Update: Found the repair manual online which has some useful instructions for disassemble - www.manualslib...
Opening up the Sony TCM200 handheld tape recorder to clean the heads and restore functionality. I realized the tape wasn't advancing because the play head was so dirty. A little alcohol on a cue tip did the trick to clean the head.
Stoked to hear how many of you have one of these fun recorders! Tape players are making a big comeback it seems. Saw some Tascam 4 tracks going for hundreds online.

I think what you're calling record head is the erase head... in most tape recorders the rec head is the same than the play head

any suggestions for repairing a unit with no power?

What type of cassette are you using? Mine is playing a static sound all of a sudden and I can't figure out why. I'm scared to dismaltle it to try and find the issue just incase it's the type of cassette im using. I'm using a FUJI DR IEC 1/ Type 1

I have also tcm200 model but voice is not recording what is the problem play record button is working and cassette also moving normally but cassette is not recording voice if there any problems of both head

I got one that is working perfectly except for the speaker, the speaker can only play one song normally and suddenly turn to lower sounds, any idea how to fix it?

Hi I just purchased the TCM 400DV. For some reason, I can rewind/fast forward but when I try to play/record, there’s no internal activity. Could I be doing something wrong??

Hmm not sure.. when you hit record, a the red record light should at least be on. Is it?

If you watch the video, I mention something that could help. My guess is the tape could be getting stuck on the play head, making it too tough to spin the reels. Try cleaning the head if you haven’t already. Also check you batteries!

Unfortunately not. Most would suggest buying a new one anyways as the cost of repair may exceed the purchase price.

I'm trying to open the same recorder, but if you miss how to open the rear back, this is completely useless.

The back covering of the device is clearly removed in the video. Could you be more about what you mean by “rear back”?

@@billythemusical You don't open the recorder in your video. It's already open and I also cam here because it's a real struggle to get the back cover off.

@@timoheinrich8763 I got into how I got the cover off at 3:57, showing which screws were involved. I also put the cover back on at the end, which you can reverse engineer from there.

@@billythemusical Yes, that was helpful to be sure I got all the screws off. But didn't sit the back cover of your unit also very tightly? I needed much more force than I would have wanted to use. Just to then understand that you can actually reach some plastic hooks in the cassette area with a screw driver and push them backwards to open the Walkman much more easily.
