I've been using the Sony TX650 for about two years now and it's always been good to me. When Sony released the TX660, it was a no-brainer to get it. In this video, I talk about the things it does better than the beloved Tascam DR10L.

that sony is a hidden gem. I used to use it all the time for all of my corporate shoots back in the day and I still use it today as a back-up!

I don’t understand why Tascam and zoom haven’t made this? Same size with a really good mic and recording options.

I have a couple of these and they are great little recorders but I wouldn't use them as my primary source. The audio is fairly decent but its got a nasty compression and its all a bit nasally. The Dr10L is by far superior in that respect so I'd recommend only using these as backups or where you really can't use a DR10L. Even in ceremonies the audio from a DR10L attached on a groom for the bride I think is better than one of these down the cleavage etc. Nice little recorder though and good to have a couple in your kit bag for sure 👍

The Tascam will turn on and start recording from off. Just flick up to record when the unit is off.

Took a look at some of your videos. The Tascam is better, but the Sony is good enough for what you want to do. Hope this helps.

Nice review! I am thinking about picking up one or two. What are you recording at with it? 44khz 16bit? Are you converting it to 48? Thanks

I haven't had luck converting 44.1 into 48, using Audacity. I mean, it converts but it still doesn't sync. It seems to me (from looking around at comments) that most reviewers of the 44.1 recorders use PluralEyes to sync. That program has drift correction and can often sync 44.1 into 48.

Hey Brian, sorry for the very late response here. I am not converting it because like Chris mentioned, I'm using Pluraleyes which comes with a drift correction feature.

Why 44.1 Khz?! it does not fit the 48 Khz that your camera is recording

Thanks for the comment dude! I had both mics on him because I was gearing up to make this video lol. Normally I would just use the tascam dr10l BUT if for whatever reason I don't have time, I'll use the tx660 since it's just a clip on.

It doesn't. The input is only for headphones so you can listen to your recordings.

Uhm, I’m not sure if it’s morally right to answer this but for ‘general recording’ you want your subject to be within 6 inches for the best result possible. Hope this ‘helps’.

No, once something is recorded, it stays there until the entire file is deleted

It sounds good even for outdoor use but you're at the mercy of how loud your surroundings are. I'm not familiar with the H1N as I've never used it.

Two scenarios: Do you think it would work well in a 60 person classroom sitting about 20 feet from the lecturer who is not wearing a mic? How about if the lecturer was wearing a mic?

The lecturer wearing the mic is always the best thing. BUT if the room is quiet and the lecturer is the only one speaking, I think the 660 would pick them up just fine… obviously not as clear as opposed to having them wear it.
