Best story telling in a music video ♥️ Another classic I loved this I think the cop did it and tried to frame Richard This song was haunting to me and still is
@RedDawnRocker
@RedDawnRocker 3 жыл бұрын
I love how he leaves us with not just one or two possibilities but a bunch of them. Did the sheriff (Robert Conrad) do it to frame him? Was his deputy the young guy who was fooling around with/taking advantage of his GF? Did he kill her? Was it someone else in town she was fooling around with/being taken advantage by who killed her for unrelated reasons? Did the sheriff actually frame him or did he actually believe he did it? Then there are the other two possibilities ... was she a victim of an accident or suicide or more importantly ... did Richard's character actually do it himself? I absolutely love when a video gives you options to think on. For me, I thought it was most likely the deputy since he saw a younger guy in the car with her and he was the one to bust into his place stuffing a gun right in his face. He'd also be close enough/trustworthy enough to the sheriff to keep the fires burning. This video was just pure genius.

His house burned down when he was six, and everyone thought he set the fire. That is why they thought there was something wrong with him, and that is why everyone told Mary she should be afraid of him. It is also why they set his trailer on fire after she died.

It's also implied she was forced to cheat on him, probably by the cop. How convenient for him to show up when he did. Almost like it was a trap he set.

I love your reactions! So genuine, and you have so much ntelligence and empathy! This song is haunting and so beautiful. I think he set his house on fire out of anger after his dad left. I don't think he killed his mom cuz he said he and her moved to Hazard at the age of 7. I personally always thought the cop killed her. He was obviously obsessed with her. He then framed the boy that loved her. I think he ran away at the end. Just so beautifully sad disturbing, but man the music is mesmerizing and so is his voice. Great story too. Hopefully nobody gets murdered like that.

Outcast kid gets accused of a crime he didn't commit. The court of public opinion among residents of the small rural community deem him to be quilty. They burn down his trailer and symbolically his childhood memories burn as he seeks to leave that place forever. The video implies some kind of cover up has occurred and the finger of blame gets pointed in the wrong direction.

If you notice the cop was taking photos of him & Mary in the beginning. Then when the cops pull up & he runs he loses his scarf in the tree... and the cops spotlight hits it... So I think the cop did it & used him as a scapegoat because of the "rumors" everyone believed in town.

They were just platonic friends, but the Sheriff was having an affair with her, so he framed him for the murder. Also, the impression I got was that the protagonist's father caught his wife with another man after coming back from a war and moved out with another woman for revenge, and then someone burned down the mother's house, so she moved to Hazard. Odd that you never see his parents again.

Could also be he got the wrong idea about their relationship. One sided romance type of thing. He thought they were a couple, she never once gave him that idea. But she definitely felt guilty. And I hihgly doubt he killed her. Seems more likely the Sheriff did it. He seems to be stalking Mary throughout the video.

I don't know who you are, but you said it:"WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?" The whole them of this video is:" As a little boy, he saw and new what happened. What is easier for the accuser to do...falsely accuse someone else! " He didn't have anyone to tell, because they were cops, so! That kinda limits your options all together. It's a beautifully written story that can only be told in a song. Because it's so true...no one would believe you. P.S. I love your reaction, and your smile lol. Have a great.

Later on, I heard about some of his work with other artists as a writer and/or producer, and he impressed me again, especially with the song he wrote for Luther Vandross, Dance With My Father.

You were right, he burned his house down when he was a kid and that's why they're always watching him! He finally finds someone who loves him for himself and she ends up dead! They let him go but burn his trailer to the ground to force him out of town! Now; did she kill herself because she found his scarf and knew he'd seen her in the car with the other guy or did the other guy kill her? This has haunted me for almost 30 years!

I heard this song ages ago, finally saw the video a while back. Honestly, I wish that it had played out on video the way it always sounded to me like it did on radio: that she befriended him (a drifter/outcast), then just _went missing_ after being seen with him at the river, and was never found. And, that everyone suspected him -- as the drifter/outcast -- of some crime you never actually _see_ or suspect anyone else of committing.

I was 17 when this song came out. I had left school and was about to start University. That summer my older sister was diagnosed with cancer. I remember that it was a very hot summer, and I used to walk down to the bridge over the River Devon, and watch it flow, with this playing on my personal stereo. My sister survived thank goodness. She can't listen to this song because I played it so often that summer. The video and song are very ambiguous. He may have been guilty, or perhaps he was framed. Was the sheriff trying to protect her or stalking her?

In the song, there's no resolution. But in the music video, whether true to the song or not, the cop clearly killed her. He was taking photos while Richard was with Mary. He was pulling up beside her and you saw her face change and she started to run. I've always thought the cop did it, that's why the Sheriff was pressing him so hard, to get a confession because he knew there was 0 evidence but he wanted to force a confession.
