Recently I repaired my Sony SLV-595 HF VCR. It had worked a few months earlier but when I tried to load a tape I noticed it had several problems, The lever that pulls the tape behind the capstain and pinch roller was seized and the drive gear to the tape transport loader was broken in half.
I was able to repair it with a little help from a few other videos on Sony tape transport repairs. Thanks to others that posted.
I thought I would also post my findings to help those that may encounter similar problems,
I also located a supplier in Canada for the gear. (Unfortunately the glue let go after a few months) The gear was $4.95 from KP Components. Part # 3-736-147-01 Left threading gear.

What can I add, just want to thank you for making a video about long storage problems you might encounter when you bring out your VCR and try to play a VHS tape. I had a problem, but mind was so bad it broke a plastic gear. I think this is an excellent well thought and recorded with an audio track. Thanks for taking the time to post your video to KZfaq

Any idea what those split rings are called like the one he works on at 20:00? Cause in CD drives those things can be tiny and I've lost them before, so it would be nice to know what they are called so I can get replacements. 😅

@@LogiForce86 I cant really tell what exactly these are called but by the looks of it you can replace them with e-clips. You can find very tiny ones depending on your axle size at r/c hobby stores.

I’ve been doing a lot of VHS transfers to digital lately. Recently, while at my Dad’s, he let me take his Sony VHS machine, this one. Good to have another one on hand. Turned out, no video, upon further inspection, it’s this very issue. I will try gluing the gear as you demonstrated. Thank you for taking the time to create this video and demonstrate this repair in a very clear and accessible way!

Hi Joe. I would highly recommend sourcing the gear. I believe I left the part number in the description. The glue held in my case for a couple of months and then let go. This is a common failure I’m learning now. Best to replace the gear with a new one.

Larry, helpful video for me while re-installing the lever take-up guide. Thank you! FYI to others, do not over tighten the guide lever nut; if it is too tight the gear that drives the lever will strip. Always make sure that the lever swings freely. I know from experience.

So I am also fixing one here in 2023. The gear was busted (blue one) and the arm was seized as well. Now that I have it back together the tape won't load at all when I put it in. Powers up fine. It's like the switch that tells it a tape is loading isn't working. Thanks for this video I'm miles ahead then where I was. Just need it to load a tape at all now

Thanks I have seen some stuff on the mode switch. I'll keep at it. My biggest frustration has been that I can't seem to figure how to remove the board completely. So far I've done all the work underneath it. It's still attached at the top left. It looks like there are 2 things plugging one board to the other but they are seemingly hard to reach with my hands if they unclip at all. First time working with board like this so I may just be being too gentle. To get to the mode switch I'll have to figure it out though. Not enough room on that side to just reach under!

Great video! I recently took out my Sony SLV-575UC after at least 5 years of storage. It accepted a tape just fine but wouldn't give it back. Upon opening that 'frozen' lever you see @1:40 was the culprit. It pulled the tape up properly then just locked in place and wouldn't let it go. It was nice finding this video just to get further confirmation. It was really hard to get it off after the nut was removed but once off and cleaned it appears to be working good. I love my 575UC

Larry thanks for posting this. I have found that "pull the tape behind the pinch roller arm" problem on several of the ones I have and one for a friend many years ago. I currently have two SLV 585HF that I teased several years back and then this week I got them out and they both wanted to eat the tape. It was not the usual above problem, in fact I'm not sure what is solution for the the problem. Here is what they both do. They will play the tape just fine, but if you rewind the tape or play in reverse it either will not go back, or it will pull the arms in and let the tape out of the cartridge. The one came back and began working fine after I took the top and the bottom off and then it now works fine. The second one that appears newer (smaller power supply area) will kind of pull the tape back inside on eject or reverse play, bit not every time, but after it has run a tape for a while and auto rewinds it it will eject cleanly then. So I don't know if it has to warm something up, or if there is another sticky part similar to the first problem most of these have but this is under neath the bottom somewhere, something is not moving quickly back in it's spot is my guess.
@tableseven8133

Larry this other one gave me a clue. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5OXmKZiy9TIg5s.html This gave me a clue at 30:40 and some other spots that had the same view of the top of the mechanism as to the problem with my SLV 585HF. The rewind side was not pulling the tape back in on eject or in reverse play. Problem is the gear mechanism between the reel hubs that big white thing at the bottom at this time line. That center part is supposed to spring back and forth. I worked it a little by hand and pushed around that center pivot clip. and now it no longer sticks and it will pull the tape back in before ejecting. No more eating tape. In the long run I assume I need to pull it off and remove the old grease. I put some Zoom spout oil on it for now. (sewing machine oil).

So glad you made this video! I'm having that exact same issue with the shaft that moves the tape toward the pinch roller. It is 'freezing up' as you say, which is preventing the tape from ejecting properly and causing it to krinkle up. It looks pretty simple to clean with your instructions. Thanks! SONY SLV-R1000

The supplier he links to is out of stock, but I found 4 on ebay, $10-$15! Just search the part number. While you have it apart, check the guide rails for cracking/warping, usually the reason they break, with the added spring tension, and I've heard the pinch roller shaft can start to get sticky too. Common problem for these models. Great video

I have SLV-585HF. the mechanism very similar. left capstan pinch gear broken in same way. I ordered replacement gear (ended up buying off ebay for 2-3x to avoid customs delay). In the interim, I glued together broken gear. I discovered the cause of broken gear. The capstan roller slider was running into a metal piece on the eject path. I found this out by assembling gears and the hang up immediately broke my newly fixed gear (36hrs of glue drying). I ended up making slight bend in metal piece to insure captain return path not affected. In addition, I found that removing the RIGHT gear in method you show bends the thin metal arms and goofs up the mechanism (ie. adds a lot of friction to mechanism). Thus, I had to pop off c-clip on right captain and unbend the arms. side note: I recall a great story in garage with Dad where he described the "C" clip as an abbreviation to "Christ Almighty" that you yell when you attempt to pry off with screw driver and it zings across the room... hoho.

During play the tape moves inside the cassette from the spool on the left to the take up spool on the right. The tape passes across the erase head first, then around the large record/play drum, and then past the audio head.

You don't need to mark them, the holes in all the moving parts will line up with those on the chassis once they're aligned (you can check using a screwdriver or piece of wire, or just look down through the hole) as well as the arrows on some of the gear teeth pointing at each other. Remember these were mass-produced so they needed to easily get the parts aligned at the factory. The holes make it easy. Those clips are best installed by putting them on the shaft and pressing down over the clip and shaft with your thumb. They're intended to be removed and reinstalled without tools, and tend to go flying otherwise. After you think everything is together right, you should spin the loading motor manually in both directions to move the mechanism from full load to full unload position, everything should go smoothly with nothing binding up. That will save you from breaking anything if you do accidentally get the timing wrong, since the motor is quite strong.

Thank you Larry H You video was super useful But let me comment that after replacing the broken blue tape load gear in the video myself, THAT's when I learned the value of the Super Glue I broke two of the little white levers, on one it was actually the little guide that goes inside the big white gear, and if it weren't for Super Glue... I don't know what would have happened... And then I put the guiding pulleys backwards (the one marked G should go on the right side looking at VHS from the top)(or is it the other one?) Then I spent a whole weekend (including COVID curfew hours) fiddling with manual tracking, sound head alignment, a mess... Ah, and the capstan dropper thingy had solid dry white grease I had to clean off and replaced with graphite... But, it works now! Beautifully. I can see Dora The Explorer and a whole other bunch of Blockbuster tapes, a Tori Amos tape and an old Ren & Stimpy recording from the 90's. I don't know why it's still called MTV but, whatever...

Now I tried to load a tape and the tape guide on the right side of the drum with the robin egg blue tape guide on it is stuck in the furthest most position from the at rest position with the tape ejected and the machine turned off. I was going to take the bottom cover off and have a look but thought I'd ask you for you advise and expertise on this unit. It' gotta jammed somewhere. Time to cook diner and then back to it. I have a question from the video we’re it runs at 6:28 you call it a guide. There are two. When my movie is ejected the two guides do not move at all. I see that yours move down as the video is ejected. Mine do not move when I insert the movie nor when I eject the movie. Why?
@larryh8072
@larryh8072 5 жыл бұрын
That's a good question and is actually the reason I created the video. If you watch the video at 14:55 there is a blue gear on the far left of the screen. This gear has a tendency to break and will make the two moving guides on the topside inoperable. The rest of the video covers how to replace that gear keeping the alignment of all of the other gearing.

When I did get the gear on and the snap on the pin - I started to put the large white gear on and as I rotated the gears it pulled that pin up making the gear vulnerable to being stripped. Do I need to glue that pin now? It has a perfect slip hole but nothing to hold it in place

That’s what I would do. Just enough to keep it in place. Hope this works out for you. It is a pretty good deck.

@@larryhuff3383 That worked for putting the new gear in but one I got it all together there was a new problem. the tape wrapped good around the head but the pinch roller stays up and that slide arm doesn't move the tape in place. Not sure what activates it. When I took off the board to fix the gears I only unplugged the 3 or 4 prong white connector. I was a little confused when I plugged it back in, there was a yellow and a white connector. marked Con 1 and con2, I even tried it in both. no change. I had lubed all the pinch roller parts. There was a few broken teeth on it's bottom gear. I had this unit when it was new. Thanks for your response

I had the same problem on my sony vcr. It was a worn out belt. You need to remove the vcr chasis because the belt is on the bottom.

My usual starting point would be to check the power supply voltages to make sure they are all as expected. You will need to download the service information for starters. While checking have a look for leaky capacitors.

The gear in mine crackled the same way. What glue did you use? because I used Crazy glue and it doesn't seem to keep the two pieces bonded.

I know what you mean. I was pretty optimistic after I glued mine at first but it only lasted a couple of weeks. I ended up buying a new gear. It was only a few dollars and I got it in only a few days. kpcomponents.co/products/sony-3-736-147-01-gear-replacement-iw220-available

Hello I have a sony vcr SLV SE20. After I insert a tape I get the snow screen and I hear the tape beginning to scrunch inside, after I took tape out the tape was a little crumpled up and I had to wind it back a bit with my finger. Can a faulty or dirty mode switch cause this? I tried cleaning the two black heads, the side of the drum including the padded wheel which spins from the side of the drum and the long thin poles that pull the tape at least some of the poles not sure if I did them all. Can you please tell me where the mode switch is located on my particular vcr? Thank you and I have Subbed to you.

Unfortunately I don't have a manual for either the VCR in my video or yours. It could be a faulty switch but more often it's something mechanical that is ceased up. Most times I find that the transport mechanism is at fault. Watching the VCR go through the loading sequence should tell you allot.

What kind of glue did you use on the blue gear?
@larryh8072
@larryh8072 6 ай бұрын
Hard to believe there are folks still watching this video. I used a blue coloured crazy glue but I guess any cyanoacrolyte adhesive would work. You should really try to get a replacement gear though. The glue didn’t hold for long and I ended up ordering a replacement gear after only a week or so of use. I wouldn’t advise gluing the gear today. Best to find a replacement.

@@larryh8072 Thanks. People will still watch it if it is still relevant to them. I blew off the dust my VCR recently in order to play an old tape I knew I had and wanted, but the VCR ate it. Thus I discovered the blue gear was broken.

I believe I put the supplier details for the blue gear in the description. To the best of my knowledge this is a super common problem and the gear should be available still. Also, not sure if you follow 12voltvids on KZfaq but he shows how to do this repair much better than I did. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sK6Zjch-zJ7af5c.html&pp=ygUOU29ueSBibHVlIGdlYXI%3D
