I deeply appreciate that all of the main characters are a huge variety of ethnicities and backgrounds, the female lead is not only highly educated but a princess who also happens to be leader of the guard, and the male lead is very normal (more brains than the constant brawn and athleticism that is mostly seen in adventure films).

@@SonicaKuroiTenshi yes but that’s only the beginning. Apparently Atlantis reached its height more that 90,000 years ago far older than the type of French Milo or Mole was speaking. Romance languages like French and Latin are relatively new in comparison to Atlantean. If I’m reading this correctly the French shepherd who wrote the book found it only 1000 years before Milo’s expedition. He brought a modern version of French which he was able to teach them because of that Tower of Babel, root dialect effect.

7:03 It’s even more horrifying when you consider the scale being displayed here. The Ulysses Submarine was 377 feet (115 meters) long, and the Leviathan just grabbed it with its smaller pair of pincers. That beastie has to be somewhere over a mile in length! To top it all off, it has lasers, tentacles to deal with smaller precision strikes, and as clearly seen in the opening, these bastards are capable of high speed flight. So it's technically Canon that she survived that fall and volcano explosion. How? I don't know, but it would have been cool since she was a cool villain. The "Sequel" this film got was actually a pilot for a canceled TV Show "Team Atlantis" and was 3 episodes edited together. It would have been amazing to see a Theatrical Sequel, a TV Show, and yes, they planned rides at both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. Why can't we live in a world where those are reality?

to be fair, i think they started off wanting to show Atlantis more in-depth before it cut to the "present" and Milo, but figured that would kinda ruin the spectacle of actually finding it. They also had an alternate intro where Icelandic vikings trying to find Atlantis get heckin' nuked by the Leviathan, leaving the Journal, but they decided to instead show how Atlantis sank into the ocean so that you get a taste of the city and culture before the movie _i think_ Also that montage of them going through like the centipede and the cold and the caves, that was supposed to be wayyyyy longer.

Reasons why this movie is amazing on top of the regular reasons (tight script, great banter, beautiful animation, etc.): - Milo as a nerdy "science hero", a soft nerdy man who's an idealist and motivated by a pure pursuit of knowledge, and his physical weakness isn't shown as something shameful or unmanly or something he needs to overcome by the end. - Even though he's shown as idealistic, we're reminded that scientific advancement doesn't exist in a vacuum and in his work, Milo is naively reaping the fruits of suffering and conquest. As Rourke points out, the Altanteans' treasure would be far from the first thing to make it into museums against the will of the original owners. - Rather than black and white characterisation, the cast exists on a spectrum from "good person who cares about other people" (Milo, Dr. Sweet) to "your average person who knows what's right but may struggle with doing it" (Audrey and the others), to "knows what's right but will do the wrong thing for other reasons like loyalty or self-interest" (Helga, with her little line "This changes everything" before Rourke shoots that down), to "gives zero shits about doing the wrong thing and will not feel bad about it" (Rourke) - Disney needs to revive the tradition of "conquest-hungry immoral military man as the ultimate bad guy" (Altantis, Tarzan), if they're not too busy sucking up to the Pentagon these days when writing the MCU.

Cookie's line near the end saying that he wasn't so good at “speechifying” was the only dialogue line of his that was done by someone other than Jim Varney, who had died of lung cancer aged just 50 before the film was completed. Presumably that line was added much later in the production, when Jim was either too ill to record the line himself, or was no longer with us by the time the decision was made to add it. _Atlantis: The Lost Empire_ is dedicated to his memory and Cookie was his last role.

Jim Varney passed away on February 12, 2000, at age 50 due to lung cancer from smoking, before the production ended, and the film was dedicated to his memory. Producer Don Hahn was saddened that Varney never saw the finished film, but mentioned that he was shown clips of his character's performance during his site sessions and said, "He loved it." Shawn Keller, supervising animator for Cookie, stated, "It was kind of a sad fact that he knew that he was not going to be able to see this film before he passed away. He did a bang-up job doing the voice work, knowing the fact that he was never gonna see his last performance.

I loved this movie when I was a kid! Even today, this must be one of the best Disney movies. The diversity of the characters, the girl power, the interesting culture of the Atlantians, the critique on western countries stealing resources from other countries just for their own profit and thereby destroying said countries ruthlessly.. Ugh, this film is just perfect. Edit: of course there are some „problematic“ aspects such as the white savior trope (milo is the only one who can read their language, teaches them to reenact wit their culture) but for an animated movie back then, this movie was still pretty good.
@a_sterling4514
@a_sterling4514 3 жыл бұрын
I LOVE this movie, and I could go on and on about it. As for the problematic aspects, because I really want to talk about this, the worst thing is indeed that Milo is the main character that can speak the language. However, this is complicated because the premise is to emphasis the importance of knowing your heritage and culture. The King of Atlantis is shown to be in the wrong here because he believed that suppressing knowledge of their culture would "preserve" their way of life but what Kida identifies as the problem with this is that the loss of knowledge leads to the death of their culture. This was a very intentional suppression though, perpetrated, interestingly, by a member of that culture. It was only when an outsider came (again, the most problematic part) that Kida was able to obtain the tools she needed to reunite her people with her culture (one could look at this as commentary on the value of both internal and external perspectives on a culture, saying that both perspectives are necessary, in Anthropology this would be to say that we need the voices of both outsiders and insiders of a culture to better understand that culture). There are so many more interesting themes and tropes happening here. I could go on. (I will try not to.) But obviously the capitalism commentary, Roark has some of the best lines noting that nearly everything in museums have been stolen from other cultures, expressing the importance of repatriation, Milo has an interesting toxic masculinity arch which is resolved by the end (he attempts but often fails to participate in toxic masculinity when he 'mansplains' to Audrey and Kida, but at the end when he explains how the flying fish work he says "Kida showed me" not "I figured it out, or showed her" showing that he learned to humble himself and understand who has ownership of certain knowledge and discovery.

@@a_sterling4514 you lost all credibility to me the moment you used a word made by third wave feminist extremists to berate and degrade men. milo wasn't "mansplaining" he was feeling cocky because he managed to get one up on the top of the craft. if you managed to get explain something the top expert of that field couldn't you would feel extremely cocky as well. using that fabricated word "mansplaining" and a couple other words, out you as an extremist using academics as a cloak to hide beneath. the person above also is the same. the "white savior" is utter nonsense and racist. it basically is saying that milo being "white" is a negative and the only way to subvert this "white savior" "trope" is to have milo be black or any other ethnic group. this is racist against "white people" no where in the movie is it expressed that milo is better than others simply because of his ethnicity. it doesn't glorify his ethnicity either. nor does it paint other people of other ethnicities as inferior. they are all there because they are the best at what they do.
