Repairing a Sony SLV E700 VCR VHS Recorder/Player that is dead and has no power.
I bought a Sony VCR VHS player from the car boot sale for £4, if I can fix it it will sell for between £40-50. I was told by the lovely lady that it works perfectly and she was only using it last week but doesn't have the remote. Guess what??? Another faulty electrical item from the car boot sale!
I plugged it in and it had no power going through it and there was also a tape stuck in it that wouldn't eject even after fixing the power. No way was this machine working in any way before I bought it.
Let's see how we get on...
These videos are for entertainment only. I am not a professional and just like trying to fix things. Do not copy some of the things I do, as they sometimes can be dangerous, if you are not comfortable with electronics.

I have a vcr like this I've had since a teenager. I hope it can be fixed. Thank you for making this video! :)

Great you got the power up - these VCRs are so mechanical - just probably need to eject and start the loading over. Even splice the tape together if it breaks on removing. There's probably nothing wrong with it now. Hopefully - just reload a tape. Great video. Same problem with mine, NO JUICE - dead as a door nail, mate! This video makes me a bit more fearless on repairs of this kind. THANKS again!

Nicely labelled pcb at 6:20. Very helpful of Sony. A lot of these are made in Europe which is cool to see!

I've learnt alot from your video, thanks! I'm trying to fix a sony slv-f990 which has a similar power board to yours with the metal can although the big 400V cap is inside the can unlike yours so you have to keep opening up the can to test it. I think the metal tabs around the can are part of the circuit too. But anyway, still haven't got mine working yet but I've changed all the caps on the secondary and I'm about to do the same with the caps inside the can although I'm going to leave the 400V one for now.

Thanks for this. I recently had an SLV-E7 die on me, leaky caps in power supply. I was able to repair it by recapping (I had to replace all the caps except the big 300V one in the primary), and this video helped me a lot.

Glad you found the video useful and helped you fix yours. Good stuff well done! Its good to keep this old tech going rather than chucking it in landfill. 👍👍

@@RetroElectronicRepair Agreed. Also the SLV-E7 is the only one I own able to playback both ntsc and pal vhs tapes on a pal tv. It also has color system selection for video output, however despite having a rudimentary frame buffer for stills (being a 4 head vcr) I don't think that it also converts 60hz into 50hz (haven't really tested that though).

When they're in a cabinet where it can get very hot capacitor degradation can happen faster too

The blue gear ⚙️ is probably broken, though awesome job fixing those caps. Love from Hunza Valley Pakistan 💓

A good tip for you: When dealing with self tapping screws that screw into plastic it's a good idea to place them in the hole and reverse them until they click into the hole and pre-existing thread, before actually screwing in. That way you're not ripping the existing thread out of the plastic and boring another one in which ruins the thread, resulting in the dreaded "just turning" screw!

That's a great tip that I always do. I must include that in a video. I do it with all screws.

Hi, great video, can i ask, I've looked a RS before, but they only seem to sell in bulk (100+). Can't find packs of 5?
@RetroElectronicRepair
@RetroElectronicRepair Жыл бұрын
Sorry for late reply. There is currently a shortage of a lot of components but RS do usually have packs of 5,10,25 available but it can depend on the component. If I can't get them from RS or they are too expensive on the other sites I will generally just buy them from eBay.

Hi, great video! We have a matsui VHS player that won’t do anything. We checked the fuse in the plug, that was fine. The fuses inside the VHS player were also fine. Any ideas what might be the problem?

Is it showing any lights or signs of life at all? If not it's probably a failed capacitor in the power supply circuit. But you need to be very careful checking in there as there are some very high voltage capacitors that could kill you.

Did you mean what values or what brand? I can't remember now what the values were but I'll either use pull capacitors out of spare boards I have laying around or will buy new ones from rs-components.com

#50:00 For safety, you probably should have put that plastic shield back over the PSU board before screwing the metal bottom back on!
