Auto Rotate has been fixed, it was a bug, I've got my Sony today and it's pretty impressive, the auto-rotate has no bug as you show on the screen. Great phone and a very decent camera as well.

I have the original Xperia 1. It's a fantastic phone. The 4k 21:9 screen is very nice and the best part is there isn't a stupid camera hole in the screen. I prefer bezels to have the camera instead of the dumb gimmicky notch on the screen.

You had to say the sony's advantages against the s21 ultra. Like Faster in loading apps and games. 4k display, headphone jack. 20 FPS pictures with AE and AE.. Front facing 360° stereo speakers. No punch hole on the screen and a few more.... Thanks

Had iPhones, Samsung's and switched to the Xperia 1 ii last August and I can say hands down the best phone I've ever used and super user friendly. It's the little things for me like the LED light on the front that flashes certain colours for different noticications when it's on silent. How fast it charges and lasts for ages and the speakers are so loud and everything else is just amazing from the camera to the speed of opening apps etc deffo be sticking with Sony they are a beast ❤️

This phone is genuinely as close to perfect as it gets.

Marq, I'm glad you brought this review up. I think it's one of the most underrated pieces of electronics today. Sony has been in the business for quite some time now and I'm not sure they've really gained the notoriety they've deserved. The xperia is the perfect niche for them imo because it deals in small component hardware which they are more than capable of handling with their infrastructure. Just my opinion.

It just sounds so convenient to have all the features. I like watching videos at night before bed and the great screen with front facing speakers were the best thing I enjoyed on the HTC One M8. I can't wait to have it on this phone. I use headphone jacks all the time at work.

Need a deep pocket for this. Literally and figuratively.

I have this phone. They fixed all the quirks and app screen incompatibilities. It's such a great phone! I got the phone in September (it was the fastest I could get it shipped in the US. I couldn't get it before then) and everything was fixed by late November. No flaws with the software at all . I love this phone ! Cool review

The slow Auto-Rotate is I guess to prevent accidental rotation when you're just slightly moving when in bed tossing and turning etc. It was a feature in previous Xperia models that it can "learn" wheter you want it to rotate or you're just moving from laying on your back to laying on your side.

After watching this review a dozen times I got the phone myself. Love the phone overall. I think they updated the software since the auto rotate on my phone isnt that slow. Coming from my G7 I wish they had a volume mixer for all apps instead of all media etc.

What we need is more compact phones! Still rocking my xz1 compact without any issues!

A few issues with it but I still like it. Have previously used the Samsung Note 8, S10, and now I'm currently using the S21+ and Sony Xperia 1 III concurrently. Always loved the 21:9 aspect ratio and was considering the Xperia 1 II 2 years back, but held off for the Mk III for it's 70mm to 105mm upgrade. The Mk III is a good phone and I prefer it over my S21+ (mainly because I'm bored of Samsung) and the Sony phone is vastly different than any other Android phone on the market, but there are some issues with it which many reviewers do not cover (basically most or all of the reviews on KZfaq). #1: Camera Eye / Face Lock On Basically the AF and lock-on are good, and the 20fps with re-autofocus is working well. But I've found that in certain instances, the face / eye lock on and tracking do not focus correctly. When the option for this is enabled, the camera can detect my dog's eye 100% of the time, but does not focus on the eye.... It focues on his snout or nose. This causes the image to be visibly out of focus. However, turning the eye / face lock on feature off, and simply tapping on my dog's face solves this issue. Also, the object tracking works well too! #2: Camera 20FPS As said earlier, the 20FPS works well and the re-autofocus does work too. However, in the default auto mode (meaning in BASIC mode), when using 20FPS, the shutter is definitely too slow for medium to fast moving objects (such as a dog walking at normal speeds in good lighting conditions like in a living room). This holds true for humans as well. Basically, the images will turn out blurry because the shutter speed was kept slow (1/40 to 1/80) while keeping a low ISO too. This is not an issue in absolutely bright conditions like at a dog park with direct sunlight, but anything else and the phone will revert to prefer a slower shutter speed to keep the ISO low. For an average user, this would be an issue, but having some experience using manual mode on DSLRs, this slow shutter issue can be avoided by using the phone's MANUAL mode and setting the ISO and Shutter Speed manually while enabling 20FPS. However, it is understandable that the masses may find this tedious or too complex for smartphone photography. #3 Camera - Videography and Cinema Pro [Basic Camera Mode - Not Cinema Pro] One issue I found the most irritating is the fact that when taking a video using the front facing camera, you cannot swipe / toggle to the back camera like how you can do on any Samsung phone. If you're taking a video using the front camera, that's the only camera you can use, and the same thing goes for the back cameras. Furthermore, when taking a video using the back cameras, regardless of whatever resolution you choose (4k, 1080 60, 1080, 720), you can't switch cameras while recording. I know for a fact that this is possible on my old Samsung S10 (only in FHD - definitely not possible in 4K 60), but at least they had the option to switch cameras while recording). Also, while the Mk III can clearly record in 4K up to 120FPS, the option is not available in BASIC mode (the default camera application). It only offers a max of 4K 30FPS (or something, but definitely not 60FPS). To use 4K 60FPS or 120FPS, you have to use the Cinema Pro application. More on that below. [Cinema Pro] On a side not, I find their menu system weird for a smartphone. For instance, everything starts with a project. To create a video, a project has to be opened first. If certain settings change, a new project may have to be opened. An example: using the 24mm lens with 4K 60FPS, a project is created. Using another lens, another project has to be created, using a different frame rate, a project has to be created, and it continues. However, as good as the ability to record in 4K 60FPS or 120FPS is, the Cinema Pro application is basically useless for the main reason that ISO CANNOT BE ADJUSTED ONCE YOU START RECORDING. I own a Sony A7 and I play around with the video mode sometimes. I know that during recording, it's mainly the ISO that's adjusted to compensate for different lighting conditions on the fly (not shutter or aperture). In Cinema Pro's case, since ISO AND SHUTTER SPEED cannot be adjusted once records starts, you're basically fixed with one exposure. If you're outside and point to the sky, you're basically stuck with a blown out screen. If you're indoors and point to a darker place, you're stuck with underexposed frames. That being said, unless I'm in an environment with consistent lighting, I'm stuck with the BASIC default app and limited to either 4K 30FPS, or 1080 60FPS (I normally stick with the 1080 60). #4 General Usage I'm quite sure it's because of the screen, but the phone gets hot, really hot. Compared to the same tasks on my S21+, the Sony definitely gets way hotter then it should. I attribute this to the 888 chip as well but who knows. Things like Lightroom, transferring files to the SD card, KZfaq, Facebook, etc. Also, just to add on the burst photos with 20FPS. When viewing them using Google photos (the default photo viewer), there's a bug with scrolling between the bursts. This is prominent with bursts of 20 images, or 100 images. But it's a small issue. Also, with the attributes about the camera mentioned above, using the Pro mode for everything photography related really brings out the best of the cameras, albeit 12 megapixels. Having a steady hand helps too, seeing as for most shots, there's a weird issue that the phone predere long exposure times for images that are clearly in daytime. Maybe it's related to the fact that there is no dedicated night mode or for HDR, and that the phone auto detects the scene you're in. Basically expect long exposure times when there shouldn't be any. Just to add, in night mode, with a steady hand, the images are as good as those on my S21+ with its 64 megapixel sensor. One thing I have to give credit to is the colour accuracy of the phones cameras. Compared to Samsung and Iphones (both old and new), this is by far the most accurate representation of the original scene. Grass looks like grass at the dog park (on the Samsung, its always oversaturated). One other thing, their flashlight is oddly not at it's brightest setting and this cannot be adjusted by the user.... Finally, and weirdly enough, there's no option to turn Fast Charging off..... I don't like to fast charge my phones because I like them to stay away from heat as much as possible, so I have no choice but to use a slow charger (5V 1A or 1.5A). Overall, I still appreciate something different as compared to Samsung's UI. This phone has many issues which I believe are software related (toggle 120HRZ, toggle night mode, toggle front/back camera while recording, toggle fast charging, toggle NFC on/off, toggle flashlight brightness, etc). As for their hardware, it's almost perfect. All that they're missing is a configurable extra button (currently the Google assistant button is fixed) and higher megapixels on all cameras. With all it's shortcomings, I'm still using this as the daily driver over my S21+ (the S21+ is a damn good phone fyi. It's really refined - better screen, better camera in most cases, etc).

Just bought this second hand from CEX UK store £355. Absolute bargain. 256gb storage and can expand with 1tb. Screen is awesome 4k 120hz and after a couple of hours yesterday updated it to android 13. Samsung have become like apple taking features away from phones, look at Sony it shows you can continue to include 'enthusiast' features and make a profit

Having expandable memory is not an 'enthusiast' feature. It's a practical thing that every phone should support. By labelling everyday useful features such as microsd expansion and a 3.5 mm jack as enthusiast features, we are letting companies get away with omitting them.

Having a notification led, headphone jack and expandable storage should not be considered as ,, enthusiast" it should be necessity...

Periscope style camera zoom is actually a good setup, rather than having multiple lens with multiple sensors.

There is just something about Sonys simplistic design that makes me fall in love with this phone, dat price tag doe.

Soo. For you out there that haven't owned a Sony phone. Let me tell you a bit here that these (short term) tests do not reveal. I had multiple Sony phones, last one being the XZ3. I decided to then try a Samsung S20+. While the Samsungs are nice, there are just quite a few things Sony does a lot better: 1) The adaptive brightness on Samsung straight out sucks compared to the Sony phones. Annoys me how often I have to manually adjust it. And yes, this is with no screen protector covering the sensor. 2) The camera settings on the Samsung lacks the option to scale down the quality of the pictures you take. If you like me just want to save your pictures in 4 or 6MP instead of a crazy resolution that takes up all your space - no option for that. I find that extremely annoying. 3) The fingerprint reader on the back of the XZ3 was an extremely nice feature. Once you get used to it, it is extremely hard to go back to anything else. The facial recognition on the S20+ never did it for me.. 4) Overall, you can just tell that Sony put a lot more effort into customizing their software. It has a lot of options of tweaking stuff to your liking that Samsung doesn't offer. 5) Sony phones has a smart charging feature that will detect your usual battery charging pattern and will stop the charging at around 80%, only to charge the remaining final 20% right before you usually disconnect it, say early in the morning. This ensures you do not damage the battery or shorten the life of it. For me, what got me buying a Samsung was the ease of being able to repair it almost anywhere in the world. I was traveling outside Europe and broke my screen on the XZ3 - was impossible to find a place to get it repaired and had to send it back by DHL.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos Marques. Your way of speaking, the presentation, the editing, it's great. I know the 1iii is targeted at a very specific audience, and I will never have one because of the price, but I absolutely love Sony phones! I have had multiple Sony phones (T62u, W810, T226, Xperia TL, & the 10iii), I've also had Motorolas, Samsungs, and even iPhones. I keep coming back to Sony phones. They have features (enthusiast or not) that other companies simply don't have. I honestly prefer the pictures that the Sony phones take. I prefer to see things exactly how they really are. I don't want photos that are over-processed. I can also say that the headphone jack, a slot for an SD card, notification LED, and the very lightly modified version of Android are big keys for me. From my experience, Sony phones JUST WORK! My Samsung crashed and needed to be restarted multiple times per day, the Motorola was reliable, but just kinda ho-hum. The iPhone that I was issued at my job simply does NOT WORK. The iPhone regularly does not save my work (spreadsheets, text documents, and photos) , it will not connect to Bluetooth devices, the calendar on it is often multiple days off, and there are many times that it does not ring when people call. So, yeah, my experiences with Sony phones have been excellent- far superior to any other phone I've had. I never get a flagship phone, but I can find lower-range models that are every bit as dependable.

Ok, just imagine if this phone would have been a Samsung phone. Everyone would have been like "this is the best phone of the year, the no-compromise ultimate flagship". But, it is branded Sony so it gets to be the ultimate "enthusiast" phone :(.

Hold on though, that delayed rotate feature might actually be amazing for an enthusiast. Think about it, if you're the type of person who normally turns off auto-rotate, you can now effortlessly go wide screen when you occasionally do need to use it. So its basically makes using your phone flat easier than it typically would, you have to be doing it intentionally to trigger. Hope that makes sense

It costs the same as S21 Ultra, but packs a 30W charger in the box, has a 3.5mm port and microsd slot. Guess which is better.

I used to have Xperia Z3 and Z5, a nice option in the camera was that you could connect two or more phones and use one phone to operate another, great option for filming from several perspectives

MKBHD, The dual aperture feature was kept in S10 line as well. I own an S10+ and it has the plastic diafragm that regulates the amount of lights that goes into the sensor.

Hi Marques! Great review. question: please let me know if you can comment on the quality of the stabilization on the Sony cameras on this phone. Is their Stabilizing system as good as Apple's? Also, you described other Sony cameras that you have used and were not so enthusiastic about the color the noise, the sharpness. But the pictures you showed were much better than you realized in my opinion. I was looking at the center of the photos you showed of your larger camera on a tripod and it looked perfect. Obviously the whole photo can't be perfectly sharp edge to edge in most cases due to the lens position. But that is not the camera's fault if depth of field is too shallow and if there is flare or some other user factor going on. Please react if you can. And I'm anything but a Sony Fan Boy. I don't usually understand their menus etc. and have put off buying most of their gear for years.

well, for the cameras, you actually missed to say, you can shot in RAW with all three lenses. So enthusiast can punch the colors to their liking ;)
