What settings did you run on the X85J? I usually use the cinema mode with most the motion settings turned off. For me the colors popped so much for than the Samsung AU8000 I had, which I returned the samsung.

X85J 75inch is the sweet spot for 4K HDR! Pixels will not look stretched out with lower res content like 720p or below, just saying🤷🏾‍♂️. And the price is good also!

Confirmed. I posted an in-store side-by-side video comparison of these two TVs earlier and I got the exact same impression as yours, so your X85J is NOT defective as some commenters here said. I bought the 50" X80J with the VA panel and if you're viewing it straight-on, it looks the same as the 43" that you reviewed here. @@TechSteve well it’s kind of like using the right tool for the job. I haven’t watched a TV in “standArd” mode since I started buying them. Especially in todays streaming world where we can go from a 420 KZfaq video to Dolby vision music video in a few clicks. Each TV should be OPTIMIZED not throttled to make fair comparison. Just saying 🤷🏽‍♂️

@@Duy11A4 I own both VA and IPS X80J. VA has more contrast when viewed straight on, but washes out very quickly at a slight angle. The IPS display is more saturated and has good viewing angles but suffers from excessive clouding.

The slot below the X85J’s Sony logo actually houses an LED light that lights up when you use the remote control. I’m guessing it might also house an old-gen infrared receiver to help improve receiving signals from the remote control even though it is already connected via Bluetooth.

exactally the 2 TV's I was pondering to buy. I'm still a couple of weeks away from the cheaper x80j. I just want good hdr for gaming on my series s xbox. I'm not so concerned with 120 hrtz. Though it would be nice to tick all the boxes.

I got the 75" 80j and I'm really happy about it, before that I tested a samsung frame , samsung au8000 , tcl forgot the model and a nanocell lg and I'm really happy about getting the Sony, I love it, for movies I think it's the best of the tvs I tried, for gaming i'm ok with 60 hz and I don't care to spend more for 120hz

@@erricacane9566 put it in cinema mode, disable the picture motion if it's still enabled and play with contrast and brightness until it works for you, usually both on high works better. The colors in cinema mode are already great

If it may be possible for you to upload an update to this video, comparing these two TVs in both HDR and SDR in Standard and calibrated modes. I have a feeling that the X85J with its higher brightness may catch up to the X80J especially in HDR. Just my theory. Sony will not reveal it, but these two TVs may have come from different panel suppliers. The X80J may be one of those special TVs that punch way above its rated specs. The salesmen at the store where I did a side-by-side comparison of these two TVs were equally surprised by the better OTB picture of the X80J. And they see these two TVs together everyday.

@@TechSteve In South Africa the 80J is about R13,999 and the 85J 15,999. A 2k difference. Lighting hit my house TVs so I moved the Sony I had to the house and got the 80J for the series X - figured since my other sony was fine the 80J would be fine too. Haven't set it up yet but looks good for some spare time gaming. Like Mr. Charly with 2 kids, work and wife, the man cave gaming isn't at maximum :)

I have the x80j tv and my bezel is identical to the x85j tv that you are pointing out in your video. I'm just curious that you may have got them mixed up. But I'm sure you checked everything out before the set up. Also I think you can look at the two HDMI 2.1 inputs. Great video though👍. I'm just wondering why my bezel has the same design as the x85j tv. Thank you.

this is a tough one, overall the picture and colors look better on the x80j but the black levels on the x85j look far superior..it basically comes down to the price difference, is it worth the extra cost for the x85j 🤔

The IPS panel still the best . except for oled, which I think is a legit improvement. Everything else like local-dimming and brightness and 8k and VA panels all seem like marketing.

It’s a recording. Some parts i increase the f stop on the camera to pull out more details but the playing field is still the same. But it’s your choice what you see and like plus you can see in a store with a beautiful demo.

Addition to what Tech Steve said : every part of the chain from his video production, editing, transmission and finally received by you (meaning the Tv/monitor/mobile display) is influencing what you see at the end. Meaning making conclusion by so many variables is not relevant.

I owe the X80J and am mostly satisfied with it. I will say that I usually use Custom mode on my TVs but recently thought the contrast was off and switched back to Standard and brightness/contrast was better to my eyes. I really want to step up to the A80J.

I really enjoyed my X85J. I kept it for about a few weeks but then couldn’t get over how good the X90J look, especially with the upscaling and colours. But with the minimal price difference between the X80j and X85j, the X85j is a better buy

Tech Steve...Great video comparision and review. It looks like the Sony X80J has a better picture quality than the X85J. The only thing that stood out on the X85J was better motion clarity. I am thinking these type of comparisions would be more accurate if you could actually test more than one of each TV. When A consumer goes out and buys a TV, is he/she getting the "luck of the draw"? Meaning, are multiple TV's of one model all the same? Or not? My guess is that they are all different in picture quality and to a certain extent, build quality. As a side note, I just had an LG TV break after less than 3 years in service. No picture...but sound works (A common problem with LG TV's). Previous to that, I had another LG TV that failed in under 12 months. Still have a Samsung LED 1080 going strong for 10 years now that is used everyday. Bottom line....Looking for a decent TV to replace the broken LG. Hoping for something that will last longer than 1-3 years. PS....I subscribed. Thanks.

I love my Samsung QN85A, it has the best picture of any TV that I reviewed. Accept for blooming on logos. But the picture is crispy, bright and the colors are amazing. But that’s just me. The funny thing is most people use IPS computer monitors but don’t like the TVs. 🤦🏽‍♂️

@@TechSteve yeah Steve when you really love TV's we tend to get nit picky about every little thing. But I'm at the place as long as I can enjoy the content I watch I don't stress about certain flaws a TV might have. I've heard it said many times no TV is perfect and all of them have pros and cons. I just sit back and enjoy the TV's I have and don't worry about the minor stuff.

When you buy TVs for reviews out of your own pocket you have to be very selective. You can easily buy a $1000 TV and never make your money back. It has to be popular or sponsored

The X80J has great, vibrant colors in bright scenes. But the second a dark scene or blacks come in, it is terrible. If you watched a movie like batman on this tv you would think the tv was just turned off half the time with sound coming out of it.

The X85J is much better. I bought the X80J first and loved it in bright scenes or scenes with very little blacks, it is spectacular. Then i watched a few movies with alot of night shots, and the X80J gets a big weakness exposed. It is horrible for dark scenes. This TV would be extremely frustrating to watch a Batman marathon on. Spend the extra $200 and get the XJ85

Hey steve...watched the demo of the horse and the saturation you noticed on the demo video and I ran it on my x900f tv that is a far superior tv and was getting the same picture as the x85j and also ran it on my oled screen on my phone and same thing. Think x80j isn't reproducing the correct image even if you think it looks better but I ran that test on all my tvs and monitors and same thing your getting on the x85j. Still think the 85j is king.

From 05:27-05:40 the blacks on the x85j look a bit better while colors popping very similar on both tvs; at 08:05 with a similar picture content the blacks on the x80j look way better. And at 07:05 the x80j wins also. It seems to heavily depend on the picture content which tv shows the better picture. On my x85j i somehow have the same experience. Almost every Dolby Vision content looks washed out, regardless which setting is used. Some HDR content on the other hand just looks stunning (not only in bright scenes but also with dark scenes). The biggest issue with the x85j from my experience is the very narrow viewing angle. Even slightly moving away from the center has a strong visible effect. In my use case it's not that big of a problem cause I watch while lying in bed. So I would not recommend the TV for families who watch from different positions all around the living room.

I'm looking at 50", but it looks like both have VA, which apparently has bad viewing angles. Is VA that bad on an angle?

I own a 50X80J (VA) and I can confirm that it gets very washed out beyond 45 degrees

It’s always a safe bet to buy a model that’s very popular due to its lower price range which means it’s manufactured more frequently which in turn means kinks are discovered and ironed out unlike very high end models produced less frequently. Since it’s a Sony which has excellent quality control can’t go wrong with the buy.

IPS Panels are known for their brilliant color reproduction and that is obvious in a side by side comparison with a VA Panel TV here. I am just not surprised, and would pick an IPS over VA just for this anyday.

It's weird maybe IPS is better after all 🤣 it seemed to have improved after VA's hotstreak. It seems to handle modestly to brightly lit better base on other reviews of other ips vs VA like nanocell vs qled VA. Granted it seems like there's no local dimming VA for comparison sadly. Ips of lesser qled seem to look even better then qn90 at bestbuy. It's crazy but I'll still defend VA with LD because the more spec out TVs are VA and my tcl VA still looks sublime on day to day use compared to past nightmare experience with IPS monitor and their glow. Perhaps something crazy like 3000 zone IPS with great processing could be the answer for non OLED route, I see LG qned sort of have the idea but their best efforts still lies on OLED in reality.

I love my X85J, I got it for 799 only $50 more than the X80J at the time.... but I still can’t get Disney Plus app to work, I’ve tried everything you recommended nothing works, so I have to watch thru the PS5.

What a very good video. You are a natural my man. Maybe one day you can represent my music someday. I have the X80J model. I was going to ask you if it wss a move up to go to the X85J? It is a hundred bucks cheaper on this one website at $498. But after looking at this video, the picture was clearly much better on the X80J. Please let me know what you think.Thanks. MRT :)

If that's the X85J on the left then I'd be returning it because it looks like you've got a bad panel. No way should the VA panel have that much backlight bleed. Mine certainly doesn't. Every review I saw before I bought mine commented on the great (for led) contrast levels on the X85J.

I add extra exposure to my camera settings to bring out the details, you may not see it under normal conditions. But this my finding and no sugar coating.

only this review against x85js result .. better I decide once I compare myself in showroom.. (MAINLY COLOR AND VIEWING ANGLE BETWEEN BOTH).. but thanks for this review which will allow me to choose with more conscious .. if u r right and I will definitely comment back for ur effort ..

I think because VA is very nice on edge lit. NOT direct lit??? Just my thought's?? Because all of my VA panel tv before all are edge lit. I think just adjusting brightness will do for x85j??? Just bring it to LOW like 50 below. To reveal the beauty of x85j.

Little bit a confusing too on backlight and brightness settings. Theres no separate settings for that. The brightness settings is also backlight. I think x85j can get update for that for u to be able catch the true beauty of it.

On this video, some videos looked better on the X80J...but x85j have better blacks. 5:03 purple flaring from the strings are more obvious on the left tv than on the right...

We bought the 80, and later got an 85 for downstairs. Everyone agrees the 85 is a better tv across the board, noticeable difference in picture quality.

X80J is a 43” IPS and the x85 is 50” VA

IPS will always have some advantages over VA in gaming but VA panel will win somehow most cases but i just wish x80j is 120hz or 2.1 would be a great budget tv for PS5. but i will choose IPS panel of sony over LG IPS same level(budget) because of the processor. great video comparison thanks.

I was disappointed when i heard the X85J was VA panels, the 43 inch one was tempting but I had to get the 2020 49 inch LG nano 85 instead.

What about 55 x89j?? I saw in the store and thinking of purchasing. What's the difference between 85 and 89? It's crazy. Why they doing all this division. I think it's stupid.
