Sony's flagship TV, the Z series is certainly impressive. Here's why we think the Z series deserved to be called a game changer.
What makes Sony's Z series TV such a big deal is a combination of its backlight system, which the company calls Backlight Master Drive, and its processing, called 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme.
With Backllight Master Drive, Sony has brought its Z series TVs dangerously close to OLED TVs in terms of black level and shadow detail, while exceeding OLEDs brightness capabilities for a 4K HDR experience that you really must see to believe.

Just bought this TV after comparing the A1E and the ZD9 in store. ZD9 is by far the best TV I have ever owned. If I want perfect blacks I'll switched the TV off! :) Absolutely love it.

Shopped them all, got the XBR75Z9D, price now reduced to $7K, zero regrets. 4K HDR content is amazing, Planet Earth II is the best picture I have ever seen. OLEDS have better off axis viewing , but the Z9Ds have a better, brighter picture, the 75" has 800 zones (FALD) and a dedicated processor (Backlight Master Drive). I would take OLED over any other LED/LCD, but the Z9Ds are the one exception, best picture you can buy, period !!

The Sony z9d is still the best LCD led TVs ever made in my opinion the brightness the colors the balcks everything is so good with the processing its fantastic even tho the q9fn had a higher contrast ratio overall with local dimming side by side the z9d looked deeper because of the processing is what I can think and the algorithm it's just outstanding

What I dont like about LG oled is the black crush and the clipped highlights. Whats the pont in having perfect blacks if shadow detail is compromised? Seems like this is the best 4k HDR tv for now

exactly which makes it the best TV overall. Its a perfect example of marketing and engineering coming together to create an inferior product. Wow people with technology enough and they'll buy your product without really understating the ins and outs. Perfect black means I can't see shit in some scenes where there is no such thing as perfect black maybe except for outer space.

if you want to enjoy HDR this TV is for you it hits somewhere around 1800 to 2000 nits, OLED maxes out at 800 nits, so if you want the best blacks get an OLED but if you want the best of both but close enough to pure blacks get the Z9D. This TV is based of Sony Trimaster tech and its future proof since it will be getting a Dolby Vision update hope it get the HLG support too, either way great TV.

As of 10/1/2017 the price on both the A1E OLED and the Z9D at most online retailers is $3999. With that said expect some special pricing for the upcoming holidays @ around $3499. Both are top of the line televisions and rank #1 in both OLED and LCD across all manufacturers.

I have this 65” XBRZ9D. It’s is amazing and yes pricey even compared to OLED. No OLED on the market right now gets bright enough for proper HDR requirements. I’ve seen an A1E and Z9D right next to each other, and in my opinion the Z9D blows its doors off especially in 4K HDR. Perfect Blacks since each pixel is it’s own light source on OLEDs is amazing, but having 640 local dimming zones, (he said 630, I’ve heard 640 on 65” and more on 75” and of course even more on 100”) makes it really close to perfect blacks. Vizio’s new P Series Quantum only has 192 local dimming zones, which is still really impressive, so 640, amazing. If you have a bright room where you plan to use this TV in, stay away from OLED. If you plan to always use your TV in a dark environment, OLED may be ok for you although you won’t be getting the recommend brightness (nits, 1000-4000 cd/m2) for HDR. OLED also scares the crap out of me with temporary and permanent image retention (burn in). OLED does have a much wider viewing angle compared to the VA panel on this Z9D if you have a wide viewing area, as the image starts to degrade at a 20° or wider viewing angle. Of cours an IPS LED panel TV would give you a wider viewing angle over a VA LED panel, but won’t look as good as contrast ratio are not great with IPS technology. Both technologies have its ups and downs, but after all the research I’ve done and seeing OLEDs right next to the Z9D, the Z9D is a way better TV watching experience especially if you are going to watch a lot of 4k HDR content, and I would think someone considered dropping $2500+ for a TV would be.

The Z9D is a lot more expensive than an oled, but at least you don't have to babysit it and worry about burn in. I was going to buy an oled until I did some serious research. Don't let anyone tell you that burn-in on oleds is nearly impossible. I found plenty of horror stories on avsforum with pictures. The oled technology isn't mature enough. I may buy one in 5 years or so but definitely not now. This Z9D would be a great alternative but unfortunately it doesn't come in a 55 inch.

I spent a LONG time trying to decide between the LG oled75g6p and this TV (75Z9D), with my sole deciding factor simply being: picture quality. First off, OLED doesn't necessarily mean better. It's all about the tech behind the screen. The backlighting on this tv which gives you peak brightness is unmatched anywhere else. and the blacks (while not as good as OLED) are still REALLY black and not too noticeable when compared to OLED. This tv is (pound for pound) the BEST tv on the market. Other things to consider about this TV: - It also includes HDR (same as the top OLED out there). - Not as thin as some OLEDs, but still looks great when mounted to a wall. The LG G6P's base (when folded back for mounting) still leaves about 8 inches of space between the tv and wall. I didn't like that. The Sony sis nicely against the wall and STILL allows for access to the back of the tv thanks to amazing input placement design (hdmi, usb). - It Includes 3D (which both LG and Sony have discontinued on all 2017 models). - The upscaling feature on this TV outputs your HD bluerays beautifully on it's 4K display. Pound for Pound, this is the best tv on the market. Period.

Hey guys ... is the ZD9 really worth it, or is it hype ? I mean I know everyone is raving about them, but looking at the specs, I am really not that impressed with it ... contrast is quoted around 8000/1, and although good, nothing really spectacular ... brightness yes, it does reach some great peaks, but the most important metric for me in this regard is sustained full field brightness, and at a quoted 650 nits, although good, it’s nothing to write home about ... the 930E does 750 on that score ... my Panasonic DX902B smashes it 850 nits ... it does have 600 plus local dimming zones and it has a great local dimming algorithm apparently, and often is lauded as the best LCD ever, but is that real or is it just hype ? Any thoughts by anyone are greatly appreciated ... thank you guys ... the reason I am asking is because I found a good deal on a used one

For goodness sakes!! I'm starting to think that digital trends is being paid by LG. This hands down is the best TV on the market right now. OLED is such shit I can't even believe they are even making a comparison. I've spent 8 grand on top of the line 4K models and spent countless hours analyzing these tvs with actual 4K blurays and OLED is not what it's hyped to be. Does it have serious potential absolutely; is it the future? I would agree with that but it's not anywhere close to that yet. Maybe 2017 models will change this but as of 2016 it's not there. The claim everyone brings to the table is that it has "perfect black" lmao oh man I'm so sick and tired of hearing that bullshit! It doesn't matter if it has perfect black if it cannot translate "perfect black" to a good picture. Nobody talks about this even digital trends whom must be bought out to sway the sheep. This is currently OLEDS issue because the hardware isn't there!!!! I'm going to break this down for all of you OLED hypists! 4K is all about HDR and you need brightness to reproduce and increase that dynamic scaled picture. Brightness is the top score which allows the contrast ratios to be relevant in a larger scale such as HDR. Current OLEDs are dark not bright and even cranked up to the max in comparison to its competition. So you aren't getting anywhere near an awesome experience as tvs that can hit over a thousand nits consistently throughout content playback. The issue that this introduces is that consumers turn up the light all the way up on OLEDS to try and get more dynamic range and here is where the tv starts to fall flat on its face! The noise grain starts to appear, the motion blur and judder becomes nauseating. The hardware isn't there to process the information and take advantage of the panel. It takes a dark scene where let's say a 2k intermediate is played back and where the information isn't displayed you get pixelated noise not a perfect black pixel and as you move into a different section of the dark scene where it has digital information then you see the pixel shut off. This adherent problem along with color banding makes dark scenes look awful whether it's cranked up on brightness or not. This explanation is fact because I've demoed this time and time again with my friends top of the line OLED and my 4K tv. We have even tested this in stores with various equipment and blurayplayer models. This tv has the best picture bar none! You have to analyze all aspects of a tv not just one thing like you damn OLED ppl do. The blacks and contrast levels are absolutely stunning I'd dare to say it translates the digital information better so the contrast levels are displayed in a more uniform fashion. Now I did say that I can see how OLED is the future I'm not disputing that what I am arguing is that the OLED tvs that you can get your hands on are not as good as ppl say they are. I use strong words because it's needed to break through this misconception that ppl have about these tvs. I can't wait and embrace when OLED has the hardware to crank up its display capabilities and then it can actually deliver. I think that's what Sony is attempting to do by slapping their X1 chip into the OLED panel. Also the X1 chip by far is the most powerful and does the best job in enabling a LED panel. Now at max max to the top settings it's starts to hinder by a small percentage but it's amazing that it can run all of the Z9Ds options and such high leveled without really skipping a beat. I think it will do a phenomenal job at pushing future OLED panels and hopefully they will keep refining it to where it becomes a seamless viewing experience.

perfect write up especially from someone who talks out of experience its refreshing. btw wha tmodel would you recommend for more affordable under 2k dollars or around 2k? i was thinking 860d or the 890e series? A lot of people dont understand how genius the marketing team is for LG and samsung. OLED is not superior it's superior at perfect blacks because it can turn them off but its a very clever move from them. The fact is that being too dark is bad because there is no such thing as perfect black in reality What you often get is a very dark scene with absolutely no shadow detail. and this is where the 4k hdr capabilites of sony TV shine is that it can rener shadow detail better. The perfect black is a very clever but often terrible gimmick. Even the x1 oled from sony looks shit cuz its simply way too fucking dark nothing like that exists in life except for the darkness of outer space. FALD LCD is the absolute top of the line from LCD technology it has come a long way along with Sony fine tuning to get the best. I feel like microled will kill oleds to be honest and render them uselessl. I feel like sony is waiting for microled and skipping on making their own OLED panels. I think the zd9 is using sharp panels which means sharp is a very impressive tv company themselfs?

kwazykilla87, I agree, the Z9D is a phenomenal television. I originally purchased the A1E because it was touted to produce one of the best experiences available at home. Despite having it in a relatively dark room and with the brightness maxed, the picture was still too dark. I ended up returning it for the Z9D; after nearly a year of ownership, I have not once regretted my decision. If I had to provide one complaint, it would be that the screen produces a lot of heat. You're able to feel it (the heat) radiating when standing close by, but it's understandable since it has more than 600 LED lights.

Systolic120mmHg oh fuck off! Your reason is fucking ridiculous! OLED is fine as wine right now! Only LG that has GUTS and FAITH to move on with OLED! And it pays off

JACK DOLAH Ridiculous? Not really. OLED's have a lower lifespan. Each organic OLED degrade at different rates; with blue degrading twice as fast thus cause a shift in color reproduction. It is also susceptible to water, thus highly humid areas cause damage to the display. Banding can also be an issue. It cannot compete with an LCD's total luminance (nits). I don't get why you have to swear at me. Also, you don't make sense, considering Sony and Panasonic are releasing OLED tv's too, not just LG. Grow up.

Not that theirs miss information out there , just info not expanded upon.. Don't get me wrong OLED is a great tech. I don't believe it's the future of Tv maybe I'm wrong. The thing that people always say is that OLED can hit perfect blacks. Yes that is true.. but when blacks wash out and or lose detail in a scene that becomes a non factor, and the LG motion issue .. Ill take/ took the Z9D ANY Day. The thing is they don't mention who this TV is for.. OLED is good not great over the Z9D only in dark areas and that can be submissive on what content your viewing. Now if you watch a lot of content in a room with light don't even waste your time on OLED IN DAY TIME Z9D IS head over shoulders better. Again it just depends on what you use your tv for.

See the best black levels they have seen because of zones even tho the contrast with local dimming on is 7900:1eaning yes it gets deep blacks but it's also because of the tech you can get deep blacks even without being to high but the q90r has 11000:1 in contrast with local dimming on because of the zones and people want to think blacks wont be deep when they really really are and they loom even deeper because of the engineering that went into the filters on the TV so even if native contrast isnt as high the extra filters make up for it and the processor like it's seriously deep deep blacks they look as deep as the q9fn it matters what you see it's what you see not what you read and I'm telling you the new processing is fucking amazing some of the best I've seen and it's the best Samsung has ever put out and as you see every single review says the same thing besides the quantom apotheosis guy but hes the same one that said it seeks like materials are cheaper yet saya he doesnt want to return it because it's to heavy to move ummm that means its probably real quality and it is guys the back is plastic just like the q9fn exactly the same even the ridges the lines are the same on the back and the bezel is all metal and the stand is all metal the stand is heavier then the q9fn stand it's a very good TV made very well anybody telling you it's not the same build quality as the q8fn are just speaking out there ass because the q90r weighs more then the q9fn and it's made with the exact the exact same material same plastic on the back to a t the bezels are metal like the q9fn and the stand is also like the q9fn again thot he q90r has heavier parts to it same amount of zones also with a better algarithm and it weighs more yet isnt built as good come in guys use your head lol everyone that's owned them have lived them and I mean everyone the only ones talking crap are the ones with last years models and haven't even seen the new one sin person they haven't had a hands one experience with it if they did there minds would change quickly if you walk by samsungs 8k TV and say the picture is so crisp well it's the same for the q80r and the q90r same processor just in 4k and it improves clarity sharpness it improves noise reduction motion response time it's an amazing TV and your eyes wont see a difference in the blacks levels they are very very deep to the point where when your in a dark room the TV disappears this is why reviewers are actually saying the blacks look deeper onto he q80r and q90r and that's where the engineering and tech comes into play the contrast is slightly less hut you cannot see that and now you get viewing angles and everything else that's better like image processing meaning the image does look better and is smoother it reminds you exactly of an oled the way it displays colors and everything of course more saturated but it had that glow like oled even when the TV is in a black scene now the whites glow even when it dims they still glow unlike the 2018 models where the whites were more flat when in dark scenes so now flames are even more intense reds oranges greens are much more punchy but now also not so over saturated and without that damn red hue over all skin it's a great TV with a great image

Oled still sucks with uniformity. Grey uniformity is nasty. Near black handing is ugly. Colours are not quite right even after a calibration. Best tv will be a true rgb oled. Not this filtered white oled by LG.

I agree with you. I have a Oled B6 and its top notch quality on things like 4k streams and blu ray/HDR but the processing not so much, Thats where the sony beats it. But a Sony Oled is going to cost double than what a 2017 oled is going to go for thats the bummer.

wrong ! Oled still wont hit 1000 nits. 800 nits is confirmed outside dynamic mode so oled will still clip HDR content with hdr 10. Such a pity.

what people have to realize, is that the oled picture is untouchable. mainly because EACH PIXEL DISPLAYS ITS OWN PICTURE, each pixel is remastering content, there is NO LED tv that can do what the oled can, people mentiom the z9d. z9d great tv, but that is 512 dimming zones vs the oleds infamous 8.3 million. Either you guys cant count, or are sony bandwagon riders, you heard the guy in the video, light bleed and blooming, slower lag response time, and slower range of motion, no dolby vision, the tv can just get really bright!!! lol brightness never does or never will enhance picture quality, dont believe me? try adjusting your brightness on yiur tv, and see where it gets you lol, oled is better, cheaper, last longer, and does way more besides 3d, save your money, buy the 900f which out performs z9d anyway lol

The other day I was looking at an B6 OLED 65" and I found out that 2016 LG OLED TVs have two features to prevent image retention and burn-in. Under Picture/OLED Panel Settings/ there is an option called Clear Panel Noise that shuts down the TV and reboots the TV if there is a static image on the screen for four hours. The other option is called Screen Shift that shifts the pixels to the left.
