I've been buying and selling for 30 years and bought storage auctions for about 20 years back in the good old days before storage wars. And yes, you will have good days, bad days and sometimes good years and unfortunately bad years overall. But if you love what you're doing and still surviving then never quit. I still have family tell me to go find a real job, lol What does that really mean, and most of them hate their real jobs. My first big buy was a storage unit that I got for 500 dollars and at that time I had exactly 500 dollars and if the other guy would have said 501 then he would have won, and 500 dollars back then was like 2,000 at least and today that unit would probably sell for about 8,000 or more. and the unit was a 10X30 and I had just gone in business with my 3 brothers and mostly just buying furniture well this unit was filled with records and record players it had belonged to a DJ. My heart was beating and I'm like what did I just do because I knew nothing about records at the time. I thought there may had been about 4,000 records, but when we got into the unit and did a guesstimate there were probably closer to 30,000 records and even selling them at a dollar each and all the equipment, we sold over 30,000 dollars worth in about 6 months. So, you just never know and don't ever quit.

You can't just rely on eBay anymore for lots of sales. You have to multi-invest. Get rid of all your stale listings that have been sitting for so long and only buy stuff that sale within a week. Higher priced more valuable. That's what I'm doing. Storage auctions flea market sales doordash and Uber eats create a system and balance yourself out and make sure you don't rush. Money will flow better and smoother which will take away the need to rush. Patience is key and think on a great business strategy and keep at it.

Chasing that eBay High! When i have a few bad eBay days, I push more items to a local auction house that I routinely use, Rather then cross posting, I send items/lots to auction. It gives me another income stream and even though the ROI tends to be lower, taking a truckload of lots clears shelf space, is faster then listing and gives me almost instant gratification, unlike long-tailed items on eBay, 😉

When I take an group of auction lots in, I usually give the staff a list of Line Items, on a page to describe each lot. Pretty much like writing a title for an eBay listing. Most auction houses have some sort of "contract" that they want you to list the lots on, but in lieu of that they will just take my typed list and staple it to the contact. I've been doing it that way over 20 years and find that if the auction staffer is young or inexperienced, they will simply repeat what I have typed, for a description, into their catalog. A lot description might look something like this: Assorted Vintage Wrenches and Hand Tools (1 Box = 1 Lot). That way they know what the volume of the lot might be too.

As you work with the same Auction House over and over, I find they will offer the lots the way you prep them, but I always tell the owner of the auction house that if he needs to merge a couple lots or split out items like your LSU cards, he is free to do so. In most cases I have more time and experience working for (and making up) auction lots then the staff does. Sometimes how the lots are prepped and handled depends on how the Auction House sells. If it's a traditional Brick and Mortar live auction, they may want more flexibility to modify your list on the fly. If the catalog is for on-line selling, many auction houses like it when you provide each lot in a box (or 2) and make up the description for them, because it is faster for them to process. They don't have to make decisions, just photograph and type. How you make up the lots has as much to do with the way many auction houses charge minimum per lot fees. If you have to pay them a minimum of say: $5 per lot, then something like the LSU cards may net you more sold in one group. Some auction houses will give you a target per lot, depending on where they are in the food chain. Just like having an idea of what you want minimum for an eBay listing, they may not want to deal with lots that will only bring $5 or $10. You should also have a per lot minimum target. If you don't think a game or action figure will hit your minimum, put a few items together to make a better lot. Three $5 figures or a large box with 6 assorted vintage board games, rather then single items, might do that. The auctioneer will usually appreciate the effort you put into making up lots he can flip. Some houses will charge you the minimum fee even on lots that don't sell, so sending them will just waste everyones time. If you have an unlikely item, that you want to dump anyway, then an old trick is to send it with a related item that will be popular. For example, a couple new low dollar Barbies, with a 1960s doll and some clothes would make a good lot. If they charge you per lot sold, you can end up in a situation where the house wins and gets more per lot then you do and your net result is actually lower. Learning about the minimum per lot fees helps you make up lots in a way that is likely to make you more money, net. I use flat boxes, like Safeway"s fruit boxes and size the lots to cover the fees and make me some dosh too. If you explain to the auctioneer that you have been selling on-line for years and have experience at pricing, he may let you make up your own lots. Doing that is faster for the auction house to process lots, so they win too. 😉

@@shedflipsThese days I source primarily from buying bulk mixed lots from auctions and estates, so always seem to have items in each group that I have no intention of putting up on eBay. That is were I get the primary fodder for making up auction lots. Additionally, I'll send items that are taken down from eBay because they haven't sold and I am tired of seeing them sit on my shelves. Sending lots to auction is just another way to manage stock. The auction house I'm currently using is a bit over an hour away and near our state capital (bigger audience then were we live) away and sells on line weekly, so I can take about as much as I can lot up. To make it worth the time and fuel I take about a pick-up truck of boxed lots at a time.

On those school lunch trays, you should also list them geared to people who do not like their food to touch when they eat. The technical term for the fear of different foods touching each other is brumotactillophobia, which can also be called food separatism. It's a mild form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I actually have two friends who have this issue and they use school lunch trays to eat their meals. Just a thought! New to your channel!

Hey! I have been watching you guys for years now on my personal channel and am wondering how the momentum board is thought out? I tried to find a video on this in the how to section but didn’t see anything on this. I’m wondering how the listing value each day may relate to actual sales. 🙂 Thank you for all the information you guys give.

Is your desire to watch the auction the equivalent of someone playing the pokies waiting for a win?? Any profit you make would be more than absorbed by the two of you spending 5 hrs there. That’s 10 working hours taken from your business, when the auction will still go on without you. That’s just how I’m looking at it.
