In the US there are what's called "open container laws," in that depending on the state, you're legally not allowed to drink in public and/or not allowed to be seen carrying an alcoholic beverage. That's why you'll see American "delinquents" carry those brown bags after going to a liquor store...

I can't believe we live in such a dystopian society that you have to fill out a form, pay a small fee, and get a permit from the (city) GOVERNMENT before you can drag a keg into a public park and get completely sloppy with your friends 😔 and then the police harass you for monopolizing the playground toys, it's totally unreal.

I think some of the reason why this has been blown out of proportion by westerners is that in other countries, police can use their 'discretion' to arrest or detain for many reasons. Swearing in public, disorderly conduct, being told to move on etc. If a police officer decides they dont like you or what you're doing, they can use one of these catch-all laws as a threat against you. I'm not excusing people for making up BS, perhaps this explains why people are over-extrapolating an issue that doesn't exist in the way they say it does.

I actually have a little story about when I was studying Japanese in Shibuya: So this takes place in late 2022, I was 18 at the time, and I remember receiving an email. Basically, it was from the language school stating that apparently the cops arrested some people from the school for underage drinking. So basically that email was sent out to everyone under the Drinking/Tobacco age (20, for those that don’t know). I still have the email somewhere. Since the video was on the topic of drinking in Japan, I thought my story would be of interest. In 13 days, I will be 20, so I’ll be the drinking age in Japan! Unfortunately I can’t go back to Japan until next year

Also, getting arrested in the US can seriously affect your whole life. Even if you're not found guilty. You can lose your job, lose time, everything. For not very much. If you're found guilty of something they don't like, you may not be able to get a job. Or be stuck with menial labor with revolving door policies. Basically, an arrest can destroy your life, and the most of the 'crimes' aren't even crimes anywhere else in the world. But, if you go to prison, you cannot expect to be able to go back to your old job when you get out. You're mostly doomed.

Makes me think of the time I was smoking outside a club in Shibuya (there is pretty much a smoking ban on the streets) and what I think was a JP (Japanese Police) officer politely taking the cig out of my fingers and telling me I was done. (in the most stereotypical polite way possible). I'm not going to argue with a guy that can question me in the police station for practicality a month.

Imagine people learning about the USA having "dry counties" where all alcohol sells are banned and you have to drive to a diffrent country to buy alcohol. I grew up between two cities / counties. One sells alcohol like normal and the other only allows resturants/ bars to serve alcohol but not sell it as a distributor. The town that sells it has one small old timer bar, the one that doesn't has like 5 bars and a few lodges (like a southern country club usually with some religious ties). I politely cut out my rant about how creepy I find their lodges. Probably because I liked the movie "The Conspiracy" and I've heard unsettling boast about lots of farmland and a God shovel 😂

Those “open container laws” in the US have actually only been around for the last fifty years (or, in lots of cases, even less). From _HuffPost’s_ “The Secret History Of The War On Public Drinking” (2013): “Between 1975 and 1990, in the wake of the decriminalization of public drunkenness and vagrancy, cities and states gradually imposed bans on drinking in public. … By 1995, the bulk of the cities in the U.S. had passed bans on public drinking. Since then, these laws have even started to proliferate abroad, especially in the U.K. and Australia. Dublin, Ireland, outlawed public drinking in 2008.”

Yeah in the US it's even worse in a lot of places, there are "public intoxication laws" alongside public drinking laws. Simply being drunk in public is illegal with those laws, so if you want to do the right thing and walk home when you can't drive too bad that's a crime. Thankfully my state has banned public intoxication laws, but public drinking laws are still allowed unfortunately.

Is it still frowned upon in Japan if you act drunk (regardless of how much you drank) and are rowdy? I don't know about Japan, but in many countries you can easily be arrested for being intoxicated in public or causing a disturbance like yelling. Why would you show your ID and give your name and address to the police if you're not arrested? Both you and the police are wrong for engaging in this activity.
@IcyTorment
@IcyTorment 21 күн бұрын
Well, that's how it works in most countries. In the U.S., most states have laws requiring that you tell the police who you are if they have some reason to ask. In most of Europe, it's technically illegal to leave the house without valid ID or to refuse to show it to police. So it's not that weird that Japan requires people to show ID on demand.
@Ultimabendessen
@Ultimabendessen 21 күн бұрын
@@IcyTorment I'm sorry to hear that. That's a huge violation of your rights as a citizen. In Canada, we have the right to locomotion (to move freely as long as not trespassing, etc.). For example, someone can't force you to move your hands around in a certain way to retrieve your ID in your pocket. It is your own body and you can move it freely in a free country, as long as you aren't hurting anyone. You also have the right to remain silent, whether being arrested or not. So if a bum or a police tries questioning you, you don't have to say a single word if you don't want to. In Canada, these are called Charter rights. In many other countries, they are called constitutional rights, but many people don't care about their rights, so they aren't followed. You should stand up for your basic rights as a human being. Don't give in to tyranny.

@@Ultimabendessen UN rights were written by humans like any other rights. Checking an ID is an absolutely normal thing in most of the countries. I would prefer if police in DC and MD actually started checking something in their life. The crime rate is ridiculous, police doesn’t do shit, and people can’t even fight it by themselves because criminals will sue them lol. Ironically, it is actually more dangerous here than in some countries of Eastern Europe, where no one gives a shit about most of the laws and rights.
