The song Crying At The Discotheque would usually want a video recorded in - you guessed it - a disco or club, but I have been thinking so much recently about all my musician and crew friends who can't work at the moment, I thought a video where I film in as many empty London venues as possible would highlight all that's on hold at the moment.
I worked again with my favourite team for my videos, Sophie Muller, Robbie Ryan and Lisa Laudat, and we did all 7 venues in one day. It was strangely moving performing in those places to no crowd when I'd sang in them previously so full of life. I hope it brings home the gap in our culture at the moment. It's a scary time for so many people in my industry - please do head to www.wemakeevents.com/ to find out how you can support the events industry right now.
Heartfelt thanks to the venues that welcomed us in to film: St Moritz, Bush Hall, Omeara, Clapham Grand, Heaven, Apollo Theatre, The O2 Arena.
Listen to "Murder On The Dancefloor" (as featured in the movie 'Saltburn'): sophieellisbextor.lnk.to/MOTDFID

This video is deeper than it seems. Sophie, the undisputed queen of dance, sings and dances with the same style, joy and glamor as always, but this time there is no audience; she sings to empty chairs, to auditoriums without people. These are times of uncertainty. Right now Europe is swelling the list of infected again. There is no certainty of the future. I interpret this video as a cry of hope and optimism from the dance queen to the world: even if there may be no one in the auditorium, even if there are no shouts in the stadium, even if there are no people in the disco, I will sing and follow him doing even the last person standing on the planet.

The concept of the video perfectly reflects what happened this year. It is incredible but also shocking the contrast between the rhythm of the song, the lights, the colors, the brightness, etc., with the images of theaters and stadiums absolutely emptys... she singing and dancingin absolute solitude. The 3:00 min. made my hair stand on end. We have to make it a hit because despite it's clearly a beautiful song it's one of the few (if not the only one) that reflected so clear what this year was for humanity. For those who don't know, the original version of this was created by Swedish band Alcazar. I gotta say, though, that Sophie's vocal performance & richness brought new life into this"blast from the past". Plus, updated instrument recordings, modern mixing and mastering & FX makes this a GOLDEN record. I just fucking love it. You go, girl!

@@tonymew2372 Although that's true, I wouldn't say it's "the original" because yes, the instrumental is obviously HEAVILY sampled from there, BUT the vocal melodies & lyrics are totally different (and way better in my humble opinion), making it a different tune.

@@tonymew2372 As a music producer and prolly being totally biased cauze I am 28yrs old, the vocal line of the Sheila B tune doesn't feel as catchy or uh, fresh as the Alcazar one. That's why I absolutely LOVE sampling as a tool for evolving an idea through time!

@@tonymew2372 I heard the 'he's a spacer' song you mentioned by Sheila B Devotion playing in the in store radio in the branch of River Island in St. Stephen's shopping centre in Kingston Upon Hull once and I realized how much it sounded like the Alcazar song 'crying at the discotheque' which Sophie is singing here from her 'song from the kitchen disco' album. I realized Alcazar sampled 'he's a spacer'. In fact Australian singer Kylie Minogue also sampled 'he's a spacer' on a song called 'on the up' which she recorded for her album 'Body Language' released in 2003 but unfortunately the song was not used on that album and was leaked onto KZfaq! You should check it out Tony Mew !
