snapshots at the airbase as it has an outstanding color profile inventory! Keep up the good work, I love your tutorials 😎

Pretty sure that (depending on your lenses) they both have a place in your kit. If you are using both for a shoot, I do recommend that you shoot a colour chart on each for each location - they can be hard to match.

Great summary of all these settings. Do you have recommendations for keeping wildlife subjects in focus? Is there a mode that will track an animal as it's distance to the camera changes?

Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. I have not - there are just too many variables to consider - and the advice is pretty much the same for all cameras. You'll need a long/fast lens, and likely a tripod or one with excellent stabilization. You'll need a fast shutter speed (so S mode is likely most appropriate) 1/500, or maybe higher - depends on the lens, distance, speed of flight, etc. Hope this helps, enjoy your trip. The RX10iv outputs live audio to the HDMI in video mode only.

Thanks for the kind words. The choice of head would be different for stills or video - but otherwise, just look at size and weight, as that makes the difference. And stick with a brand name.

Yes. You will find a setting to switch from PAL (25-based) to NTSC (30 based) if you want 24.

Thanks for the kind words. The camera, like many other still factor cameras that shoot video, is limited to a recording length under 30 minutes to avoid some European import duty. Ridiculous, I know. Worst here is that at the end of the time, there is no sound that it has stopped (unlike when you press the button to stop). But just press the record button to start recording again. The only way around this is to use an external recorder, like those sold by Atomos.

Add more light to the scene. Alternately, if it's not reduced by the LUT you're using, try grading the scene manually to lower the shadows.

NTSC is compatible with TV sets and screens in areas where NTSC is the video standard (like North America), PAL is compatible with sets and screens in PAL areas (mostly Europe). Use either if your output is the web (including KZfaq). Although the original broadcast standards were different (625/30 frames lines in NTSC, 525/25 in PAL) the resolution differences went away with HD.

Still learning all the features of my RX10m4 but still manage to get great images. Filming with it at my granddaughters dance recital next weekend so don’t have a lot of time to get up to speed. I filmed last year and they turned out great but I don’t remember the settings I used. I have never shot raw and am not comfortable enough yet to go fully manual. I think I used Program Auto but don’t remember anything else. Are you able to help me with some of the important settings that I will need to set my camera at to film the kids on stage with lighting while I sit in the dark auditorium. I am not up close but not in the balcony either. Probably near the back though as we will be sitting with a friend in a wheelchair.

I think the settings in this video should work - however, in order not to get the faces too washed out, I'd recommend the Highlight Meter Mode.

Hello and thanks for all your Sony RX10 IV videos. May I ask you, I'vew heard, that 24fps with longer shutter and manual ISO is the best settings for cinematic look (like movies). Can you describe it to me? Thanks.

Well, if you are trying to emulate the settings used in traditional film cinema production, they would shoot 24fps with a shutter of 1/48 (or so). Movie projectors also run at 24 frames per second. In general I would recommend using manual settings for all exposure parameters, as well as colour balance and focus if you're going for a filmic look. It's likely also preferable to shoot with (manual) prime lenses, as there are few zooms in movies and they generally provide a nice background defocus. That said, any video your produce, unless it is going to be projected in a cinema, is going to be seen on a video screen at 30 frames (in North America - 25 in Europe). It's always best to match your frame rate to the display device. And in general, to get the right perception of motion blur, 1/60 (or so) is the right setting to use. Hope this helps.

I was looking for a camcorder and started to evaluate the FDR-AX700, then I came across this video, after watching the "Detailed and extensive hands on review (4k)" video. For the same price, would it be good to consider the RX10 IV, as both have 1 inch sensors? I would mostly use the camera for video purposes but the idea of 24fps for stills is good. What would you suggest?

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Stills settings are much more dependent on the nature of the image you're trying to capture, it's not really possible to do this kind of explanation. However, use AF single, wide, Program mode with Auto ISO and auto white balance. That will cover most situations.

In regions where the mains frequency is 25Hz, that's the default for the camera's frame rat.e If you want/need 24/30/60, then the menu can change the setting to NTSC.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It's not like the Panasonic, but Sony does have "photo capture", which enables you to play the video, select the frame and capture a still from it. Note that the shutter speed for video does not typically lend itself well to stills.

Of course it is compromised! With 4K you cannot choose anything but standard stab, which I believe is the optical. When shooting 1080p you can use electronic stab on top of the optical. Shooting 4K without a gimbal is a mission next to impossible

This mode takes clear images of dark or backlit scenes. the footage for video is sharp, rich colour, autofocus 99% is there, i was struglling with autofocus in manual mode, i have to touch the screen all the time. thank you

Yes. Using picture profiles isn't limited to any specific video settings.

When in Auto, Program, or Aperture mode, and the camera has to select a shutter speed, why does the logic not follow the 180 degree shutter speed rule (like your using). My camera usually picks a faster speed, and if I zoom out, it gets even faster (following the focal length rule). I notice it at least picks a slower speed then when you shoot stills, so it’s as if the camera is compromising somewhat and trying to reduce the shutter speed. What’s your opinion on that? I wonder why there’s not an option in the menu to force the 180 degree rule, if possible to get.

I assume you're talking about video. So the reality is that 1/60 would overexpose most exterior shots, so it's rarely feasible for the camera to select it on its own, unless you are using an ND filter. Anyway, I'd always recommend that you shoot video in M - just so that the camera isn't making unwanted adjustments in the middle of a shot. And don't get fixated on 180 - a concept that comes from film motion picture cameras that had very limited flexibility and always shot at 24fps. There are very few situations where 1/60 does not produce the appropriate results in a modern digital camera.

180 degree rule was made for old cinema rotational shutters, it is not relevant in electronic shutter camera

Why my sony don't have PlayMemories Home? My camera recording time only 29m 50s. In the book Rx10 IV recording up to 29m. My Camera version 2.0. Pleased help. Thanks

Sony has changed the name of their app to ImagingEdge. The recording time of all Sony models released in 2017 was limited to 29:50. What do you need help with?

@@alannguyen2010 Yes, just below the table on the page you're referencing: "Continuous movie shooting is possible for a maximum of approximately 29 minutes at a time with the camera’s default settings and an ambient temperature of approximately 25°C (77°F)".

Depending on lighting, it should meet your expectations. The zoom range will get you nice and close.

You should set the ISO manually depending on the lighting. Otherwise, the camera will continually be making visible adjustments that will be distracting while watching and make editing difficult.

Of course it does, and in order to record those changes correctly, you'll need manual ISO. I thought you were asking about video, as that's the topic of this post. All of my replies are for video recording.

I compared the RX10 II to the X70, which is their professional 1-inch. I couldn't see the difference. These are monster cameras for video. On the Zebras, did you know that the reason they have various percentage (%) levels you can set it to because some people set them according to skin color, not white, as you did with the chart. Over-exposing skin is the biggest no-no, so if I was shooting you I might set it to 70%. I believe the Rhode mic is overkill for your audience. Sony makes multi-interface shoe mics, like my favorite ECM-W1M, which are perfect for most people and provide some very nifty features. Finally, if you really want a "cinematic" look in 24, you probably want to set the shutter at 1/50th to get a slight amount of motion blur and the aperture at F4 or a bit higher at longer focal lengths. Then you want ISO 400 most likely. Net-net, you'd want a ND filter if you're going to get creative outside, or lights if you'll be shooting inside.

Thanks for the omnibus comment(s). I've mentioned the "70% for white skin, 100% for highlights" so often in the past, I gave it a rest here. Yes, always expose for skin, let the rest fall where it may, or try to adjust the brightness/shadow settings (which Sony doesn't provide, others do). Really? I think Rode's Filmmaker is the affordable wireless kit. I think that Sony mic is a toy, has very limited range and low quality in comparison. Finally, I challenge you to see the difference between 1/50 and 1/60 shutter. Did KZfaq's comment engine cut you off?

YT does have a way to shorten my comments. When editing my comment I often hit the delete selection by accident. I'm more careful now, so KZfaq will have to figure something else out! I really had nothing to say but didn't want you to think I don't care anymore ;)

Please provide more details - what's the difference between the times you can and cannot? What software are you using? How are you importing the files to your computer? How are you importing them into your video editing software?

I hope someone can help me, but my RX10 IV cant record 4k 30 fps at 60M and 100M. it can only record 4K in 25 fps. An the same on Full HD, I cant record 60 fps. It might be my SD card, but by looking at the specs for the card, it should be able to record footage at 4k 60 fps. And my camera is now updated to 2.00 software.

Are you using the PAL or NTSC setting? Only NTSC has 30.

If images look grainy, it's often because there's too little light. Let me know how it does with these settings.

I would recommend that you try to get everyone on approximately the same focal plane and that you use a wider aperture so that you have a larger depth of field.

Takes sharp pictures but extremely fragile lens due to cheap plastic internal zoom mechanism. One bump to the lens or drop and the camera is useless. Not acceptable at this price.

@@MaartenHeilbron Reading between the lines it looks like someone just lost credibility and is being paid to promote Sony..No, I was not careless at all, unlike you I am a real life user, not a paid KZfaq promo..The lens barrel mechanism has less durability than a $50 point and shoot, that is a fact.

Thanks for your suggestion, but with over a million views in 2023, you are the first person to raise this issue. Math says I'm not likely to change. On the other hand, youtube has settings to play videos both slowly and quickly.
